My now husband and I got married at Sandos Caracol on November 11th this year. We started the process through a travel agent 1 year ago. The process was a little rocky sometimes as it took days to get a response from the resort sometimes however, once we arrived everything was bliss. We stayed at the resort for one week in the Penthouse suite overlooking the pool and the beach. The weather was perfect, it only rained one day but it was still very warm outside. We had 60 guests at our destination wedding and they all also speak very highly of their experiences. They have a lot of amenities and entertainment options. The resort is very large so there's always something to do when you are ready to head in from the beach or pool for the day. We played with the monkeys, friends swam in the on-site cenote (swimming hole), they have ancient ruins on the property and you can bike around the jungle trails. Sail boats & kayaks are free to take out as often as you'd like. The staff is very friendly and happy to be there (don't forget to tip often in appreciation for their hard work!). The spa is amazing, I got my wedding hair & nails done as well as 2 massages and the service was excellent! We couldn't have asked for a better wedding planner (Andrea Gonzalez), she was very helpful at all times and our wedding went seamlessly! They have a store on site for any last minute needs or souvenir shopping. They have a laundry service as well and our room cleaning service was superb!

The only suggestions I would have is for the restaurants to be open more. We often got up and moving around 11am and all restaurants are closed from 10:30-12:30 so we had to eat our "brunch" at the snack bar more often that we would have liked (nachos, hamburgers, hot dogs). Most of our guests had the same complaint. I understand they need to close to prepare for the lunch/dinner services but if they could at least just rotate one of their buffet restaurants a day to be open during those hours it would give late-risers a chance to eat some "real food". Otherwise, the snack bar is amazing & we gathered with many of our friends there late into the night as it's the central hub that stays open past the bars closing - lots of memories were made on those swings!

Thank you Sandos for an absolutely wonderful experience - I know that we and our guests will be recommending your resort to others and will be back soon!

We arrived on October 6th 2007 and stayed 2 weeks, we did the Signature Vacation Maya Promo. Never again will we go to Sandos or use Signature Vacations. We arrived at the Hotel and we were given our bands and told were our room was, it wasn't what I wanted so I told them that I would like to have the room closer to the beach, which I confirmed and agreed to pay extra for if I needed to, we were told it would be ready for the next day. We did go down with our suitcases before 10:30am as the letter they left us instructed. We were told at that point we wouldn't be moving until the next day, I had to show her the letter and finally they found something for us and moved us that afternoon. After moving we came back to the main lobby to have a drink and ask some questions, we were greeted by a women in a blue shirt and a Sandos Caracol name tag. She took us and sat with us telling us about this information session we could go to in the morning and she would give us a 50 dollar bonus to use on an excursion. I started to get very suspicious when she told us that we had to have a credit card, they didn't need the number they just needed to see the label and name on the card. This took about 2.5 hours out of our vacation. We discussed this and thought it sounded like time shares. We opted not to go to the meeting, she told us it was a free breakfast, but we thought it wasn't worth it seeing that we were all ready getting a free breakfast. We wanted to sleep in and enjoy our holiday on our time, well the phone rang at 7:30am asking us if we were going to make it for the meeting, I couldn't believe that they would call at that hour. We refused the invitation and she asked us if we would like to rebook for another day, we said no and she said good-bye. Everyday we were approached by these Time Share sellers. The last time we were approached it was 15 mins before the bus came to get us to come home. I am really annoyed that they would do that to customers who have paid good money to be there to relax not be harassed. 5th Ave yes I understand all that but not the resort.
The grounds are well kept. Our room was clean everyday but many times we had to ask for towels and to have the fridge restocked.
Our room lost power the only room in the building we couldn't believe it. I had a lighter and tried to ring the front and there was no answer anywhere so we had to get security he went somewhere and got help and about 1/2 hour later we had power. Everything had been out in our room for all medication to be warm and it all needed to be replaced the next day. (insulin)
Our room had huge ants and nothing was done about it so I had to go and buy a big can of Raid. I would defiantly be prepared with Raid and a really good bug repellent. It is surrounded by jungle vegetation so it is inevitable to be bit a few times, and we expected that. We saw them fogging for the mosquitos 2 times when we were there and I think it works, it certainly hurts your throat though so if you hear them go the other way. I do have a video of it is in the Videos section posted as fogging.

