HCA Healthcare’s department of Care Transformation and Innovation (CT&I) works to improve healthcare delivery through the clinically led integration of technology into care. The CT&I team works directly with clinicians to identify opportunities and innovative ideas while testing, measuring and sharing solutions across the enterprise. Today, we’re continuing our “Meet the Innovators” blog series, profiling the leaders and frontline change agents working in and with HCA Healthcare’s CT&I team. Jessica Woods BSN, RN, C-EFM, serves as a labor and delivery manager at TriStar Hendersonville Medical Center. As a CT&I Innovation Hub, the Hendersonville, Tennessee hospital is at the forefront of efforts to improve healthcare technology and provides a living environment for care process design and testing. Jessica is working alongside the CT&I team by leveraging technology to test solutions to support labor and delivery clinicians in their quest to improve maternal safety. “The beautiful part of innovative work is that it’s challenging and uncomfortable but rewarding at the same time,” said Jessica. “Innovation may change programs and processes you’ve always known, but it is about making our work better, faster and more intuitive, allowing us more time with patients and families to positively impact their lives and leave them better than we found them.” On “HCA Healthcare Today,” learn how Jessica is shaping maternal care solutions of the future: https://bit.ly/4eJypO1 #HCANursing #CareTransformation

Today, HCA Healthcare’s South Atlantic Division proudly announced that we will give $650,000 to Savannah State University (SSU) to support a paid internship program for students pursuing a master’s degree in social work. This gift is part of HCA Healthcare’s larger commitment to give $10 million over three years to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs). Founded in 1890, SSU is the first public HBCU in Georgia and the first higher education institution in Savannah, Georgia. Funds from this gift will go towards paid internships for two Master of Social Work cohorts over four years that will help students complete the required 900 clinical hours needed for their degree at HCA Healthcare affiliate hospital Memorial Health. Through the cohort, students can access job shadowing opportunities and mentors throughout HCA Healthcare. “We’re proud to be partnering with SSU to offer opportunities for students to find fulfilling careers in healthcare and social work,” said Sherri Neal, chief diversity officer of HCA Healthcare. “Memorial Health University Medical Center has developed a strong relationship with the university and we look forward to seeing the positive impact this program will have on the community.” On “HCA Healthcare Today,” learn more about how we are investing in and supporting future leaders in Georgia and across the country ➡️ https://bit.ly/3zr0DwN. #UnlockPossibilities #PositiveImpact

Compassion is a critical part of patient care. A smile, a kind word, a listening ear, genuine acts of caring – all have the power to make a difference in the lives of our patients. In February, caregivers at HCA Healthcare’s UCF Lake Nona Hospital demonstrated a powerful act of compassion. After experiencing abdominal pain in February, Martha Ines Perez Bermudez sought emergency care at the Orlando, Florida hospital. Following a series of tests, Martha was diagnosed with clear cell carcinoma (CCC) of the endometrium, a rare and aggressive form of endometrial cancer. Gynecologic oncologist Dr. Maria Ruiz performed a hysterectomy to remove as much of Martha’s tumor as possible. While her surgery was successful, her cancer didn’t respond to treatment, and this spring, she began palliative care. In a recent return to the Orlando, Florida hospital for worsening symptoms, Martha learned that the cancer had rapidly progressed, and hospice care was recommended. In the following days, Martha shared with her care team, “I just want to go to the beach.” Lissette Francis, a case manager at UCF Lake Nona Hospital, wanted to help make Martha’s dream a reality and coordinated a plan with the NATIONAL HEALTH TRANSPORT, INC.. Martha’s transport was arranged, and two local EMS crew members volunteered to take Martha to the beach on their day off. In collaboration with Canaveral Fire Rescue, they arranged an ATV buggy to accommodate Martha and bring her to the beach to walk on the sandy shore. As Martha was prepared to be discharged home from the hospital the following day, Lissette shared the wonderful surprise. Later, Lissette said being able to make Martha’s final wish come true is what her job is all about. “This is what it means to care like family and something I will never forget,” she said. When asked about this experience, Dr. Ruiz said, “It’s why I do what I do—to make our patients’ reality as beautiful as possible.” Thank you to our HCA Florida Healthcare colleagues and EMS partners for providing our patients with physical, emotional and spiritual support – and treating them with the dignity and respect they deserve. #CareLikeFamily

