I just quit my 9-5 to drive for Uber for the summer 😳 Here’s why: 👉🏾 After 2.5 years of giving everything and more to a company (whose leadership team barely spoke to me yet I was running their largest account)…the minute I tried to exercise boundaries, utilize my approved PTO, or communicate about burnout, the narrative became that I was “insecure” and “no longer passionate” (instead of acknowledging the truth of being overworked and underpaid). 👉🏾 I was told I was “passive aggressive” and that I had “an attitude” for asking for extra prep time for a meeting (I asked 3 times the week before if I needed to attend or lead the meeting and was told no; a few hours before the meeting I was told plans had changed and that I had to lead regardless of what else was on my plate). 👉🏾 I became exhausted with over-explaining myself and feeling like a child in the workplace when I am a grown, accountable, productive, creative, and passionate adult. If you know me, you know I work HARD. However, I made a vow to leave all abusive relationships and that includes leaving jobs. I hesitated to post this, but I know I am helping someone by speaking up. Employees are essentially brand ambassadors for a company, believe it or not—they should be treated well. If humanity isn’t at the center of your business, I really don’t know what you’re doing. Fear exists, but it’s not my full-time reality. I trust that I WILL BE MORE THAN OKAY. If you want to see for yourself, I’ll be sharing more about this journey to my YouTube soon 🤭 https://lnkd.in/gf3wWzdC. Idk exactly what’s next, but Uber will allow me to support people daily and offer a smile so I will explore joyfully. I’m letting the transition be as messy as it needs to be so I can be as free as I wish to be. #wellbeingatwork #burnoutrecovery #entrepreneurialspirit #freshstart #wellnessmatters

UPDATE: My first vlog re: my Uber experience is live now on my YouTube. THANK YOU for all of the loving comments, support, and advice. I hope the documentation of this journey serves you well ❤️ Watch here: https://youtu.be/03Y0MVU_VKk?si=7hjUbqC-36KL3yWA

I'm bothered that you were treated this way. I don't know you, but you sound like an ideal employee. I hope you will find a lot of peace in your summer of finding something new. I know race and gender don't have to be an ingredient in every story, but it does sound like it's possible that you were expected to act "a certain way" to make your superiors happy. And sometimes "a certain way" isn't who someone is. I hope your next job is excited to have a strong woman in their mix.

If you like grocery shopping, try Shipt. It is a good place to get tips for shopping and delivery. May help supplement your Uber income, with less gas. 🙏 I have reached an age, as a woman, when I just cannot stomach another mansplain from an incompetent, under qualified, condescending friend of the boss anymore. Unfortunately, they seem to be leaders in every US corporate environment. I am looking to work with a woman who has been given the freedom to lead. I will support them with everything I have. We will not only survive this, we will prevail.

Good for you. Life is too short! I wish that I had done what you are doing more than once in my career. People will tell you to push through it, that it will get better--no, it does not. I worked for a mortgage company that was the most toxic place I had ever worked. Never again will I work in a place that allows that type of toxicity. Keep your chin up! The girl mom in me is wanting to tell you safety first. Always be aware of your surroundings. Always listen to your gut. And, if it is legal where you live, buy a stun gun. (hopefully you won't need to use it). Most of all...have fun!

This is an incredible post! I (and probably 1 million others) deeply relate to what you shared. I can assure you that whatever is on the other side of your horizon is going to be magical. I'm about 1.5 years out from my own corporate drop out, and I'm now blessed to help folks reconnect to their purpose and take the challenging steps to get there. It can be so beautiful, but it starts with the difficult choice. BEAMING CARE and encouragement your way!

Tyler this is BEYOND real and I believe every word you wrote. I applaud your courage to speak up, do something different, and prioritize your wellness. And I admire your faith. Quotes/thoughts I keep near and dear to me when facing daunting situations is to remember that what awaits the ‘abyss of the unknown is a featherbed,’ and that whatever the decision, it’s just the beginning; the universe is conspiring for you in your favor. (Yes—I’m a “The Alchemist” super fan!) Sending you so much love and good vibes on your journey and I’ll be following your YouTube! 👀🎬💛✨

This resonates with me, and while the circumstances weren’t exactly the same, I was in a position where I took a strong bet on myself, knowing that I needed change. You will always be your the best advocate for yourself. Sometimes, what may appear to be a rash decision to others is the necessary change you need. Timing isn’t always perfect, and life is a journey that is rarely a short trek on flat ground. Sometimes you’ll encounter roadblocks, dead-ends, insurmountable mountains, and more. You know you best. Trust your gut, and lean into your support system as you navigate your next steps.

Hello Tyler, I noticed your posting via Gabrielle Nicole Pharms. Chart your rides in a journal. Listen to your riders tell their stories whether mundane, simple or fascinating. One of my past assistant's moved back to Austin, took up Uber. His personality was magnetic, his riders took pictures and gleefully shared stories. You’re going to have a great time. (However, don’t drive late at night, keep it as a day gig starting early am hours). ✌🏻