The VIP card does not give you everything it says you get on the web site. We didn't receive any discount on Laundry service or Spa Service, nor did we get the room upgrade, we think they are mostly reserved for those who buy into the time share.
The beach is rocky but if you have water shoes it makes it easier to get into the sandy areas, it is pretty though and you do see beautiful fish.
The entertainment at this resort really in non-existent. and if you are there two weeks you are really quite bored by the end of it.
They bring in a few market sellers but if you don't have cash you can't get money anywhere on the resort you have to go into Playa. There is not music or anything exciting at the Select Club Pool, we went there once and never went back it was pretty boring. We spent most of our time at the beach and trying to ignore the negatives.
There is management everywhere and when they are around your service changes and it seems to get more serious. Management seems very intimidating.
The staff is wonderful and really will help you out and are very friendly. They work so hard.

Our highlights were Hector at Guess Services very nice and helpful. Marcos at the Select Club Bar, Jose the Security at the Select Club and Santiago at the Lobby Bar.
We are very happy we made the friends that we made when we were there, we had many laughs.

This was our 2nd trip to the Maya Riviera and we will return but, never to this resort I would never recommend it either.
This resort has serious issues.

Just came back from our stay and overall it was nice, until we checked out and were shocked by our laundry bill. We've never stayed at a resort that didn't have laundry facilities available to guests. So we used the service and bagged up our clothes and gave them to the staff. We got them back that evening and everything was nice and clean and folded. We were pleased until we found out the cost. We filled out the form and signed it as instructed. It did say how much the items cost in pesos and I admit I didn't sit down and add up the cost before I turned it tin. But how much can 2 loads of laundry possibly cost? 2000 pesos! Or approx $200 USD! I was outraged! We didn't find out the cost until check out time and had to leave to get to the airport. The manager was not available to discuss. I was completely disgusted! It was a complete ripoff!
Also I was eaten alive by mosquitos while staying there. And the room smelled horribly of mold. I would not stay there again. Oh, and we had no shower head in our room! Just a pipe coming out of the wall! The front desk staff was rude. The maids and staff in the facility was very nice but they have no control over such things!

Dear guest,

I am extremely sorry to read that you had a great time in our hotel and as a result of a unique event on your departure, your impression in terms of how you rate us, would be so poor, well the lowest rate possible, particularly when considering that your observation is not reflected of the information we provide to you and all guest related to the laundry prices.

I can assure to you and readers of this internet site and I know that most customers who ever stayed in this hotel would agree with me, that there is not way in which you could have only known of the amount you would be charged for the laundry service you used in our hotel upon departure as the list that you signed accepting terms and conditions and in which you detailed the clothes to be washed, clearly indicated the price for each individual item (clothes), furthermore I must stress that to have over $US200.00 you have a significant amount of items (individual pieces of clothes).

We are not supposed to have a pipe as a shower, I agree with you.. I believe that if as you suggest, in fact you had one in your bathroom, the proper way to raise it and get it corrected, was to speak to the front desk, customer’s service or even, to request to speak to a manager. During your entire stay I was in the hotel for an average of 14 hours a day, not only me, but also our hotel subdirector and room divisions’ manager. Our offices are located around the lobby as well as our pictures. We would have been more than happy to listen to your concerns and act where appropriate in order to assist you and correct whatever needed to be corrected.

I am sorry that to see that you believe that writing a negative review with information which is not accurate was the right way to get something resolved.

Have a pleasant weekend,

Luís Ramírez

Checking into the hotel

Web Reservations

I want to point out that Darren from Web reservations was fantastic. We always responded to my emails prior to our arrival. He is left us chocolate dipped strawberries in our room for our anniversary and a bottle of champagne.

CHECKING IN

Checking into the hotel was quick and we did not have any problems. Our SANDO4U in worked and they gave us a free room upgrade. The only problem was they gave us a concierge (timeshare sales person) to show us around the hotel and offer us discounts if you went to their presentation. The good thing about the concierge is that they show you around the hotel and tell you about everything.

ROOM

The room was pretty musty smelling when you walked in but got better once you opened up the door and the A/C was going. The beds are also hard. The stock your frig in your room every couple of days and house keeping was great

RESORT
I liked that everything was spread out throughout the resort and you have to walk a little bit to get anywhere. This resort might not be good for people that have a hard time getting around. I meet a single mom with two kids and one was in a wheelchair and she said the resort was rest and very accommodating to their needs

LAUNDRY
Make sure you bring plenty of clothes unless to want to pay and arm and leg for laundry service there are no washer and dryers on site. If you have kids this could be a big deal.

