Infectious disease specialist Leila Hojat, MD, arrived at UH Cleveland Medical Center in September 2019 to lead the hospital’s antibiotic stewardship program. Advocating for the wise use of antibiotics has long been her passion. Her goal, she says, is to help clinicians make sense of the burgeoning number of antibiotic clinical trials and guide them in making good prescribing decisions for their patients -- decisions that won’t promote antibiotic resistance. But something happened just a few short months into implementing this vision: COVID-19 descended, which required the immediate involvement and expertise of every infectious disease specialist in the country. Now that the worst of the pandemic is behind us, Dr. Hojat and her antibiotic stewardship team have received an important accolade: Under her guidance, University Hospitals has earned the prestigious Infectious Diseases Society of America Antimicrobial Stewardship Centers of Excellence designation. Michelle S., Registered Nurse Level I, UH Elyria Medical Center, had a mentor early in her career named Marsha. “Non-judgmental, light-hearted, and very knowledgeable,” Marsha helped Michelle learn by doing. Today, Michelle aims to do the same for new grad RNs. “I feel it is important for nurses to mentor other nurses because it reminds us of where we all started,” Michelle says. “The most rewarding part of mentoring is knowing I helped mold a person into an excellent nurse, and that I made a difference not only in their lives but the lives of their patients. I love watching someone blossom into a nurse who is able to assess all the information they collect, make sound decisions, and look ‘outside the box’ when needed. I believe that everything you teach, from kindness and compassion to critical thinking skills and excellence in nursing, make an impact on people's lives.” At UH, we uphold our team to the highest standards of excellence. Together, through mentorship and our supportive environment, we meet and surpass those expectations. Ear, nose and throat specialist Marc Guay, MD, has been around hospitals nearly his entire life, tagging along with his orthopaedic surgeon father for hospital rounds starting at age 5. Fifty-five years later, the fascination continues. “I loved it then, and I love it now,” Dr. Guay says. “I’m blessed to do what I do and enjoy it. It’s been in my bones for a long time.” Dr. Guay has been affiliated with UH St. John and UH Elyria medical centers for the past 23 years, and as a fully employed physician with UH for the last nine. He assumed the role of President of the Medical Staff at UH Elyria in 2020 for a two-year term and immediately communicated his enthusiasm for what hospitals can be. “I’ve never wanted us to just be a good hospital,” he says. “I want us to be the best hospital. You keep talking like that, and people say, ‘I want to be the best hospital, too.’ In the end, that motivates people to drive the bus in the right direction. You pull them a little bit, and they do the rest.” This commitment to quality and communication has paid off at UH Elyria. “During Marc’s two-year tenure as President of the Medical Staff, he was instrumental in improving the quality of care throughout the hospital by collaborating with the medical staff and the administration,” says Todd Harford, MBA, MSN, RN, Chief Operating Officer of UH Elyria Medical Center. “During his tenure, we have seen dramatic improvements, such as in length of stay and overall employee/physician satisfaction. Dr. Guay has that internal drive to be the best he can be for his patients and he is always willing to go that extra mile when needed. He doesn’t know how to say no. No matter when you need him, he is always there to help.” Read more about Dr. Guay at https://lnkd.in/e7RDCd-M #ENT #healthcarequality #healthcareleadership #physicianexcellence #patientsfirst

Miriam is one of our amazing RNs at UH Conneaut Medical Center, and we’re so happy to have her as part of our team! Miriam started her journey with UH when a friend and former coworker got a job at UH Conneaut Medical Center’s Special Procedures Unit. “Her descriptions made me very happy for her … but very jealous for me!” Miriam recalled. About a month later, that same friend let Miriam know about an opening in the Special Procedures Unit, and she leaped at the chance to take the job. “The Special Procedures Unit at UH Conneaut Medical Center proved to be super interesting because we support many different specialties, services, and patients,” Miriam explained. “Furthermore, the entire hospital staff is friendly and close.” Over the years, Miriam practiced nursing skills to support GI procedures, surgery, stress testing, wound care, pain management, telemedicine, and other outpatient services. “To this day, I enjoy serving patients in the UH Seidman Cancer Infusion Center. The experiences, relationships, education, and skills I’ve gained would be difficult to duplicate anywhere else!” Miriam encourages others to consider a career at University Hospitals. “UH encourages employees to speak up, serve on committees, lead in our units, volunteer, and more. There are so many opportunities to get involved.” Miriam also pointed out that UH is competitive when it comes to compensation, tuition reimbursement, and promotion. “During my time at UH Conneaut Medical Center, I earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing and attained a certification, and financial support from UH made both possible.” For Miriam, everything comes back to her love of nursing. “I’ve wanted to be a nurse since the ninth grade, and I’ve never changed my mind. I feel most accomplished when someone feels better because of my actions, behavior, or skill. It may be a patient, a patient’s family, or a coworker. Making someone else’s life a little better can be so simple and so impactful.” If you share Miriam’s passion for nursing, bring your career to UH! https://lnkd.in/eTtSzQPK #UHNursing #UHCareers #UHProud

Deborah Walsh, RN, University Hospitals Home Care Services, was named one of four finalists this year for The Ohio Hospital Association Albert E. Dyckes Health Care Worker of the Year award. OHA received 72 nominations for the award, which is presented each year to one Ohio caregiver who personifies a leader, motivates colleagues, influences others, provides valuable service and contributes, personifies the mission, vision and values of the organization, and has an impact in their community. Deborah has been a registered nurse with UH Home Care Services for 28 years. She also serves as a teacher, mentor and leader. As a nurse, she covers the East Market and its rural areas, including the Amish population. Deborah has had to educate herself well on their beliefs, practices, decision-making processes and values regarding healthcare, which are different among the Amish. Her support and understanding have made a huge difference in their lives. Deborah also shows enthusiasm for being a teacher and mentor by creating an environment of learning while also challenging students to understand the role they will play in the future of health care. When Tasveer Khawaja, MD, began his internal medicine residency at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center in 2020, he sought a brisk pace and a diverse experience from this academic medical center. He wanted to work with leaders in his field and see everything possible to chart his path in medicine. UH was beyond all he could have imagined. “I was looking for a place that was the right balance between academic rigor, positive culture and collegiality,” said Dr. Khawaja, one of five chief residents for the Department of Medicine’s 148 residents. “You’d be hard-pressed to find a place that highlights those two aspects better than Case Western Reserve University and University Hospitals do.” UH Cleveland Medical Center trains more than 1,000 residents, making it one of the largest training hospitals in the country. Programs range from neurosurgery, ophthalmology, radiation oncology and otolaryngology to urology, OB/GYN, pathology and genetics. Besides medicine, among the largest programs are general surgery and anesthesiology, emergency medicine, neurology, pediatrics, orthopedic surgery, psychiatry and diagnostic radiology.
