Congratulations to Vassilis Kitidis and the PML team on the successful conclusion of this study! Planetary's pre-trial modelling work, with Port and Coastal Solutions, Coastal Science Ltd, and Deltares suggested that the chemical signal from alkalinity addition would be undetectable due to the high tidal flows and extremely rapid dilution. Detecting the OAE signal, albeit just a few meters from the outfall, is a testament to PML's precision monitoring and data analysis. https://lnkd.in/djkQJeNN

“This new research opportunity is another important step forward in our effort to assess the viability and desirability of ocean alkalinity enhancement, a high-potential carbon dioxide removal approach that could be a necessary complement to dramatic emissions reductions. We are excited to partner with COVE and researchers from the Dalhousie University contingent of the Ocean Alk-Align consortium to bring this opportunity to Halifax.” That quote is from our Executive Director, Antonius Gagern, regarding today’s exciting announcement about a new Joint Learning Opportunity. The Joint Learning Opportunity will advance research and development that supports monitoring, reporting, and verification -- as part of ongoing field research trials taking place in Halifax, Canada. You've reduced your personal emissions as much as possible, what's next? Donating to Terraset allows you to directly draw carbon out of the air. Usually carbon credits get purchased to "offset" an emission - you take a flight, and want to ensure that you don't make climate change worse, so you pay for an equivalent amount of carbon to be removed to "net" it out. But we know now that keeping things steady is not going to be enough, we need to also pull down some of the carbon that's already been emitted. Terraset is one of the few organizations enabling that. When you make a donation, they buy permanent carbon removal. But they don't match that to an emission, so the result is just less carbon in the atmosphere. Usually going negative is a bad thing. But when it comes to the climate, we need to go as negative as we possibly can.

We just made our first carbon removal purchase from Canada via Planetary. 🇨🇦 So it felt fitting to have a guest post from Na'im Merchant—Terraset Carbon Council member and Executive Director of Carbon Removal Canada—on the Canadian CDR sector. We’ve had AMAZING support from donors and enthusiasts in Canada since our early days, so we’re excited about this, and we know it’s definitely just the beginning for our partnership with our neighbors up North! How do you solve something that is nobody’s problem? Climate change is an existential threat to our way of life. And people, companies and governments are starting to take real action to reduce their emissions. While nothing is moving fast enough, progress is being made which should give us hope. Taking ownership of emissions is the critical first step in reducing the impacts of climate change. But what about the emissions that nobody owns? Stopping emissions is critical, but there’s already far too much CO2 in our atmosphere. The IPCC has been clear - tremendous amounts of CO2 needs to be permanently removed from the air to meet climate goals. And that removal can’t be to compensate for an emission that someone owns, it needs to take the stuff that’s already there out. The XPRIZE is a critical incentive program in a world that has not yet figured out how to pay for the climate cleanup. This will be a key way to ensure that these solutions will be available when they’re needed. Planetary is honored to be part of the XPRIZE top 100 teams and to be doing our part. Because when a problem gets to be so big that it’s everyone’s problem, it’s hard to make it anyone’s problem.

If we genuinely want to address the climate crisis, we need to take an expansive, inclusive perspective. The scale of the challenge demands nothing less.

📣 Calling for tech-openness in the CRCF    📅 Tomorrow, European negotiators will be meeting for the next #Trilogue of the Carbon Removal Certification Framework (#CRCF) - potentially the most important piece of carbon dioxide removal (#CDR) legislation in the world right now.   💡 Only an approach open to all CDR technologies will enable Europe to achieve its #netzero target.   ❗ At present, there are positions held by numerous negotiators that would de facto exclude a large amount of promising CDR approaches. 📢For this reason, we need to make our voices heard - louder than ever.    🙌 An astounding 350 companies - including ours - have signed a public letter calling for tech-openness in the CRCF, including the specific changes we need. The signatories span the entire CDR industry (and beyond), from startups to large multinationals. 🤝 Action now can have an outsized impact. Help us spread the word and make sure that negotiators are crystal clear on the position of the CDR industry.   🖇 Link to the letter: https://lnkd.in/gTFn2zdA

Our CEO Mike Kelland sat down with The Jordan Harbinger Show to talk about a framework for climate hope.

    Hotly Pursuing Climate Solutions

Reducing our emissions is necessary but not sufficient. We often hear people say “we have to focus on reducing emissions before we think about removals”. That was very true 30 years ago. I wish it was true today. But it’s not, we no longer have the luxury. The common refrain at #cop28 was “everything, everywhere all at once”. We have to reduce our emissions with urgency and focus, AND, we have to scale up carbon removals with the same urgency and focus. That means targeting the highest scale potential solutions, like Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement, and responsibly doing the work to understand their safety at ever increasing scale. As a result, the timing of this conversation with Jordan Harbinger couldn’t be better. We talk about the scale of the problem, the almost impossible challenge of carbon removals, why the ocean has the biggest potential of any solution and how we’re making progress on responsibly scaling out our solution. We focus on hope and substantial action, and what we need to do individually and collectively to limit the harms of climate change. Take a listen: https://lnkd.in/eSusQqjv

Looking for a great article with a balanced and hopeful take on a potential approach to help address climate change? Thank you to Warren Cornwall for an interesting, unbiased report on research happening with Dalhousie University, especially Dariia Atamanchuk, Katja Fennel, Hugh MacIntyre, Tatjana Zivkovic and others. Thanks also to Mike Kelland and William Burt for leading the efforts from the Planetary side, and to Carbon to Sea Initiative for their great support. What a great way to kick off #cop28 ! We really need to reduce emissions as quickly as possible, but it looks like ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) can be helpful to counteract those emissions that are impossible to halt. https://lnkd.in/gr2Dn-HE
