Extreme heat, defined as more than two days in a row above 90 degrees, can cause health problems for anyone, but it’s especially dangerous for people who are vulnerable already: children and older adults; people with pre-existing conditions and disabilities; people who experience homelessness, work outdoors, are incarcerated, or are low-income. For community health centers, which focus on caring for the country’s most vulnerable, heat-related care, outreach, and education are already integral to the services they provide. It’s not a question of learning the impacts or even developing new solutions, but of carrying on and expanding the work they already do. Across the western United States, a series of summer wildfires have triggered urgent evacuations, cloaked cities in hazardous smoke, and left trails of devastation in their wake. Throughout recent wildfire events, Direct Relief has offered critical support to CalOES, county public health departments, search and rescue teams, and local health centers and clinics near active fires, including the Park Fire in Butte County. The organization maintains an inventory of N95 masks and other essential medications and supplies often requested after wildfires. https://lnkd.in/e4Cmb4qR

Direct Relief stands as a steadfast beacon of hope in the face of global health challenges and the escalating threats posed by climate change. Their unwavering commitment to advancing health equity is evident in their multifaceted approach to disaster preparedness and response, as well as their ongoing support for healthcare providers worldwide. This organization proactively protects vulnerable communities by pre-positioning medical supplies, investing in renewable energy solutions for healthcare facilities, and partnering with organizations like the Footprint Project to rapidly deploy mobile power solutions in disaster-affected communities. According to Jordan Ring Scroggs, Executive Director of MLK Health, “When you get that call in the middle of the night that the busses are coming, and you don’t know how many people are arriving or what condition they’re going to be in, it makes a big difference in response time to be able to immediately transport the packs to the shelter because they are already on-hand, thanks to Direct Relief’s strategic thinking.” SOME PRAISE-WORTHY STATS: 📍 So far this year, Direct Relief has delivered more than ten thousand orders of medications and medical supplies to 1,762 healthcare organizations in 54 U.S. states and territories and seventy-five countries. 📍 Sixty-eight packs are being placed along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts in Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and Saipan. Each pack includes 220 types of medicine and supplies, supporting care for one hundred people for 72 hours. We applaud Direct Relief's unparalleled commitment to disaster preparedness, global health, and health equity. Their work inspires us all and demonstrates the power of human compassion to create a healthier world. #DirectRelief #HealthEquity #DisasterRelief #ClimateAction #MedSupply #GlobalHealth #Healthcare #Volunteer #Donate #Impact #Community #Hope #Philanthropy #CSR #Impact #sharedharvest #howwelead

The audience went silent with anticipation when Deputy Minister of Health Maryna Slobodnichenko spoke about the bravery and courage of Ukrainian doctors. Despite the lack of equipment and funding, these doctors continue to fight for the lives of every Ukrainian, both on the battlefield and in the rear. She shared incredible stories of resilience and reminded everyone of the daily consequences of the russian war in Ukraine. Ukraine House was honored to partner with the Ministry of health of Ukraine and the non-profit organization Direct Relief to host a discussion about the current needs of the health system and the results of russian attacks on medical institutions. This included a focus on the recent brutal attack on Okhmatdyt, a children's hospital with unique expertise in cancer treatment. During the event, Thomas Tighe, President & CEO of Direct Relief, announced an additional aid package of $10 million to strengthen the Ukrainian medical system and address its most urgent needs. On behalf of Ukrainians, we are deeply thankful for such generous support. It's worth noting that Direct Relief has been supplying Ukraine with medications and medical materials worth a total of $1.2 billion since the beginning of the full-scale invasion. Additionally, they have provided financial support to medical organizations in Ukraine totaling $42 million. We are grateful to Ambassador Oksana Markarova for her introduction, in which she emphasized the importance of professional medical care in Ukraine and highlighted the Unbreakable project of Ukraine House, aimed at helping wounded Ukrainian children receive prosthetics. A thank you also goes to Yakov Gradinar, a certified prosthetist and orthotist and CMO at Protez Foundation, who is confident in Ukraine’s bright future, and to Maryana Svirchuk, Executive Director of Lviv Territorial Medical Union, who shared her inspiring experience working at the Unbroken, the National Rehabilitation Center.
