What are the best ways for software developers to maintain their mental health?
I believe there are many ways for developers to maintain a healthy mental state. Developing is typically a heads down focused role. It is important to come up for air and socialize regularly. Communication and interaction with peers and coworkers can make a huge difference. It's important to have discussions that are non-work related too; keep it fun sometimes! Also, regular and healthy sleep patterns as well as exercise, can help as it's easy to become drowsy over a keyboard all day. Good physical health can be a huge factor toward maintaining strong mental health! Lastly, be realistic! Set attainable goals and deadlines. Allow time for breaks, allow for mistakes and allow for steady learning to keep current. It all helps!

How do you deal with a group member who is hesitant to change?
Guilty! I definitely get set in my ways. My ways currently work, so why change? Change fuels growth! We should strive for growth & development wherever possible. However, there can be many underlying reasons why people don't embrace new things; no time to learn, fear of failure or the unknown, lack of interest, unimportant, not necessary etc. The best way to bring about change is to communicate as much as possible. This helps alleviate the stress of the unknown. The more we know and understand, the higher the comfort level will be. If details are vague, reluctance will escalate. I am also a big believer in 'baby steps'. I apply this to home and well as work. Start small. It's truly amazing how small steps can add up to big changes!

What are the best ways to handle job search rejection?
Don't take it personally. Remember that a rejection may not actually be a rejection! So many things come into play. Maybe the role was filled internally or before you were presented. Maybe you have 90% of the skills sought, not including the one must have. Maybe you were runner up and the selected candidate's salary was a tad lower, or they lived closer. So many things can affect a decision. Rate, Timing, Experience, Skills, Personality, Location, Certifications, Relationships etc. Or it may just be that you are not the best fit for this one. This is ok and may even be a good thing in the end. Apply to all suitable openings and set as many interviews as possible, as your time is coming! Every 'rejection' is a step closer to an offer!
