Yesterday, we launched #SportsLand at Cleveland Browns Stadium, a groundbreaking event bringing together leaders in technology, healthcare, sports, and human performance. Our mission is clear: to establish Ohio as a premier destination for sports technology and innovation. SportsLand is built on two pillars of Ohio’s excellence: world-class healthcare and a rich sports legacy. By merging these strengths, we aim to position Ohio at the forefront of sports science, human performance, and healthtech innovation. We featured an impressive lineup of leaders who showcased their cutting-edge work and expertise. The event also included a live stream conversation with the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA)’s Performance Summit in Spain, highlighting the global connections we’re fostering. We are grateful for the unwavering support and collaboration across Ohio yesterday. Alongside our amazing team at Drusinsky Sports Medicine Institute, the UH Haslam Sports Innovation Center, and OhioX, we can say with full confidence: this is just the beginning. UH Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer David Sylvan, who is also President of UH Ventures, recently sat down with Kate Gamble, Managing Editor at healthsystemCIO, to talk about removing barriers to patient access and doing it largely through technology. David addresses the three core pillars his team is focused on: patient access/experience, transitioning to value-based care, and right-sizing through optimization. During the conversation, David shared his insights on what it takes to foster innovation; why he must be “joined at the hip” with UH’s CIO; the approach he utilized to become immersed in healthcare; and why outside experience is so important. Get to know our team! Today we are featuring Lucas Greenberg our summer intern from Case Western Reserve University! What do you do at UH Ventures in one sentence? - I've been interning with Matthew Zenker and the new UH Haslam Sports Innovation Center with their incoming deal flow. I research, analyze, and compile a variety of data and information to assess sports-medicine and health companies/markets to help accelerate and invest in them. I'm also working on the upcoming SportsLand event with Patricia Colella, MBA, by helping out in all areas of event management. What are your favorite things to do outside of school? - I love to exercise and try new workouts, but more importantly, I love to eat. During COVID, I began cooking and baking as a way to unwind; I try to make a meal four times a week. My favorite dish to make is my grandfather’s shrimp and pea risotto. Favorite binge-worthy TV show? - The Office. I have seen The Office over five times and I can quote certain scenes by heart! What is your favorite restaurant in Cleveland? - Batuqui; a fun Brazilian summer dinner spot. What do you love about Cleveland? - I was born and raised all around Cleveland, and throughout my time, there has been one constant: the people. Everyone from Cleveland has a unique and inspiring story, and I love meeting people from around the world. #Internship #HealthTech #Innovation #EventManagement #Innovation #CareerDevelopment #ProfessionalGrowth #Cleveland

"It's being relentlessly inquisitive and not making any presumptions or assumptions. It's surrounding yourself with people who have deep domain expertise and then candidly enabling them to do what they do, providing lead blocking for them, and getting out of the way," said David Sylvan during his interview with Kate Gamble on on how he made the transition to healthcare, how University Hospitals Ventures identifies top innovations & University Hospitals' integration strategy. "The Cleveland Innovation District platform gives the anchoring institutions an opportunity to be both bold and vulnerable with regard to innovation work in the region. We are challenging ourselves to admit where there might be capabilities gaps in our respective institutions—we can’t all be good at the same thing. This complementary model gives us a way to present ourselves as a unified entity that makes it attractive to do business in Northeast Ohio as well as live here." - Kipum Lee, PhD, Vice President of Innovation & Product Strategy In this episode on the Becker's Healthcare Podcast, Kipum Lee, PhD, Brian Kovach Vice President, Cancer Institute, The MetroHealth System (Cleveland, OH), & Joseph Rich, Senior Director, Cleveland Clinic Innovations, all share insights into the focus and future of The Cleveland Innovation District from their perspective roles.
