Yesterday, we launched #SportsLand at Cleveland Browns Stadium, a groundbreaking event bringing together leaders in technology, healthcare, sports, and human performance. Our mission is clear: to establish Ohio as a premier destination for sports technology and innovation. SportsLand is built on two pillars of Ohio’s excellence: world-class healthcare and a rich sports legacy. By merging these strengths, we aim to position Ohio at the forefront of sports science, human performance, and healthtech innovation. We featured an impressive lineup of leaders who showcased their cutting-edge work and expertise. The event also included a live stream conversation with the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA)’s Performance Summit in Spain, highlighting the global connections we’re fostering. We are grateful for the unwavering support and collaboration across Ohio yesterday. UH Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer David Sylvan, who is also President of UH Ventures, recently sat down with Kate Gamble, Managing Editor at healthsystemCIO, to talk about removing barriers to patient access and doing it largely through technology. David addresses the three core pillars his team is focused on: patient access/experience, transitioning to value-based care, and right-sizing through optimization. During the conversation, David shared his insights on what it takes to foster innovation; why he must be “joined at the hip” with UH’s CIO; the approach he utilized to become immersed in healthcare; and why outside experience is so important. The collaboration, which kicked off during the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) annual meeting in Denver, was spearheaded by NFL Physicians Society (NFLPS) President James Voos, MD, who is the Head Team Physician for the Cleveland Browns and Chairman, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at University Hospitals. Physicians Society Presidents for the NFL, MLB, NBA, MLS and NHL committed to meet bi-annually to advance health and safety initiatives, foster interest in sports medicine careers, boost collaborative research and to support sports medicine physicians' ability to care for athletes. What do you do at UH Ventures in one sentence? - I've been interning with Matthew Zenker and the new UH Haslam Sports Innovation Center with their incoming deal flow. I research, analyze, and compile a variety of data and information to assess sports-medicine and health companies/markets to help accelerate and invest in them. I'm also working on the upcoming SportsLand event with Patricia Colella, MBA, by helping out in all areas of event management. What are your favorite things to do outside of school? - I love to exercise and try new workouts, but more importantly, I love to eat. During COVID, I began cooking and baking as a way to unwind; I try to make a meal four times a week. My favorite dish to make is my grandfather’s shrimp and pea risotto. Favorite binge-worthy TV show? - The Office. I have seen The Office over five times and I can quote certain scenes by heart! What is your favorite restaurant in Cleveland? - Batuqui; a fun Brazilian summer dinner spot. What do you love about Cleveland? - I was born and raised all around Cleveland, and throughout my time, there has been one constant: the people.
