I wrote a piece for Politico on major trends buffeting the media including artificial intelligence, deepfakes, and fighting disinformation in an age of dwindling resources. The conclusion is that founders, CEOs, politicians and others in the public eye now face an exponentially increasing threat of reputational damage. In today’s media landscape, a single negative review can quickly go viral, a poorly phrased statement can trigger a global backlash and an ill-judged joke can wreck careers. While the media world’s pace of change is dizzying, the words written by businessman Warren Buffett almost a decade ago have never been more relevant: “It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it.” Article here: https://lnkd.in/dtTNY4PU

This is a post about what's left on the cutting room floor of LinkedIn. About me: I am primarily a communications professional. I have a decade+ of experience in the field that I hope will propel me into future opportunities to contribute to impactful storytelling. I'm actively looking for my next chance to join an editorial team doing exciting work. Also about me: Due to my spouse's career, I currently live overseas. This meant leaving my last job. It also meant taking on professional opportunities outside of my core profession. Though I've continued to provide freelance editorial services, I have also worked at a school for military-connected children. I'm currently the long-term sub for P.E. at an elementary school. I also work as a certified personal trainer. I worked in a secretary role, as well. I see these as strengths, not sideways steps or career-enders. If anything, my communication skills have improved. My daily interactions with kids and clients hone my ability to effectively convey a lesson or message, with live, in-person, qualitative feedback. It's data, and it's human. This sort of nuance doesn't fit on a LinkedIn profile, where I'm aware a recruiter may only give a cursory glance to my most recent jobs, determining my worthiness for a position. But for me, I want to normalize giving more space (and credence) to these "blank spaces" on resumes. So many of the skills that helped me find success in my early communications career came from unlikely sources. Being part of an improv team helped me think quick on my feet for deadline writing, and helped me react quickly when interviews went in unexpected directions. Doing work as a nonprofit street campaigner helped me understand the nuances of messaging with a call-to-action. Working in public relations positions helped me understand how to work with organizations trying to tell their stories. I specifically got a job at an education nonprofit because I not only had communications experience, but also had worked in schools, knowing the terminology and the "why" behind the mission. I would have been lost if a hiring manager hadn't looked deeper. Many candidates in the resume pile, instead, have similar linear paths. But what would we unearth if we looked deeper? Who would we discover if we valued transferable skills and broad professional backgrounds? Apart from being self-serving, I also truly believe this is a key to organizational success and hiring. There are so many great candidates who get overlooked because of "gaps" or "lack of experience." Some of them just need a chance to explain why, in fact, your organization is exactly where they belong.

Bloomberg News: "In a new partnership with Vote.org, people will be able to register to vote, sign up for election reminders and make a plan for Election Day from within Snapchat. In 2020, the app registered 1.2 million people to vote, making it a prime platform for political advertisers to reach voters. More than 80 million Americans of voting age use Snapchat every month, according to the company. Snap will also prominently feature politically focused content from NBC News, including on-the-ground coverage of key events from conventions to rallies and speeches. In order to help those users make more informative decisions, Snap launched in 2016 its Good Luck America news show, which offers perspective and explanation around key events from both political parties. This year the show will launch a new series called Campus Tour from colleges across the country. Also, Snap’s partnership with NBC News’ “Stay Tuned’ program will present a series that talks with Gen Z voters in local, state and federal elections about issues that resonate with them. Political ads on Snap are vetted through a 'rigorous human review process,' as well as fact-checking with nonpartisan partner Poynter Institute, and a registration and certification process for potential ad buyers. Life often moves at a frenetic pace. The last thing our readers want or need from us is a story that tells only a piece of a jumbled picture. I’ve long been a proponent of enterprise reporting: deeper stories about why things happen the way they do. During a Quad-City Times/Dispatch-Argus newsroom vision meeting last week, I identified different approaches to reporting that may help us better serve readers: 1. A higher percentage of enterprise stories 2. Swarming high-interest stories with follow ups 3.  Providing clarity stories 4. Creating takeaways from dense reporting. Of these four, clarity stories are the least comfortable for many of us in the newsroom. We report each new development in an ongoing issue, so we don’t see the need to retell the larger story from those already-reported parts. There’s a misguided assumption that readers should be up to speed on our previous reporting.  That’s where the “clarity” comes in. Sometimes we need to step back with fresh eyes and tell the whole story in a concise or narrative format, with the result being readers who understand what happened and why.

