PROS:
My girlfriend and i chose Sandos Eco Resort to celebrate our one year anniversary. We stayed for 12 nights from October 1st to October 13th. First of all the place is very unique and huge ! The jungle setting is really cool and the wildlife is so different for us ! The monkeys are very friendly and always came by our balcony to visit. Check in was pretty easy , Maria took great care of us ! Our room was beautiful and very big ! Huge shower, good size balcony with a jacuzzi tub. And they always stocked our mini bar ! Our Concierge when we arrived was Jorge. He was super attentive and seemed to love his job ! Unfortunately we only saw him for the first few days of our trip and then he was never back again. We are very picky eaters but we came to love the Italian restaurant La Toscana. Luisa the hostess was always super welcoming when we came and always made sure we were okay! The buffet and the Brazil restaurant was good for breakfast. Didn’t really prefer the steakhouse or the Riviera except the dessert was amazing ! The beach is small but still nice to see. We went to evening shows at the Theatre and loved them! The pools were nice , our favorite spot was the adults only, hanging out in the upper level pool. Elizabeth from the Brazil was AMAZING. She brought us drinks without asking, always checked on us and was the nicest person we met! Everyone who worked there however was very nice and nobody made us uncomfortable or treated us poorly. We would definitely come back here another time it’s worth the experience! Thank you Sandos !

CONS:

The main problem we seemed to have was with room service. They would claim our food would be ready in a certain amount of time, and then end up taking almost an hour and half and several times it was cold and the quesadillas were almost bare ! They fixed it one time and we got burnt quesadillas in return .They also forgot our order one night. This problem persisted so that was a disappointment. This area definitely needs improvement. I also paid for a romantic package for my girlfriend with roses which our concierge Jorge made it look so beautiful! However we were supposed to get balloons as well and when i complained i was told the Mexican government had ‘banned balloons for the week’ which was completely false because the next day we saw balloons in the resort. Not too sure where that came from. Also the TV channels are all in spanish, i feel like you should have an option if you don’t speak the language.

We stayed in adult only section building 72 with select club access. Great location by the lobby and very quiet. We enjoyed the adult pool and dinner at the poolside Brazillian Restaurant. Adult only section of beach was very peaceful and had great snacks during day! Do not miss going to the Japenese Restaurant! Make your reservations when you arrive. Definitely visit Elvin at the lobby Elephant Bar. He is very entertaining and makes great drinks! Resort has so many things to do you never need to leave. Love the cenote and all the Eco paths. We loved all the nature and animals that are the resorts pets. Staff is very helpful and goes above and beyond to make your vacation wonderful! This was the perfect resort for our honeymoon! We will be back!

We chose this resort for our family vacation. We were travelling with 16 people: 9 adults, one teenager, 9, 6, 4, 3, 3, and 2 aged children.

Check in took a long time, which was frustrating with small kids after a lengthy flight and bus ride. Once we were checked in we were dropped off with our luggage to our room (5301 - bottom floor). In our room were two adults, a 2 and 4 year old. The room contained one king size bed and a hide a bed. They had considerately provided a crib (which we did not use).

The room was quite run down. The furniture was damaged, the shower and tub leaked any everything was simply shabby and uncomfortable. The king size bed was extremely hard and unforgiving.

Filtered water and a mini bar were provided in the room, as well as local television and a safe. The water was room temperature, which wasn't the most appetizing. The bathroom set up did not allow for much privacy, as the shower and tub were open to the rest of the room, separated by a thin curtain. For our room it was fine, but not for the adult and the 17 year old.

While we had enjoyed the golf cart ride to be dropped off at our room, we found there weren't many opportunities to use it through the week. It was a long walk from our building to the beach or any dining options.

The beach was lovely, well maintained and many chairs available. As were the pools and water slides. We did find that the kids waterpark was overwhelming as caregivers, as it is pretty much hands on. There were no quiet spaces for the younger kids to play while the older kids slid. The new adult water slides were a big hit! Be warned - no go pros or buttons on your shorts allowed.

There were many dining options and we got to experience every a la carte option. El Templo was fantastic, the food and the experience, as was the Brazilian restaurant. The steak house was also nice, the Italian restaurant was nothing special (but we loved their buffet lunch!). La Riviera was awful. Service was almost non existent and we waiting over and hour for our main course to arrive.

