As I start my review of Ocean Coral & Turquesa, this is not my first detailed review I have written, nor was this our first all-inclusive. This is actually our 17th trip to Mexico in the last 15 years. Most have been via Apple Vacations to 5 golden or 6 golden apple resorts.
This review is from our view points, take it as it is, some may agree or disagree with us. I will make comparison reference to Palace Resorts and Now Jade as these were recently traveled and carry a full 6 golden apple rating! This review is kind of long, but touched on a few things, that we were never able to find info regarding while doing reading of reviews before our trip.
Road seems to be a big concern for people. It was being worked on, it is 2Km long, took about 12-15 mins to travel down from highway to resort. I did not really find it of much concern—its Mexico—we have potholes that big here in Michigan after a long winter!!!
We stayed from 1/30/14 to 2/10/14. We traveled with 9 people (6 adults and 3 kids-ages 7,8,12). This resort is a great value for what we paid. Traveling from Detroit to Cancun via Apple Vacations.
I did rate this as 4, but there is not an option for 4.5! There were just a few small things that could be improved upon!
We were in Building 1 on the 2nd floor. Our friends paid $10 a day more to upgrade to the 3rd floor. Was it worth it? To them yes! This was not upgrade to Privileged just to higher level floor. We all opted out of upgrading to Privileged as not that much more that would have benefited us.
ROOMS:
Moisture was a concern in our room and was very musty smelling. Fortunately, our room did have a dehumidifier in it and helped greatly! We needed to empty it approx 3 times a day! Personally, we did not like the fact that the A/C and fan shut off after approx 30 mins of no motion. It would be nice if this motion sensor feature could be overridden, so that the air and fan would stay on the entire time. This would help with the moisture problem, as well!! Our friends that upgraded to the 3rd floor did not have as much moisture problem and were never granted the dehumidifier that was requested. Another thing we found slightly annoying is not having a clock in the room. The resort description does list clock with ipod hookup. We kept our phones plugged in, when in room. I do travel with an outlet adapter/night light and we were glad we to have it, as very limited outlets and needed both chargers to stay plugged in. The outlets in the bathroom do shut off when the air goes off. Water and pop were replenish daily. I did have to call a couple times to get more bottle water. Our maid, Margarite (sp) did do a great thorough job and on days we opted to not have cleaned changed out our towels!!
BEACH/POOL:
Yes there is seaweed on the beach. It is the ocean! The resort does attempt to clean it up. They run a tractor up and down just about hourly. Other resorts next door—NOW & Excellence do nothing and just let the seaweed pile up! Pools are very well maintained. Quite pool, activity pool, swim-up bar pool and kids pool. Loungers get taken at beach very quick!
TOWELS:
Now honestly who wants to bring these worn out things home? With suitcase weight restrictions these days who can afford the extra weight!! I can not stand the towel cards. Resorts should have beach towels available all the time for pool/beach use. At this resort, if you bring your wet towels back after 3pm, they only give cards out. Ridiculous, it is a fight to get clean towels between 3pm-6pm. Well sorry, but the pools are open till 8pm and the kids typically swam until at least 6pm. Just let people get the towels as wanted, that is what Palaces Resorts and Now Jade allow! The towel game is in full effect here!! We had to have our (wet) towels out on our chairs by 7am. We did want to sit in a specific area. Loungers could be found thru out if open to sitting in any open spot. The beach has limit loungers, and these are taken quickly in the morning!
PHOTOGRAPHER:
The resort has a few photographers that take family photos thru out the day. With animals and posed pics with kids and families. And these pics are great! **Here is the catch….we went to purchase pics at the end of our stay. No packages offers, no group discounts, no negotiating. $20 a pic! Wow!! With our group we had over 200 pics taken for our stay. We were looking to have all of them just put on a disc. (we had this done at the Palace Resorts last year for $100 for that many pics.) Not gonna happen here!! Instead of making some money by putting pics on a disc, we bought nothing! Which was a bummer since there were some nice pics!! The resort should probably rethink the policies on this and at least make some money! Those discs are all of $1.00!!
