"How do you L❤ VE when the world tells you you're not lovable?" 🏳️🌈 I Directed an emotional short film about the joy, music, and freedom found on the legendary Stonewall dancefloor featuring THE LEGENDARY DJ HONEY DIJON for Amazon Music, out NOW! Film here: https://lnkd.in/efHWXt9T In the 1960s, it was illegal to be gay. And yet the Judys, the drag queens, the down-low boys, the trans folx and the femmes found their way to this one bar in the Village. They held hands, they kissed, and they danced, finding freedom in the music of James Brown, and Judy Garland, and Curtis Mayfield and Little Richard. That wooden jukebox, blinking with color and brimming with bops, offered them the one thing that our society refused: acceptance. "The Sound of Stonewall" film uses music as a window into 60s queer history, and will live on at the Stonewall National Monument Visitors Center in NYC, the first LGBTQ+ Monument managed by the National Park Service. I'm so proud that this film was stacked with a crew of LGBTQIA+ folx -- made for us, by us. And that our editor Andrew Morrow, our EP John Farrey at Amazon, and I were adamant that the short showcase the Black and Brown folx, the lesbians, and the trans women who have helped carry this movement, often without recognition. Those critical folx who, even despite fighting similar struggles, were pushed aside so that white gay men could hold the mic. It's their faces who light up this film. (Thx to Brydie O'Connor for archival perfection!) And thank you to Honey, whose encyclopedic knowledge of music and absolute passion for her community + her history SHOWED UP in that studio way back in December '23.
