Dedicated to building disaster resilience and tackling climate change through implementation of the Sendai Framework
Info
At the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), we're dedicated to helping countries and communities lower risk and raise resilience in the face of natural and human-induced hazards. Our work is guided by the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, a 15-year agreement adopted by the international community in 2015, which was the first building block of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Today, 12 July, is International Day of Combatting Sand and Dust Storms. 🌪️ Every year, sandstorms throw 2 billion tonnes of dust into the air, much of it from deserts. Human activity and the #ClimateCrisis is creating more dust – from agriculture and land degradation – and more extreme weather. Windborne dust nourishes ocean life and coral reefs but excessive volumes can cause harmful algal blooms and can damage coral health. Sand and dust storms are a global hazard, and reducing the associated risks requires a global effort ➡️ https://ow.ly/stjk50SzFvc #SDSDay

❄ Dzud is a deadly cold-weather disaster in Mongolia that is occurring with greater frequency dues to the #ClimateCrisis. 💡 Discover how FAO is helping save lives and livelihoods through #AnticipatoryAction
Climate change is making extreme winters, known as dzud, more frequent in Mongolia. As a result, grazing areas get covered by thick ice, becoming inaccessible for animals. FAO's Dunja Dujanovic explains how #AnticipatoryAction helps affected herders keep their animals alive.

💡How many hazards in this video do you know? Just because some hazards might be less known, it doesn't mean they aren't deadly and destructive. Understanding hazards can support the development of loss databases and the integration of #DRR into national statistics. 👉 https://ow.ly/pwK650QOX0Z #DisasterData

🌪️In recent weeks Hurricane Beryl tore through the Caribbean, with windspeeds up to 240 km/hr wreaking widespread destruction, and reminding us all of the dangers faced by small island developing states (SIDS). 🌐A new global agreement, the Antigua and Barbuda Agenda for SIDS (ABAS), puts disaster risk reduction at the centre of sustainable development, calling for for strengthened disaster preparedness, including multi-hazard early warning systems. "The world has to step up in supporting the SIDS," said Kamal Kishore, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction, "And it has to be not as an expression of generosity, but as an expression of responsibility." 💡The world must come together now to provide a resilient, sustainable future for island nations. #SIDS4 #EarlyWarningsForAll #HurricaneBeryl

Anticipatory action uses hazard forecast data to trigger early actions. 🌋In Ecuador, the Geophysical Institute and Ecuador Red Cross collaborate to develop triggers for volcanic ashfalls, to initiate early actions that reduce impacts on those most at risk. Local knowledge can help reduce the impacts of future disasters.🌧️ Flooding isn't new for South Africa. In April 2022 KwaZulu-Natal was struck by major floods which took hundreds of lives, and during March and April 2023, seven of South Africa's nine provinces suffered major flood events. Now, the Western Cape is battling severe floods, with poorer communities living in informal settlements bearing the brunt of the devastation. By drawing on local experiences and integrating community knowledge into flood management strategies, authorities could mitigate these impacts. Local insights can pave the way for a safer, drier future. Read the full story ➡️ https://ow.ly/vlX550SyQsR #WesternCapeFloods