WIFI:
This was a big topic of discussion since one of the guys is an IT person!! The wifi worked about half the time! We were hoping for wifi on all the time, so that we would be able to i-message as needed. But instead you always had to log on everytime you wanted to check messages and push email delivery. There was no limit to amount of times logged on. When it did work, it was pretty slow. A couple days it never worked at all! There are a few PC offered in the lobby, if you do not mind sitting there! On the days there was no WIFI, these PC did not work either!
WORK OUT ROOM/SPA:
This room really could use some improving! It has 3 bikes, 3 treadmills, 3 ellipticals and some old worn out weights, in a very tight small room! The picture on website, makes this room appear much larger!! I did attempt the weights a few times. It is extremely hot in the room with no air or fans! This is an area which sets the Palace Resorts a higher rating! A nice running path/trail is located on the outside perimeter of the property. It is 1300m around. We calculated 4 times around to be 3 miles! Spa is small and very worn!
FOOD:
I am not going to go to much into food. Everyone’s taste and expectations are so different!! I will make a few notes here. The Sensai (hibachi) does allow kids. Kids can eat at grills at the first 6pm seating. We did go to the 7:30 seating and the kids ate at their own table, while the adults did sit near them at the hibachi grill. Worked out great, waiters asked us when ordering, the kids thought it was cool to sit by themselves too! Blue Moon is the adults only restaurant. Dress code at these were not strictly enforced! The al a carte restaurants do tend to take 1 ½ hours to complete meals service, which can be a little long with kids. We just kept saying were on vacation! Numerous nightly buffets were set up outside. We did avoid these, since the food can sit for long periods of time, some cheese hardened and bread really hard. Seems the meat is always way overcooked! We did find the pool wait service to be more concerned about picking up cups then actually waiting on guests. Maybe more wait staff and some pool people for pick up. It would have been nice to have an outdoor grill atmosphere for snacks at lunch instead of having to put cover up on to go get lunch. Morning coffee served at lobby bar, self serve or to order cappuccinos. Mikes coffee opens at 9am and was a great hit! Around 9am, a lady walks around pool with a cart of bloody mary’s or mimosa’s! Nice touch! The swim up bar was slightly understaffed in our opinion and could have used more wait staff, as previously mentioned. Alcohol was not watered down—Captain Morgan, Bacardi, Skyy, Absolute & Smirnoff Vodka are the normal, Privledge get other alcohol. Ice was good quality from bags. Blenders are Tropical oasis and make a great drink!! Corona beer was on tap, and pop that was served was Pepsi products on fountain or bottles in the room.
ENTERTAINMENT TEAM:
The entertainment team! “Sexy Chocolate!”, Rodrigo, Oscar! Great job for crazy games!! What an effort put into the evening shows! Long days and Very hard workers!
There is a teen club for those traveling with teenagers. Has pool tables, ping pong with a large patio. Our kids did go get popcorn made for them each afternoon and brought bags back to the pool and passed out! That was quite a hit for the people around us!
The pictures that travelers have posted do a great job of depicting the hotel!
We never got talked to about the timeshare deal, and were not disappointed either!!
We did travel with lots of $1 & $5 bills and tipped regularly. We did not book Privileges and did not really feel that we missed out on anything. I guess if you want to eat right at 6pm then you might want to consider. We typically eat later, so not a big deal for us. So we could have gotten Finlandia Vodka instead of Skyy, that was not worth it to upgrade for us!
As mentioned previously….For the late night party animals –not a lot-- Some Music/Dj out by pool bar, the music stops at 12:30 (not suprised as there are some rooms nearby the pool with disco and ones was ours!! And we could hear the thumping!!)
I did get food poisoning. I believe it was from the cottage cheese. I Vomited violently for an entire afternoon and had belly issues for another day. Thank goodness I travel with Probiotics, and up my dosage really high, and managed to make breakfast the next day! Talking to guests, we did hear of a few other groups that had people get sick! Be cautious what eat, make sure to bring some pepto tabs!!
Even with getting sick, I would recommend this resort. Overall we had a great vacation, enough for all ages to do, if you want to relax, sit at quite pool, if you want activities sit at activity pool!
If anyone has questions regarding this resort.
Please feel free to PM through tripadvisor and I would be happy to answer.