Does your digital advocacy campaign need a bubble bath? Axios has identified 12 bubbles impacting the 2024 presidential campaign and there are implications for issue advocacy here as well. It's useful to think in "bubbles"- it provides a way of thinking about reaching your audience that's less tactical than thinking channel by channel. How many places can you reach your audience? How can you surround them with your message in their bubble? And be nimble...bubbles burst. And new ones form.

In my latest story with Joe Flint, we write about how media companies are adapting to the aging of their audiences. Attracting viewers ages 18 to 49 and 25 to 54, important age demographics for advertisers, was once among the primary focuses of the biggest media companies in the world. Now that many of those viewers have migrated to streaming and the median ages of networks have gone way up, companies are changing the pitch: What really matters, they say, is whether your ad is reaching people who are likely to buy your product, whether they are 37 or 67. https://lnkd.in/enWt-Py7

When I launched my first website back in 2001 – RealCorporateLawyer – there wasn’t a lot of content and anytime that I added content, I placed a shiny yellow “New!” icon next to that section on the home page. This concept works well for sites that don’t have voluminous levels of content and for which the same visitors come back for more often. That’s why this concept works so well for IR websites. IR websites don’t have a whole lot of content. There’s just enough that an indicator for when something new is added would often be warranted. But not so much that a “New” icon IR website would look out of place. That’s why I was so excited to come across (actually it was one of Labrador’s team members that spotted this as part of their “Transparency Awards” evaluation duties) the latest version of Coca-Cola’s IR website. The toolbar at the top indicates that there’s a new “Overview” section as that link is displayed in a different color (ie. red) than the pre-existing links (ie. black) and there’s a “New” icon sitting on the right of the term. Nifty! By the way, it’s noteworthy that this addition by the Coca-Cola Company does meet one of our transparency criteria for IR website accessibility. #6 of our IR Website Transparency criteria states: “There is a Company Overview or About section clearly identified and accessible from the IR homepage.” #IROs #investorrelations #corpgov https://lnkd.in/eUBnPYig

I recommend this post by Alexandra Smith on "total journalism reach" -- The 19th's new readership metric. It's full of insights and data wisdom. One takeaway: prioritize consistency across platforms without being overly rigid. For example, #Instagram views get counted because their posts basically republish an abridged version of the story -- an increasingly common publishing strategy -- not just because the machine needs more #data. Above all, this model is attentive to the question of *why* we measure #readership. I've always felt that digital interactions are metaphorical -- as summed up in that now quaint adage: "tweets, not endorsements." What does readership *represent*? Answering that question will help you collect quality, consistent data on #news consumption. And that will bring us closer to the readers we serve. https://lnkd.in/gxn4wmYy

Don't let the "It depends" takeaway stop you from looking closely at this American Political Science Review journal article on political ads. Swayable tested 617 ads produced by 51 campaigns and tested with over 500,000 respondents and there are a lot of fascinating insights here on what persuades voters. Today, Edelman Smithfield released the 2024 Edelman’s Trust Barometer Supplemental Report: Insights for Financial Services. The report reveals valuable insights for navigating today’s dynamic markets. Among the findings: 📢 The global public’s trust in the financial services sector has reached its highest level (62%) since the 2008 financial crisis. In Canada, trust scores rose by 5% to 59%. 📢 Banks are the only trusted subsector in Canada (compared to insurance, investment management, fintech and crypto). 📢 Those aged 55+ are the least trusting of financial services companies.   📢 Employees in the financial services sector are the second-most trusting of their employers We’re working on a specific report about the Canadian findings – so stay tuned for more. Let me know if you’re interested in discussing the findings and opportunities for your organization.

New data from YPulse shows the amount of time teens (ages 13-17) spend per week either gaming or watching TV. Not surprisingly, nearly 14 hours per week is spent gaming on either a computer or console.
