Leaders should never show their emotions...have you heard this before? I have always disagreed with this premise. I believe it's part of the role of a leader to inspire those around them. Leaders should indeed show emotion, as it enhances authenticity, builds trust, fosters connection, and motivates the team. However, it must be done with emotional intelligence and in a manner that maintains professionalism and effectiveness. It must be authentic and align with a leader's values and beliefs, which can build trust and credibility with their team. Passion is one of the emotions I love to see my leaders display. Passion is the underpinning of many other essential leadership qualities. It drives commitment. It inspires others. It fosters innovation, and it builds trust. Fun fact: Did you know it's National Bike to Work Day today? Also a fact: on most days I ride a bike to my office. And kind of like the mail - I ride in all sorts of weather include rain, snow, sun, and clouds. If you live in Denver and like to mountain bike - let’s talk! And maybe ride sometime. One of my proudest moments involved pedaling through a grueling 56-mile ride in 100+ degree heat and humidity in Cozumel as part of a Couch to Half-Ironman challenge I tackled with my sister. Like many of my clients, we were dead set on hitting that finish line. Here’s the thing: setting goals is one thing, but actually achieving them? That's a whole different ball game. Sometimes, we underestimate just how tough that journey can be. The point is this: Goals are hard even for senior leaders. When goals are big, transformational and important, it can seem all the more difficult to achieve them - or even to get started. The key is simplifying the process. As a leader, it's your job to dream big for your team and your organization. After all, there’s a ripple effect to success! When the going gets tough, break it down: ✅Identify the big goal ✅Recognize your supporters ✅Ask for help ✅Be flexible ✅Celebrate each win, no matter how big or small. One of the questions we had for our audience was: "Why did you choose this session?" Before the session began, I approached three attendees and asked that question. The responses were astonishing: • The people in Utah are asking for Suicide Bereavement Support Groups. • I want to learn to Facilitate these support groups. • There have been 4 suicides of coal miners in my community. I want to provide this resource for the bereaved. I shared these responses from the podium as I felt myself leaving my body as a presenter! I did what Works. * Exhaled. * Felt my feet and looked at each of those people. * Whew!! Back in my body and PRESENT as a Presenter again, I modeled for them what the Opening and Introduction aspects of facilitating a group look like, sound like and feel like. It was a joy to have four people approach me the next day sharing what THEY had learned from the presentation!! #socialworkers #presenter #present #whatworks #session #supportgroup #griefsupport #griefandloss #griefcoach
