Today's ad is one that actual stirred up quite a bit controversy 👀 ✨️ Brand: Gillette (Procter & Gamble) Ad Name: "We Believe: The Best Men Can Be" Year: 2019 Agency: Grey Why I love it: Gillette made their position known in a pivotal time in history, setting a clear delineation between themselves and other brands. While they did face a lot controversy - many right-wing publications/pundits pushing for their boycott - it only proved the importance of their message even further. Plus: they successfully turned a simple marketing tag line ("The Best a Man Can Get") into a reminder of their core values and mission. What are your thoughts on the ad? Brand Breakdown: La La Land Kind Cafe 😊 I live in Los Angeles... the pinnacle of trends, brands, and culture. And there are SO many brands here that deserve recognition for how above & beyond they go. This week, I'm walking you through La La Land Kind Cafe, my favorite coffee spot to work from in LA. Here's why they crush: 🙂 Brand Identity The brand is "in the business of kindness." They literally call themselves the 'Kind Cafe' because they envision a world where EVERYONE is kind to each other. Kindness is at the root of everything they do. 🙂 Visual Identity La La Land leans into yellows, creams, and browns to cue happiness. They took the original smiley face and made it THAT much better. 🙂 Merch Strategy I might be bias but... La La Land crushes merch. Every time I bring a new friend in, they go "ugh I need one of these hats." They merch you would actually want to wear. ... it also helps that they keep the merch on a rack next to where you line up to order. Smart. 😂 🙂 Social Strategy La La Land isn't a regular coffee shop on social. Yes, they promote their new drinks. But they also sprinkle in positive affirmations. AND they have a series called "Drive By Kindness" where they shout compliments out of their car to strangers. 🙂 Mission The Kind Cafe puts their money where their mouth is. They hire & mentor foster youth as one of the ways they give back to the community. And their brand strategy is clearly working... La La Land Kind Cafe just opened their 12th location in Plano, TX in March! Brands are making room for Pinterest in their ad budgets according to Modern Retail. New Pinterest CEO Bill Ready (formerly of Google) has made sure that Pinterest has made it as simple and friction free as possible for Pinterest users to buy things they see on the platform’s pin boards. Pinterest is no longer just a platform for window shopping, now you can click on the hotel, cruise package, or new suitcase, can click on it and get redirected to the travel advisor or tour operator's web store. "At Shoptalk last year, Ready pitched Pinterest as an alternative to social media apps like TikTok, which have come under heightened scrutiny about the psychological impact they have on users, especially young people. It’s another way the CEO is trying to convince brands and retailers to advertise their goods on Pinterest." Interesting stuff ... Thank goodness the advertising industry is finally moving away from outdated and stereotypical social grading. Rather than relying on ABC1 classification, brands are now connecting with specialized interests, subcultures, and communities. 📊 This one is for the marketing job seekers. Yesterday, I polled CMOs, Heads of Marketing, and other marketing leaders, asking them what they think of applicants reaching out directly on LinkedIn with a personalized message. Over 330 votes are in, and here's what stood out: 📈 50% Love It - these personalized messages are well-received. 🔑 29% said it depends on the message (i.e. your approach is crucial to whether this helps or hurts you!). 🧐 Only 2% said they straight-up dislike these messages. The vast majority of the respondents were actually marketing leaders. (Though a few CROs, Founders, CEOs, and CTOs also chimed in). As a former leader of a marketing org who now works with a TON of marketing leaders at companies of all sizes, I echo these sentiments. A well-crafted message can make you really stand out, but it's essential to prove your marketing skills through your approach. Treat it like a marketing campaign: ✔️ Read the job description. ✔️ Identify key standout points that are relevant to help sell you for THIS job. ✔️ Understand the persona of who you're messaging, and what they need to hear to want to talk to you. ✔️ Show genuine passion and excitement. ✔️ Proofread meticulously. ✔️ Do NOT send anything generic, canned, or pushy! And when it comes to using AI for this approach, I highly recommend you use your AI skills wisely. Use AI to help you figure out the strategy around the message for the person, like what is the way that you can really catch their attention. Have it help you improve the quality of your writing, proofread/edit, and maybe make your message more concise. But keep the core message authentically you. I would avoid using AI to write the entire message unless you are highly skilled at prompting for something that sounds very human and is genuinely personalized. And if you do, EDIT well so it definitely sounds like YOU. Whatever you do, keep a pushy attitude and a mention of the rapidly evolving marketing landscape out of your message, too. “Thank goodness events are working again,” shared a relieved CMO from a $60m SaaS company. Then other CMOs in the huddle offered variations on this theme. 