Onboarding: The next generation of Low Carbon Solutions talent In this ongoing series, we meet some of the newest talent working in the energy transition at Low Carbon Solutions. Introducing David Keatley, hydrogen business development advisor at ExxonMobil Low Carbon Solutions. His current role in one sentence: David works on Baytown blue hydrogen and ammonia business development, helping to commercialize low carbon ammonia internationally. Why he chose Low Carbon Solutions: “I think the biggest thing is scale. The Baytown project we’re planning is the largest low-carbon hydrogen project in the world. And it’s coming at a time where the global market of carbon abatement is at an inflection point. In my previous role, I was working on addressing similar challenges in the transportation space, and we often interacted with large, established energy companies. One business that we always followed was ExxonMobil, because when ExxonMobil starts doing something, they commit to it. That's what I've seen on the inside now.” The impact he expects to make in the energy transition: “There’s a huge opportunity for industry globally to reduce carbon emissions. And being able to help facilitate this decarbonization, whether in manufacturing, power, or other industries, is super exciting.” On ramping up onto the Baytown business development team during his first week: “It was one of the busiest workweeks of my year. So definitely, it’s been good to hit the ground running. The fastest way you learn is by doing, and I learned a lot that week.” Two words to describe your new role: “I would say ‘dynamic’ but also ‘no surprises.’ This is pretty much as advertised.” Interested in joining David for dynamic opportunities to help lead the energy transition? Onboarding: The next generation of Low Carbon Solutions talent In this ongoing series, we meet some of the newest talent working in the energy transition at Low Carbon Solutions. Introducing Collin Gaskill, a business development advisor focused on hydrogen. His current role in one sentence: Dedicated to creating a new marketplace for low-carbon hydrogen and its derivatives in hard-to-abate industries, Collin is focused on the U.S. Gulf Coast. Why he chose Low Carbon Solutions: “I’m excited to be in hydrogen – it’s a new space for the company and this is the frontier of the energy transition outside of renewable electricity. The pieces aren’t set, and you get to shape and influence how that market is going to develop and how ExxonMobil fits into that.” What has surprised Collin since arriving in October 2023? “It’s a pleasant surprise, but I was surprised by the volume of resources the company is putting behind this – the sheer number of people being onboarded, and the number of projects being looked at in different disciplines, like carbon capture and storage, hydrogen, and lithium.” What advice does Collin have for someone considering joining Low Carbon Solutions? “It's hard work and there’s a lot to be done in a short period of time, so anyone considering joining should be ready for that. But the work is exciting and fun. Every day is different, with new things coming up by the hour.” Two adjectives Collin uses to describe his new role: “Dynamic and complex – but not in a bad way. This is figuring out new ways of business, working with new customers, and navigating changes on the policy side.” Interested in joining Collin to be at the epicenter of delivering real world progress? • The Smackover formation in southwest Arkansas is home to ExxonMobil Low Carbon Solutions' first planned lithium project, which will use Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE), a process that is expected to have about two-thirds less carbon intensity than hard-rock mining. With a century of experience in the subsurface and crystallization, ExxonMobil is applying existing skills for new capabilities. We’re a premium partner with the experience, infrastructure, and scale to provide scalable, end-to-end solutions to our customers. Customers are seeking consistent, domestic supplies of lithium that can offer more transparency on how this critical mineral is developed. We can deliver that and leverage our existing relationships with auto manufacturers. We continue to demonstrate real-world progress as we evaluate new global growth opportunities, using learnings from the Smackover formation to help deliver reliable supplies to our transportation customers. • MARIA QUEZADA (Mayela), Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) Strategy Lead at ExxonMobil Low Carbon Solutions, is always thinking about how her customers in hard-to-abate sectors can more easily adopt emission-reducing technologies. For industries such as power generation, steel and cement, carbon capture and storage (CCS) is a solution that can deliver significant emissions reductions. But to truly deliver this technology at scale will require having the right infrastructure in place. To address this need, ExxonMobil Low Carbon Solutions has made significant steps towards expanding its CCS network in the US with the acquisition of Denbury Inc. “By investing in CCS infrastructure, we are making this technology a more reliable and commercially-viable solution for our customers,” says Quezada. Today, we are excited to announce our second major carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) project with CF Industries, one of the world’s largest ammonia producers, in Yazoo City, Mississippi. We’re proud of the #realworldprogress and collaboration with CF Industries in helping them achieve their 2030 emissions intensity reduction goals. We have executed a definitive commercial agreement with CF Industries to transport and permanently store up to 0.5 million metric tons per year (MTA) of captured carbon dioxide (CO2) from their Mississippi facility. This project expects to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 50% of the site’s total CO2 emissions, and this is expected to begin in 2028. This agreement marks a new milestone for ExxonMobil: bringing the total CO2 we’ve agreed to store for customers up to 5.5 MTA. CF Industries expects the project to qualify for tax credits under Section 45Q of the Internal Revenue Code, which provides a credit per metric ton of CO2 sequestered. Our first project with CF Industries is expected to begin in 2025 at the CF Industries facility in Donaldsonville, Louisiana. CF Industries will leverage our CCS capabilities and we will work together on sequestering up to 2 MTA of CO2 annually. From our President Dan Ammann: “We’re serious about expanding carbon capture – a safe, proven solution for hard-to-decarbonize industries. Our agreement with CF Industries is the latest example of how we can help industrial customers achieve significant progress, quickly and economically.” Read the full press release here: https://bit.ly/3Yl9g6Q. Onboarding: The next generation of Low Carbon Solutions talent This is an ongoing series where we’ll meet some of the new talent who joined Low Carbon Solutions over the past year. We’ll learn about what motivates them to work in the energy transition and get a glimpse into their new roles. First up is Abhinav Charan, head of commercial optimization in CCS. His current role in one sentence: He helps optimize the CCS ecosystem in the U.S. Gulf Coast. Why he chose Low Carbon Solutions: “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to come to an organization that has the wherewithal and the capabilities to really drive the energy transition, build a compelling new business, and frankly, drive market creation. It’s truly exciting to be in the middle of the action and help shape the energy transition story as it unfolds.” Abhinav’s view on the CCS ecosystem in the U.S. Gulf Coast: “The Gulf Coast is the leading global hub for low carbon solutions. You're able to leverage some of the CO2 policy around carbon capture and sequestration and use that as a monetization pathway for emissions or leverage the enhanced oil recovery pathway, or even look at industrial sales to use carbon dioxide for various product uses across a diverse set of industries. So ultimately you end up with a commodity that can be leveraged in different ways to create value for the corporation and society. And this ties back directly to the whole equation that we’re working towards: We’re driving the energy transition to help society get to net zero, and also building a compelling business that creates and maximizes value from this opportunity.” Two words that describe your job: “Energizing and exciting in the same go.” Interested in joining Abhinav to be at the center of making a difference today?
