Goodbye & THANK YOU, #Volkswagen! Dieselgate, Diess, Digital Communications & CARIAD - after five years, I decided to leave the VW Group at the end of July. The jobs have been a historic opportunity at a historic time: The automotive industry is undergoing the biggest transformation since we switched from carriages to vehicles: Electric mobility is just the first step, the much bigger one is the path to the software-defined vehicle. I wish all my great colleagues at CARIAD, Volkswagen Group and the brands continued success on this journey, don't let setbacks stop you, the path is the right one. And I wish everyone in the VW Group that even the last person understands that we can only work together and not against each other. Above all, I would like to thank the great people I have met during this time. Since I started in May 2019, I have always been lucky enough to work in very strong teams with exceptional players. We have achieved a lot: crisis communication around Dieselgate, then we redefined CEO communication to position Volkswagen for the future - strategically, internationally & innovatively: Surfing, LinkedIn, Reddit, Batman, CES, SXSW, Musk, Gates, Bezos…it was really a lot! I can say that in those five years, I was always where the music was loudest. Thank you for the opportunity & the trust! My next professional chapter: I haven't actually decided yet. One thing is certain: I will spend time with my family in July and August - and then (hopefully) jump into the next adventure in September.

Courage, creativity and standing up for your positions - particularly when times get rougher - are absolutely essential for really making a difference in (and with) communications. You have all these personality traits, combined with excellent people skills, a super sharp brain and the ability to see the story behind the story. You‘ve clearly made a difference at both Volkwagen and CARIAD and I‘m sure will do so in whichever team is lucky enough to work with you in the future. Looking forward to catching up in person! 😃

Lieber Michael, wir standen (die meiste Zeit) auf verschiedenen Seiten des Schachbretts. Du natürlich stets auf der „asozialen“, wie ich Dich höchstpersönlich zitieren möchte 🤣🤣. Trotzdem haben wir es geschafft, Rollenrespekt zu wahren - wobei die Fanfreundschaften unserer HSVs dazu bestimmt etwas zu beigetragen haben. Du bist ein Handwerker, der Strategie kann und Netzwerk hat. Diese Kombo ist Goldstandard bei uns im Konzern und es ist schade, dass Du gehst. Aber auch konsequent. Anyway: Egal, wo es Dich nun hinverschlägt, sollten wir in der Saison 2024/2025 wahlweise im Niedersachsenstadion oder Volkspark erneut in der Disziplin antreten, die zuletzt Michael Brendel so traumwandlerisch beherrschte. Und noch nen Meter mehr rausholen! Für Dich alles Gute! Und lass uns die Tage nochmal zu Bruno. Ihr habt damals Onkel Herberts Pils nicht bezahlt, munkeln Quellen. Das wäre ja geradezu asozial :-) … Wir müssen das recherchieren! Hier noch was fürs Poesiealbum:

@Magic Mike! Was machst Du denn bloß wieder für Moves? Da sehen wir uns grad gestern mal wieder (jetzt dämmert mir in diesem Zusammenhang einiges zum Tag), und wer schweigt mich als ebenfalls Ex-BILD-Kollegen an wie ein Grab, statt ne exklusive News rauszuballern --- 😎 Respekt für Kreativität und Durchschlagskraft, für mich war die CEO-Positionierung Diess zum Teil over the top, aber das war sein Stil. Dir gute Geschicke und eine schöne Job-Transition!!

Lieber Michael Es war wirklich eine spannende Zeit, ich in der Funktion Konzern Betriebsratsvorsitzender mit Heiko Lossie als Pressesprecher des Konzern Betriebsrates und du mit Onkel Herbert. Die externen Kollegen von Presse und Fernsehen waren dankbar für die Schlagzeilen, die wir geliefert haben. Es ging aber immer um die Sache und nie um persönliche Dinge. Ich bin schon gespannt, was du zukünftig machen wirst.

Thank you Michael for you massive contributions to Cariad‘s transformation. You always lived communications as a key tool for culture and change. You led the creation of an approachable and dialogue oriented experience for our global CARIAD team and externally. Your can-do attitude, speed, creativity and passion for our Group will be missed within your team, in CARIAD and in Volkswagen Group. The legacy of a professional Comms setup with amazing people will remain and we will continue our journey to making (and perceiving!) software as a competitive advantage for Volkswagen Group.