Restaurants

There are 3 buffet restaurants they are all a little different. The la Laguna was the biggest and the most crowded. The Italian was also a little crowded but the food was good and the Mexican was the best and least crowded. It was great for breakfast and dinner. There is a coffee bar open at night behind the Mexican restaurant and it is great. During the day for lunch they have a barbeque on the beach with hamburgers and hotdogs and that worked out well too. Especially for the kids they really like that and we didn’t have to leave the beach to go get lunch. In the afternoon the kids wanted ice cream and you can either get a to go cup from La Laguna and get ice cream or at the snack bar they have ice cream cones sometimes. We would hit the snack bar after the beach in the afternoon for chip and salsa and the kids liked the French fries. The snack bar could be a little better we went to the Sandos Playacar resort and their snack bar looked like a whole restaurant with lots of choices. We only went to the Mediterranean Al a cart and it was good, but with kids we didn’t want to make reservations.

ACTIVITIES
We went to the water park on our first day and it was good, but it is better for kids that can’t really swim or under age 5. They have a nice bar there and everything was very clean. My kids like the main pool and the beach. If you want a beach chair around the pool or on the beach get your chair early in the morning as you have to get your new towels down by the pool anyway. Around the pool they have great activities going on all day long. Don’t miss Bingo at 3pm.

BEACH
The beach is great for families and people with little kids there are some rocks in the water but you can see them since that water is so clear you can see the rock

All in all I thought the hotel was great it is not a 5 star hotel but it really meets all your needs and everyone is very nice and they all seem to work hard to make sure you have a good time and my kids already asked if they could go back and we just got home last night.

We visited the Sandos in the middle of April 2014 for 2 weeks. We arrived at the hotel around 4pm and were taken to our room via golf buggy! Beware when you check in they will ask for a deposit (we can't remember how much) but you can opt out of this. If you opt out of paying, it simply means you can't have laundry service or telephone calls from the room. Our double room was in the jungle but was spacious, relatively clean and tidy. I only say relatively because there were tiny bugs in the sink through the whole stay. We didn't stay in the 'Elite Member' or 'Adult Select' zones - wouldn't say those upgrades were worth the money. We met a couple that were in Select and turns out they don't get much more than we did. The resort was huge and we did get lost on our way back to the room on our first night, as did most people. You get used to where everything is after 2-3 days. The food was great and the steak and fish a la carte was a favourite! The only food we were not too keen on was breakfast where the bacon etc was quite burnt. The staff are lovely and cannot do enough for you - Emma who worked in the lobby bar and Sonja in the Mexican restaurant were amazing. We went for a romantic boat ride with Jesus which was free of charge. We went round the cenotes in the resort grounds with champagne and chocolate strawberries. We didn't sit by the pool at all on this holiday and went straight down the beach where there were always sun beds available and it wasn't too busy and loud. Beware of the rocks as you walk in the sea! Evening entertainment was pretty standard - the Michael Jackson show was brilliant but go and get your seats early as it gets packed in there very quickly.

We did 2 excursions on this holiday. 1) Xcaret is a large national park where you can see the animals, traditional Mayan villages, a Mayan evening show and can interact with the animals. It was about a half hour coach journey away. This place is amazing and my partner and I would definitely recommend to anybody staying in the Playa Del Carmen area. Our rep (Stephanie - Thomas Cook) didn't inform us just how expensive some things could be if you did opt to do extra activities when there so take extra cash! We got there and paid $38 each to swim with sting rays and $59 each for the Adrenalina speed boat ride (awesome!). We also did the underground river ride which is included in your entry fee, they provide life jackets, snorkels etc. Dinner was included in our trip - wasn't the best dinner but there were other restaurants there to choose from.
2) Chichen Itza. This is definitely something you have to see whilst you're out there but the heat is different to the heat of Playa Del Carmen. Be sure to take hats, plenty of sun cream and water. There's very little shade and hardly any breeze, it was nearly 50 degrees and it made hard to enjoy it as much as we would have liked to. Again the lunch there wasn't great. The coach journey was roughly 2.5 hours but we stopped off and purchased some local souvenirs where some of the money they get goes to the local Mayan children, very reasonably priced! After Chichen Itza we were taken to a cenote which was 150 deep, which was very refreshing after the heat we'd endured!

Taxi service from the hotel is great, which is 140 pesos to 5th Avenue in Playa Del Carmen where there are lots of shops and restaurants to choose from. We had some lovely local food at Las Tacos and La Paria. My partner treated me to a ring from a jewellery store called Genesis - where Coco works! Lovely jewellery at good rates. You do get hassled to go into peoples shops, see their stalls etc but you get that anywhere you go abroad! They're all very friendly people and always smiling!

Again - a big thanks to Sonja, Emma and Jesus!!
