New situation report from the @CrisisReady team on the flooding in #Brazil. (https://lnkd.in/gZqTarTn) ❗Record levels of flooding, driven by heavy rainfall and storms, continues to severely affect the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil. As of May 13th, the death toll from these storms is 143 and over 327,000 people have been displaced from their homes. 👉 Significant population declines and returns have been detected across 54 of 105 districts within and nearby the areas of greatest flooding impact, based on data from Meta. Key mobility trends across the region are detailed in the "Movement" section of this report. Data from the Facebook platform on population is based on a high sample size (-17%) of the total population in Rio Grande do Sul. Baseline district level Facebook population is highly correlated with Brazil's census population, with a R2 value of 0.98. 🛰️ Remote sensing from EU Copernicus shows areas of riverine flooding across Rio Grande do Sul. Image data has been merged into a single time-frame for the purpose of understanding overall flooding impacts across the entire duration of these events. ⛈ #HurricaneBeryl has made landfall in southeastern #Texas as a Category 1 storm. ⚡ Nearly 3 million people are without power and thousands have been evacuating from coastal areas. 📢 New population dynamics analysis from the CrisisReady team for Texas shows that evacuations began for a large number of towns on July 6th and accelerated throughout July 7th. The city of Galveston, TX for instance registered a 17% decline in Facebook user population as of the evening of July 7th. Corpus Christi registered a decline of 5%. Many smaller beach communities including Surfside Beach and South Padre Island recorded rapid declines of 38% to 88%. 👉 At the ACS Place level the Facebook user population correlates extremely well with the general Census population, with an R2 value of .98. ‼️ New population dynamics analysis from the CrisisReady team of the impact of #HurricaneBeryl as of July 5th on the windward islands (Grenada. St. Vincent, St. Lucia, and Barbados). 👉 Significant recent increases in the St. George and Kingstown metro areas, above 1.5 standard deviations from pre-landfall population levels. 🛜 Internet access continues to come back online steadily across all affected countries. https://lnkd.in/gxeH8y88 Direct Relief Harvard Data Science Initiative

‼️New analysis from the CrisisReady team of change in population density from Data for Good at Meta for the windward islands in the eastern #Caribbean impacted by #HurricaneBeryl 👉 Mobility data confirms significant reductions in internet service across St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Grenada starting overnight on the 1st of July. 🛜 According to data from Cloudflare (https://lnkd.in/gQQAx6wb) an outage event for both countries began at 14:00 UTC on July 1st. 👫 During this time period population densities of Facebook users declined by 60% to 80% relative to the 90-day pre-event baseline. ⚡ The outage across both countries is not 100% but until more data is available it is difficult to differentiate between population change and signal outage. Most areas of St. Lucia and Barbados have seen population density recover above baseline as of July 2nd, with the exceptions of Canaries and Soufriere, St. Lucia. ⚠️ Facebook baseline user population is reasonably well correlated with the Census population across all four countries, at the administrative unit 1 level, with an R2 value of .778. https://lnkd.in/gWdzeNDE Direct Relief Harvard Data Science Initiative
