The hotel chain says it is a gay hotel chain which is also hetero friendly. The website shows off this world of guys everywhere. The reality is quite different. There are lots of girls groups, straight couples, and so forth. Just like a normal hotel then. Which isn't a problem of course, but the only things making this hotel 'gay' are the pictures of hot guys in the reception area, and the pool barmen being cute. Being 'gay friendly' might be an attraction in cities where other hotels might be 'gay unfriendly' but I can't imagine that being the case in Barcelona, so I'm left wondering what the point is. It's a very different picture to the website.
Talking of which, the website also boasted a gym and spa. Neither of which are open. They are included in the directory in the lifts with stickers over them. I asked at reception. The guy explained the website has been updated to refer to the gym at the other (original) Axel hotel. Still not particularly clear from glancing on his screen. Ah well no matter, it's only a fifteen minute walk away. No sir, it's only available for guests of that hotel, you can use it for a €8 charge. I found that disappointing, considering the gym at this hotel isn't ready yet. Quite a lot of staff interactions were quite impersonal in this way. Perfectly polite, but a little impersonal. Some exceptions of course - the pool barmen are lovely and friendly.
It was my birthday during our stay - which hotels tend to know given what they do with passports (as here) - and a little gesture perhaps. Nothing here. Not a big deal at all, but just further shows the kind of impersonal approach.
On check in they had an offer to upgrade to a premium room. We asked what that included and were told it included a balcony. We went for it. There are no balconies (well not in our room). Apparently an indoor square of floor surrounded by tall glass was the balcony area (no outdoor space). So if you get offered a premium room, make sure you're clear on what you get.
For a new build, it's odd that the windows are far from sound proof. That's not to say it's a noisy hotel - far from it; it's in a very quiet area - but the occasional sound of ambulance sirens were certainty louder in our room than my own alarm clock, so gave an occasional interruption to sleep.
The pool is tiny. It looks a lot bigger the way it is shown on the website. It was mainly just girls sitting in it. There are about 15 sun loungers, so they get busy. We never had problems finding a space though.
On our last morning, there was a curious incident of a guy coming into our room unannounced and then saying he was on the wrong floor, apologising and he disappeared at speed. I couldn't work out how the key system had allowed this until I realised that a baffled looking cleaner had let him in. It all seemed very suspicious. So if the cleaners just let people into any room, I'd suggest you make use of the room safe. The receptionist did appear to take this seriously when I mentioned it on check out, to be fair.
But all that being said, I'm not one of those trip advisor crazy people who lets a glass out of place lead to a one star review. This is a really nice hotel. The modern rooms are lovely. It's in a quiet location, but it's only a fifteen minute walk to the old Axel hotel and the gay area.
And yes, if there was the right deal I would probably stay here again. But based on the website we were left just a little bit disappointed for a few reasons, and I would advise against the fact of this being a "gay hotel" being a big factor in your decision making. And certainly no good if you fancy a swim.
Oh and if you do stay, be sure to pick up a Barcelona map from reception. Their map (Axel branded) is fantastically helpful at highlighting the sights if you want to get out and explore the city. And finally, gay bar tip - La Chappelle. It's tiny so very busy, but incredibly cheap, generous measures and friendly.
