📢 Effective flash flood warnings and alerts help save lives and properties and mitigate the impacts of disasters. 💧 That's why the WMO is hosting the Southwest Indian Ocean Region Early Warning System for Floods and Flash Flood Guidance System Workshop in Seychelles from July 2-5, 2024. 🎯 The aim is to enhance the capacity of National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) to issue effective flash flood warnings and alerts. This workshop, in partnership with USAID - Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance, NOAA National Ocean Service, Hydrologic Research Center, and Seychelles Meteorological Authority, brings together experts from: 🇰🇲 Comoros 🇲🇬 Madagascar 🇲🇺 Mauritius 🇸🇨 Seychelles 🌐 This is #EarlyWarningsForAll advancing #ClimateAction, ensuring resilient communities and a better future for all.

As Hurricane Beryl continues its path of devastation through the Caribbean, we are unfortunately reminded of the critical need for robust Early Warning Systems. Investing in these systems and advancing the service delivery capacity of meteorological services is vital for Latin America and the Caribbean. My article, "Bridging Weather Service Gap," explores the WMO's "State of the Climate in Latin America and the Caribbean 2023" report, highlighting the need for enhanced National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs). The CREWS initiative, with UNDRR and the World Bank, is improving early warning systems. The upcoming CREWS Caribbean 2.0 project builds on existing efforts and aligns with WMO's EW4All initiative to ensure life-saving early warnings reach everyone by 2027.

The World Meteorological Organization has a coordination mechanism to provide forecasts and advice to the United Nations and the humanitarian system on extreme weather events. This life-saving work feeds into the #EarlyWarningsForAll initiative. Major Hurricane #Beryl, which is hitting island communities in the #Caribbean, is an example of what motivates us. We are providing official forecasts based on the latest information from NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration National Hurricane Center and national meteorological services in the region. Many thanks to Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology MeteoSwiss, the Deutscher Wetterdienst and GeoSphere Austria for supporting us. https://bit.ly/3Lf48sQ

🎤 Listen to the Grenada Red Cross president, Samantha Dickson, who was on site supporting the team loading the supplies to support the people of Carriacou and Petite Martinique after hurricane Beryl hit the island. 🤝 Realizing #EarlyWarningsForAll requires effective partnerships, and we're proud to partner with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - IFRC , United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), and the International Telecommunication Union. 📹: X @IFRC_es

✈️ Check out this visual of the NOAA Hurricane Hunters flying over the eye of Category 5 Hurricane #Beryl to gather data from the air. This supplements data collected from the oceans and satellites. 🌀 Beryl has weakened to Category 4 as it heads to Jamaica, bringing life-threatening winds and storm surges. 🤝 Monitoring and forecasting hurricanes is a massive team effort. 📰 More on WMO news: https://ow.ly/ZbFu50Sukih

🌪️ Hurricane Beryl becomes a powerful Category 5 storm, marking the earliest occurrence of such an intense storm in recorded history. 🚨 The National Hurricane Center warns: "Category 5 Beryl still intensifying in the southeastern Caribbean... expected to bring life-threatening winds and storm surge to Jamaica later this week." 🛰️ Satellite GOES-16 provided this view, showing Beryl churning in the Caribbean Sea. 🔗 More information: https://lnkd.in/exHzDkWA

🌪️ The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has declared Tropical Cyclone Freddy to be the longest-lasting tropical cyclone on record, at 36 days. 🔗 Full story: https://lnkd.in/epZjff4E

🌪️ Hurricane #Beryl has strengthened to an extremely dangerous Category 4 Hurricane. ⚠️ Life-threatening winds and storm surges are expected to begin in the Windward Islands, according to the US National Hurricane Center. 📈 Never has a tropical cyclone intensified so rapidly so early in the season. Beryl is the strongest Caribbean hurricane this early in the calendar year on record. 🌊 This hurricane season is expected to be extremely active, not least because of very warm ocean temperatures. 🏝️ Small islands are at the frontline of extreme weather and climate change impacts, and they are priorities for many WMO initiatives and #EarlyWarningsForAll. 📸 NOAA Satellite and Information Service 📢 For updates, follow: http://hurricanes.gov/

My thoughts are with the people of the #Caribbean as #Hurricane Beryl approaches the Windward Islands with potentially life-threatening winds and coastal flooding. The US National Hurricane Center, which is the World Meteorological Organization regional centre, has issued Hurricane Warnings for Barbados, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada and Tobago. Never has a tropical cyclone intensified so rapidly to Category 3/4 so early in the season. This season is expected to be extremely active, not least because of very warm ocean temperatures. Small islands are on the frontline of extreme weather and #climatechange impacts and are priorities for many WMO initiatives and for #EarlyWarningsForAll.
