The best part about this trip was the service from (most of) the staff. Everyone there seemed to genuinely enjoy their jobs and go out of their way to make sure you were having a nice time. While there are a few areas for improvement, the resort is overall quite nice. A friend that I was with got hit on quite aggressively by one of the activity people which was completely inappropriate, but other than that, we enjoyed everyone we met there.
Rooms:
Our room was nicely furnished. We had an "ocean view" suite which looked directly into the children's pool area. Since we didn't spend too much time in the room, no one seemed to care. We hoped to use the sofa sleeper since we had three friends in a 2-bed room, but that was impossible since the sofa bed was dirty and broken.
Common areas/grounds:
Generally very nice grounds and common space. There are beautiful walkways through tropical gardens on each side of the hotel. The lobby is showing its age (worn furniture, some tattered fabrics, etc) and could use some freshening up, but it is very open and airy, which is wonderful. The gift shop is horrifically overpriced but does have a nice selection of items. Watch out for slippery floors/walkways and huge puddles of standing water when it rains.
Food/drink:
The food options for dinner were very good. The best restaurant we tried was Blue Moon and the least impressive was the hibachi. Breakfast and lunch options are pretty well limited to buffet. While the food selection is nice and there are many options, it does get a bit tedious day after day after day to eat in the same place with the same stuff (we even were sat at the same table twice in one day, which made the whole experience seem oddly institutional). Drinks lack consistency -- sometimes they are great and sometimes not, but it pretty much balances out at the end of the day. We did have trouble finding good coffee that didn't taste watered down (and blended coffee drinks in the shop are basically coffee flavored sugar water). All inclusive wine is terrible (your options are "red" or "white", both of which are on tap). Expect to pay about $40 for a decent bottle with your dinner, which is reasonable, in my opinion.
Pools:
I'm not huge on a "party pool" atmosphere, and I think there is a nice balance between having activities available and having quiet areas in the pool. I was able to read and relax and even the non-main pools had great poolside drink service.
Beach:
This was the most disappointing thing. From reading other tripadvisor reviews, I could tell that the beach would be hit or miss. The first day we were there didn't seem too bad, but upon further examination, it was pretty gross. This isn't the resort's fault, but if you are a big beach person (I am) than you won't like this one. The sand is OK right near the resort, but the water was just too gross to even attempt to go in the ocean. We did walk to town via the beach, but it was so icky we ended up taking a cab back to the hotel ($20 USD) rather than attempt to walk back through the muck, seaweed and dead fish. If you have kids, I would not recommend walking to the town, just spend the money for a cab if you really want to go. (Really, though, almost all the knickknacks you can buy in Puerto Morelos are available in the resort gift shop at slightly higher prices, but...when you factor in a $40 cab ride for a 4 mile round-trip journey, it's probably a wash anyway).
Spa:
There was hardly anyone using the spa, and it was clear to see why. We had nail services and they were literally the worst/most expensive nail treatments I've ever had. I didn't have high expectations, but I would not recommend using the spa. Perhaps their massages, facials, etc are better, but the salon is not good. Staff is friendly though!
I enjoyed this trip and was very happy we chose this resort. Have reasonable expectations and you will have a great time.
