I'm so excited and proud to share the launch of our brand new program, called the Experienced Leaders Initiative (ELI). ELI helps people navigate the sometimes tricky transition post-primary career. This program is designed to help navigate the big questions of who you are, who you want to be, where you want to go, and what you want to do. Guided by Yale faculty and other smart people and all in the company of a cohort of ELI fellows who are working through the same questions. Check it out. Ask me questions. Spread the word. In my journey as a leader, I've come to realize that the power of questions sometimes outweighs the answers they provoke.   There are times when answers lie within us. The most impactful school leaders leverage actions within three buckets, leading instruction, leading people and leading their organization. As managers, it is critical to remember that we manage people, and not things. When we start with this awareness, we realize that treating people like objects or machines just isn’t going to cut it. I like to envision the person I am leading or managing standing alongside their loved ones, with their parents’ or guardians’ hands on their shoulders. They are loved. They are more than outcomes to many. I get to be a part of someone’s loved one’s work experience. I get to interact with someone’s mom or dad for hours a day. I don’t take this lightly. If your people know you care, you are already well on your way to leading in a transformational way. Treat others the way you’d like someone you love to be treated. 💕 You’ve got this!

From time to time, they let me speak to graduate students about this world of higher education that I have dedicated my career to. This afternoon, I got to speak to an incredibly insightful future cadre of higher education leaders. The questions were robust, and I've decided that from time to time I will share one that my higher ed colleagues all over the nation can help me answer because we should share different perspectives, because we need to fortify our ranks, and...well we all owe it to pay it forward. That's what leaders do right? So here's the first one I need your contribution on: "How have you maintained "critical hope" in higher education? That is, what steps have you taken to make sure you can both assess situations accurately, and maintain resilience and tenacity to continue the fight for gradual change?"

Earlier this week, it was so great to be sponsored by the University of Missouri Graduate Professional Council to facilitate a workshop on: Empowering Boundaries: Self-Advocacy for Graduate Students! Thanks so much GPC and other partners for hosting me! I shared tips and strategies for how to navigate the often political landscape of higher education with sometimes competing needs of leadership, management, faculty advisors, and peers all layers on top of family, friends, and your own needs. It's a lot to juggle at the same time as launching your graduate education and career. It was good to connect with graduate student leaders on how they can advocate for other students who may not have a direct supervisor who understands and respects values, especially with power differentials so great. There is so much collective potential power in students joining together. Harnessing that power is part of boundary work, actually. And boundaries are a taught skill set that are an important part of building resilience competency that is needed in this world of ongoing uncertainty. About a year ago I was actually on Mizzou's campus working directly with the Graduate School so I know their leadership is committed to paradigm shifting eduction into a transformative experience. It makes me realize the more I share of my work with organizations and leaders how much I value relationship building and understanding an organizational's culture so that together we can make impact.
