‼️New analysis from the CrisisReady team of change in population density from Data for Good at Meta for the windward islands in the eastern #Caribbean impacted by #HurricaneBeryl 👉 Mobility data confirms significant reductions in internet service across St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Grenada starting overnight on the 1st of July. 🛜 According to data from Cloudflare (https://lnkd.in/gQQAx6wb) an outage event for both countries began at 14:00 UTC on July 1st. 👫 During this time period population densities of Facebook users declined by 60% to 80% relative to the 90-day pre-event baseline. ⚡ The outage across both countries is not 100% but until more data is available it is difficult to differentiate between population change and signal outage. Most areas of St. Lucia and Barbados have seen population density recover above baseline as of July 2nd, with the exceptions of Canaries and Soufriere, St. Lucia. ⚠️ Facebook baseline user population is reasonably well correlated with the Census population across all four countries, at the administrative unit 1 level, with an R2 value of .778. https://lnkd.in/gWdzeNDE Direct Relief Harvard Data Science Initiative

I often dedicate time to researching information on various government websites like BLS, Census, FRED, BEA, and more. Recently, I came across a Census site predicting an active hurricane season. While these events can be catastrophic, they also offer opportunities for the electrical distribution community post-disaster. It's crucial to consider our preparedness in the face of such weather emergencies. Reflect on what the community might require during a disaster. From extension cords and portable generators to batteries, wire, and cable, there's a range of products to contemplate for potential needs. Stay informed, stay proactive, and let's be prepared for any challenges that may come our way. #DisasterPreparedness #CommunitySupport #ElectricalDistribution https://lnkd.in/gdbhffgP

The migration story of Southwest Florida has changed completely since Hurricane Ian (Sept. '22). Green on the map = more domestic residents moving in than out. Red = more move-outs than move-ins. This migration data leads the Census by roughly a year. Lee County, where 450K residents were evacuated before a 10ft storm surge, has been hit hard by outmigration. In 2021, Lee was the 3rd strongest domestic net migration county in #Florida (behind Pasco & Polk). Today, it ranked 2nd worst (behind Miami-Dade). Hurricane Ian destroyed or majorly damaged around 20K structures (source: National Weather Service). I wonder, how many of these will be be rebuilt? How many displaced residents will ever return? #jbrec #demographics #florida

"People often think of disasters as great equalizers. After all, a hurricane, tornado or wildfire doesn’t discriminate against those in its path. But the consequences for those impacted are not 'one-size-fits-all.'" Read the full article from Route Fifty for insights on the most vulnerable populations affected by disasters. Just created my first Geographic Information Systems (GIS) spatial Map! This map shows evacuation routes and demographic data by census tract for Houston, Texas. The darker blue tracts have a higher percentage of households without a vehicle. This pattern helps answer the question: Where in Houston should we provide evacuation assistance during a hurricane? The map in this app contains a Living Atlas layer of Houston evacuation routes and a layer of Houston demographic data. The demographic layer is styled using an Arcade expression that calculates the percentage of households without a vehicle. https://arcg.is/XCfqj

🌀 Today’s Hurricane in Context As Florida's Gulf Coast faces Hurricane Idalia, PolicyMap's Data Team updated the CDC Social Vulnerability Index (2020). This dataset can inform emergency responses in real-time. Identifying high-risk communities can prioritize efforts to evacuate vulnerable populations, pre-position resources, and plan post-disaster recovery. The insights gained could mean the difference between life and death, rapid recovery, and prolonged suffering. This data can be layered with flood maps and other socioeconomic and health factors. #PolicyMap #SocialVulnerabilityIndex #NaturalDisasters #HurricanePreparedness #Florida #PublicPolicy #publichealth #EmergencyResponse #DataForGood Stay safe, everyone.

⛈ #HurricaneBeryl has made landfall in southeastern #Texas as a Category 1 storm. ⚡ Nearly 3 million people are without power and thousands have been evacuating from coastal areas. 📢 New population dynamics analysis from the CrisisReady team for Texas shows that evacuations began for a large number of towns on July 6th and accelerated throughout July 7th. The city of Galveston, TX for instance registered a 17% decline in Facebook user population as of the evening of July 7th. Corpus Christi registered a decline of 5%. Many smaller beach communities including Surfside Beach and South Padre Island recorded rapid declines of 38% to 88%. 👉 At the ACS Place level the Facebook user population correlates extremely well with the general Census population, with an R2 value of .98. New research finds that there are more hurricane-related deaths than traditionally calculated, especially among the poorest & most vulnerable communities. With #ClimateChange intensifying hurricane seasons, it's crucial to reflect on the lessons from past disasters like Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and understand how vulnerable populations are disproportionately affected before, during, and after these events. Bolder climate action is needed to help protect our communities from devastating natural disasters. Read more on hurricane-related deaths & social vulnerability. https://lnkd.in/gaqrrURs

Damages from compounding events—a #hurricane, cold outbreak (WS #Uri), and #pandemic—disproportionately impacted #sociallyvulnerable populations in #Houston, #Texas. FIGURE 26.3. Several areas in Houston (yellow outlines) that were most affected by Hurricane Harvey, the February 2021 cold outbreak (unofficially named “Uri”), and COVID-19 unemployment coincided with census blocks with high scores on the Social Vulnerability Index (#SVI) from the #CDC (darker gray shading). (The SVI measures 16 social factors that describe socioeconomic status, household characteristics, racial and ethnic status, housing type, and transportation access.) For the weather events, zip codes were ranked by number of valid registrants to FEMA’s Individual and Households Program for financial assistance; for COVID-19, zip codes were ranked by percentage of population claiming unemployment insurance due to COVID-19, according to Texas Workforce Commission data from May 2020 to June 2021. The zip codes in the top 25% by those metrics are outlined in yellow. Adapted from Map 5 of Rice University Kinder Institute for Urban Research 2022.46 Source: https://lnkd.in/gFS65gB2