There were many bars, located nice and close to all the different areas we frequented. Depending on the bartender, and how much you tipped dictated how strong your drinks were.

The kids club seemed unorganized and slightly unsafe. Didn't feel comfortable using it, however others in our party did.

The shows were not particularly well done, but the kids enjoyed them.

They claimed free wifi, but it did not work reliably.

I was really worried about staying here after reading some of the reviews on TripAdvisor. We even considered cancelling our trip but are so glad we didn't. The hotel is set in wonderful grounds amongst jungle, cenotes and fabulous wildlife.

Our check in was smooth. It was a little slow but we were not hard sold anything. In fact apart from a few phone calls asking us to go to reception to collect our welcome packs we were left alone to enjoy our stay.

We were in a eco junior suite which was perfect for our family of four as it had a bunk bed which saved lots of arguments. It was nicely furnished with good air conditioning and a well stocked mini fridge. We loved this room.

We prefer a quieter holiday so avoided the main pool but when we did try it we did not notice it was dirty as some have mentioned.

We loved the beach. Yes it is rocky but not a problem with water shoes. Just a short walk out there was plenty of colourful fish to see using the complimentary snorkeling equipment. If you walk to the left of the hotel just as the hotel ends there is a sandy entrance into the sea. The sea was wonderful. The beach was very natural and we loved it.

We did visit the sister hotel to visit their beach. The beach there was beautiful but so busy so whilst we were glad to visit we were happy we were staying at the Eco Caracol. Getting a taxi was easy and relatively inexpensive of you fancy a change of scenery.

We tended to use the tortuga pool. It was close to the renovations but that did not affect us. It had a pool bar and we never had a problem finding a lounger.

Our girls 12 and 10 loved the water park. Yes not all the slides were open but that did not stop them enjoying it. It had a lovely area for small children and again we always found a lounger.

We also enjoyed swimming in the cenote. What a cool thing to do in a hotel. A definite highlight was the wildlife. So many coatis, monkeys, iguanas, turtles and peacocks. Amazing.

Yes the mosquitos were evil. I tried every repellant going and could not avoid being bitten at times. However this would be difficult to control in a natural environment like this.

The shows exceeded our expectations. My 10 year old absolutely adored the Mayan shows and it was nice to feel we were in Mexico rather than an over-sanatised hotel. The hero and villans show was also fun.

We were not expecting much from the food but we were pleasantly surprised. We did not have a bad meal. In fact on the whole the food was exellent. We particularly liked the beachfront fish restaurant and the staff there were excellent. The Japanese tepenyaki was fun and we thought the choice of restaurants was very good. The restaurants were hot but nothing we could not bear. We ate very well all week and never had any tummy problems.

On the whole we thoroughly enjoyed our week here. Yes it is not as luxurious as some of the hotels in Mexico but it offered us such a wonderful Mexican experience. In fact the second week we stayed at the Grand at Moon Palace and we all agreed that the Sandos was the one we most enjoyed. Thank you Sandos.

Lots to do on this big resort, my husband, 18 year old son and myself stayed for 11 nights over Christmas and still had to look at the map to find certain places on the last day.
Loads of wildlife to see, from monkeys, raccoons, lizards etc.
We were lucky to be upgraded to the gold band, which gave us access to adult only pool and beach.
Our room was cleaned every day and mini bar restocked most days.
The staff in the restaurants and bars were lovely and friendly, especially Carlos and Vicky in the Brazilian restaurant were we had breakfast most mornings. However the reception staff were less than helpful, as I asked if they could look into getting me another room for my son, of which they never replied, probably because there was always a massive queue at check in, even late at night.
Restaurants were good, especially the Japanese and Mediterranean restaurants.
Smell from the mangrove can be strong, but it is not sewage as other people stated.
Shame about the rocky beach, but the jungle and wildlife more than makes up for this.
Before my trip I sent 4 emails requesting a second room for my son and advising that this holiday was to celebrate my 50th birthday and my sons 18th birthday (2 direct to the hotel, via contact page and 2 to the web relations of which were never answered)
However we would defiantly recommend this resort!
