The absolute state of this! Good on her and her colleagues for standing up to these horrible men and calling out their abusive behaviour.

Didn't Reform expel candidates who behaved badly? Although IIRC that didn't include shouting violent threats at women or intimidating them in public, slashing their tyres etc.

I feel the same about the far right members of Reform, yet apparently their choices are "understandable" rather than "incompatible with British values". Despite the fact they are, well, incompatible with British values.

Extremism shouldn't be encouraged, no matter the ethnicity or background of the extremist.

Not a Reform voter, but I noted they got rid of the men straightaway. Whats happening about this mob or the candidate who stood there smiling?
I mean realistically there are far more acts and threats of violence and intimidation and brutalisation of women coming from extremist islamists, here or globally, its impossible to miss.
My days of looking the other way at the abuse of women because of 'be kind' are over.
I dont care which group of men and their handmaidens are responsible, nor their religious or ideological justification.

Why has this thread devolved into whataboutism derailments over which groups of awful men are worse than the other? For fuck's sake.

Maybe we should change the subject to Fred West and Jimmy Savile while we're at it.

Might just not bother starting threads if they're all going to end up like this, what's the point. Same derails literally every time.

Agree, in that the intimidation is pretty new. Overall the election results are worrying in that they don’t demonstrate much enthusiasm for Labour and very little for the Conservatives. Instead fragmentation and oddballs. Then on MN people seem determined to prevent women having a constructive conversation.

I don’t want to get tin hat but the gender nonsense came from nowhere, complete with thread disrupters. Now this. Important to discuss, but obviously some people don’t want us to.

Why is it "appeasement" to try to understand and respond to disaffected Muslim voters, and "necessary" to understand and respond to disaffected white working class voters?

Seems like double standards to me.

I think the problem here is that Oct 7th was mentioned as a source of greater Islamophobia, but the real increase in hatred has been towards Jews, and it is Jews who cannot walk along the street feeling safe, feels safe at work, be safe going to school, not Muslims. That was not addressed at all.
We now have some MPs who are openly in support of Hamas terrorists, too.

Thats extremely rude. I am not going to respond in kind. I am not an apologist for any misogynists - unlike many on here I'm looking forward to misogyny being made a hate crime.

My opinion is this issue has been caused by a combination of Internet driving tastes for conflict, and George Galloway stirring up trouble.

We need a better way to deal with extremists, across the board.

Sorry that was far too rude of me, I've asked MNHQ to retract.

Yes, but we all know it's not just any men. But we're not supposed to say

Because we're left in terror, there's maniacs among them.

I was horrified. I can't imagine them abusing a man like that. Some of them just can't stand a strong woman daring to stand for Parliament. These extremists need to be stopped, it's getting worse.
She was so shaken afterwards, I felt for her.

Too true: worse, even apologists for Oct 7th.
It's not rape if it's Jewish women, it seems!

She said she had faced threats against her, her family, and her supporters and was labelled an infidel and baby killer as anger over Labour's position on Gaza played out through the campaign. Speaking from the stage of the counting hall at Birmingham ICC she said the taunts, abusive slogans, harassment of activists had fuelled her through a campaign that she said was intended to stir up Muslim voters, she said.

I had no idea. That's so shocking! "Infidel"?
She is allowed to have an opinion? Obviously not.

I am struggling towards the idea that a person who openly shows support for terrorism perhaps should be de-selected or even expelled from the Commons.

I think it’s an inevitable consequence of identity politics, when groups can claim some sort of immunity from criticism/prosecution because of gender identity, religion etc. These men are so sure that levelling accusations of transphobia or Islamaphobia, or any phobia are so effective at shielding them that they don’t really fear consequences.

It can be any group who feels emboldened by being deemed exempt from the rules that govern the rest of society.

I cannot imagine how that is allowed. I was shocked enough about Jess Phillips, but Shabana Mahmood needing armed police? I thought Hamas was a proscribed organisation?

The Muslim Vote ran a slick social media campaign that disavowed “dirty politics” and pledged to “reinvigorate the spirit of democracy”. However, an investigation by The Times last week revealed that it endorsed unsuccessful candidates who spread antisemitic conspiracy theories, was accused of supporting intimidatory tactics online against candidates it opposed and denounced Muslims who canvassed for Labour as “parasites”.