🐧 The collective relief was palpable. Several important insights emerged. I’ll get to the event-related insights. But there’s a bigger fish to fry first. And that’s the general unease that exists among B2B CMOs right now. The demand gen playbooks that many rely upon have hit a wall. CMOs are grumbling about the costs of once-vaunted ABM tools relative to the value delivered. In reality, macroeconomic factors like higher interest rates have lowered the purchasing tide for most marketing boats. Whether or not you blame the economy or the playbooks, B2B CMOs are in a funk. And that’s a problem too. CMOs, like spiritual leaders, need to project confidence. Given the typical lag time between action and impact, great marketing requires a leap of faith. And before the attribution junkies get out your darts, allow me to explain. 🐧 Great marketers transform businesses. They uncover the insights that drive the ideas that differentiate the brand inside and out. They fix broken go-to-market strategies. They tell the stories that motivate employees and rally customers. They build the tools that make it easier for prospects to justify purchases. They bring focus. And yes, they drive pipeline and revenue. But not without a significant lag time between these actions and their related impact. 🐧 Okay, pep talk over. Back to events. For the relieved SaaS CMO, their events were not trade shows or bespoke dinners. They weren’t even intended to drive net new revenue. Instead, this company held educational seminars at the offices of their largest customers. Like many SaaS providers, they knew their customers weren’t always using their software to its fullest potential. Fixing this would increase customer satisfaction and lower churn. 🐧 But a funny thing happened along the way. Other employees showed up. And, when they felt their peers' excitement, they requested licenses too. Suddenly a retention effort became an acquisition campaign. “These events have become our most effective revenue drivers,” exclaimed the CMO, “which is huge since doing these events is not cheap!” Other CMOs noted that events were similarly working for them. “We’ve been doing roadshows in our top markets,” shared a CMO from a $750m cybersecurity firm. “Most of the attendees are our customers and they do all of the selling to the prospects who join us,” the CMO declared. Part of the story is that work-from-home execs crave in-person contact with peers. But the bigger message is that investments in retention can double as acquisition vehicles. Marketing is rarely a straight line from action to intended impact. But then again, neither are most B2B purchase journeys. You can do no wrong by doing right by your customers. They will sustain you during challenging economic times. In the meantime, keep the faith.

Some things in marketing we spin on far too much: 🤠 Personas - Focus on no more than 3 persona 'buckets' and group people with like interests. Keep it simple and intimately understand the problems you are uniquely positioned to solve for each bucket of interest. 📈 Campaigns - Build your marketing activities around broad based themes (by industry, by product area, by problem). But don't fall down the rabbit hole on this front. Most prospects will touch multiple campaigns. 🎯 Attribution - Attribution leads to silly turf wars that don't serve the business. Measure influence (as well as attribution). If Partnerships or Sales sources the deal, but the contact comes to a Marketing event - everyone gets a check mark. 🎨 Brand vs. demand vs. product marketing - All matter. At all times. Assess the degree to which you want to invest, based on the stage of your company, the competitive landscape, the maturity of the market. NEW BRAND CHAMPIONS CHAPTER CMOs need to be empowered. Not eliminated. Great CMOs have never been more important. People are demanding more from brands. They want brands to help solve their problems, not simply interrupt them with superficial messages. This is happening at the exact same time that data, channels and distractions are hitting the vertical part of the exponential curve. Humans vs. Algorithms. The new culture war. Ugh. It's all a bit too much noise. So here's "music we're feeling." Introducing the Feelr Media Mixtape Organic Spring Mix 2024 Part 1. Put it on while you're working. Your creative IQ will increase 100x. Is there still a space for tastemakers and curators? With origins in the 1980s, a mixtape typically describes a homemade compilation of music onto a cassette tape, CD, or digital playlist. The songs are either ordered sequentially or made into a continuous program by beatmatching the songs and creating seamless transitions at their beginnings and endings with fades or abrupt edits. Essayist Geoffrey O'Brien described this definition of the mixtape as "perhaps the most widely practiced American art form."
