About us
Vaulted is an emerging leader in permanent carbon removal. A biomass carbon removal and storage (BiCRs) solution, Vaulted delivers permanent, high quality carbon removal at scale through the geologic sequestration of carbon-filled organic waste. Vaulted’s approach is designed to be the lowest-cost, gigaton scale, permanent carbon removal. We sequester sludgy organic wastes (biosolids, manure, agricultural, food waste, paper sludge, etc.) that today are sent to a landfill, dumped into an ocean/river, land applied, or otherwise left to decompose, releasing GHGs into the atmosphere. Vaulted leverages a suite of patented, mature, geologic slurry sequestration technologies which allow us to sequester organic waste with minimal processing. We inject deep under the earth’s surface, where the carbon is permanently trapped under a layer of impermeable rock - the same formations that have kept hydrocarbons underground for millions of years. We have two permitted, operational, facilities allowing us to reach near-term meaningful scale. Our carbon removal approach goes beyond vaulting carbon. It inherently improves local environmental and human health. In doing so, our operations redress historically unjust waste management practices and advance environmental justice. Vaulted is backed by leading carbon removal and climate investors, including Lowercarbon Capital, Earthshot Ventures, and WovenEarth Ventures.

Vaulted's selection as 1 of 25 semi-finalists enables us to compete to become a top 10 finalist and sell CDR directly to the US Government. The DOE selected semi-finalists based on the rigor of CDR approach (things like technological readiness, cost effectiveness, scalability, and durability) and potential for delivering substantial co-benefits (such as creating high-skill jobs and advancing environmental justice). A big headline in the climate world today is “carbon removal supplier Vaulted secures $58.3M in purchases from Frontier buyers, including Shopify.” We’re very excited about this, but there’s also a backstory that needs to be told. Vaulted Deep didn’t just magically become offtake ready. Just one year ago, their future was uncertain. Without earlier purchases, before carbon removal operations were established, before they were headline-ready, they may have canceled their plans. Instead, we’re staring at a solution that in theory has the potential to reach 300 million tonnes of carbon removal in the US annually—that’s 3-5% of the world’s carbon removal needs. 🤯 How do we make sure more of this happens? That suppliers with massive potential don’t fail simply because they can’t get the resources they need to prove their technology? Shopify’s early involvement is a blueprint for carbon removal buyers to make sure promising suppliers like Vaulted make it to this stage. I wrote more about this process here:

Today's a big day at Vaulted Deep - we're thrilled to announce a groundbreaking $58.3M deal with Frontier Climate to remove 152,480 tons of CO2 from the atmosphere, helping pave the way for our carbon removal industry to grow and drive meaningful impact in addressing the climate crisis. It might seem like a quick (91x!) scale up from our Frontier pre-purchase just 8 months ago, but that's because the core of Vaulted is technology that has been decades in the making. Our unique geologic slurry injection, developed in the oilfield space, deploys a legacy mature technology to remove carbon from the atmosphere. That means we can focus on near-term scale of CDR that is permanent, safe, high-quality and regulated. We’re all about tons underground in the near term - getting to meaningful scale ASAP: “The amount Vaulted aims to remove is equal to roughly 40 percent of the annual emissions from a single U.S. gas-fired power plant.” (Canary Media) With Frontier’s largest offtake to-date, we are delivering high quality CDR at hyper-speed (2k+ tons in our first 4 months of operation) and puts us on track to deliver 30k tons of CDR over the coming year.