HCA Healthcare has a strong and longstanding connection to the U.S. armed forces, military veterans and their families. Over the past 12 years, our organization has hired more than 60,000 veterans, active-duty and reserve personnel and military spouses. In addition, HCA Healthcare is proud to be one of the first organizations to partner with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation to help lead the Hiring 100,000 Military Spouses campaign in 2019. The 2019 campaign was a three-year call to action for U.S. organizations of all sizes to make a collective commitment to hire 100,000 military spouses. Through the campaign, more than 7,000 military spouses have joined HCA Healthcare. Brooke Stoesz, quality coordinator at HCA Healthcare’s Swedish Medical Center, is the proud wife of a United States Army service member. While her husband was recently activated for a three-month training away from home, Brooke shared her gratitude for the support of HCA Healthcare Military Affairs and the Swedish Medical Center leadership team. Brooke's supervisors collaborated with her on her schedule to ensure that she could care for her school-aged son during her husband's deployment. “As a working military spouse and mother, it can be challenging to balance it all,” Brooke shared. “When the Army calls, as a family we must answer. Although this was a time of challenge, it was also a time of growth and learning for me. I had to learn to ask for help when I needed it, and will be forever grateful to those who helped me successfully navigate my husband’s time away.” At HCA Healthcare, we are proud to show up for each military spouse as they serve our patients while their spouses selflessly serve our nation. Today is #Juneteenth, a celebration and reminder of the official end of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth was declared a federal holiday in 2021 to reflect on the history of slavery in the U.S., rejoice in the progress our country has made and to advocate for continued meaningful change. At HCA Healthcare, we remain committed to creating healthier, more equitable tomorrows for our patients, colleagues and communities. #HealthierTomorrows

HCA Healthcare colleague Richard Grissom discovered his calling to become a nurse after he experienced Mission Health nurses providing compassionate care to his wife while giving birth to their son. Richard, a diesel mechanic at the time, revived his childhood dream and chose to pursue nursing as a second career. Nearly nine years later, Richard is now providing expert care as a registered nurse in Mission Hospital’s medical intensive care unit (MICU). During nursing school, Richard completed three clinical rotations in the Asheville, North Carolina hospital’s MICU and joined the team following graduation. He chose to serve on this unit because of the highly skilled team and the specialized care they provide to patients. "I really feel like being on the frontline of getting that patient better, and the hand I'm able to put in helping that patient get better – it feels like it's right where I need to be," Richard shared. HCA Healthcare’s more than 99,000 dedicated nurses, like Richard, are the difference-makers for our patients and care teams. This Father’s Day weekend, one HCA Healthcare patient and nurse-dad is sharing his health journey to encourage other men to adopt a heart-healthy lifestyle. Days before his daughter’s wedding, Mike Griffin began to experience chest and arm pain. He was admitted at HCA Healthcare affiliate St. David's HealthCare’s Heart Hospital of Austin where our care teams identified that Mike was having a heart attack and sprang into action to save his life. Recognized among the top cardiovascular facilities in the nation by Healthgrades, the Heart Hospital of Austin specializes in diagnosing and treating cardiovascular disease, a condition that more than 60% of U.S. adults will be at risk of developing over the next 25 years, according to the American Heart Association. To treat blockage and restore blood flow to Mike’s heart, clinicians at the Heart Hospital of Austin treated his condition with a heart stent. During Mike’s hospital stay, one nurse was by his side every step of the way, his daughter, Jenna Sole. Jenna has been a nurse at the Heart Hospital of Austin for nearly four years, encouraging both patients and family members to prioritize their heart health. Three days after being released from the hospital, Mike proudly walked Jenna down the aisle on her wedding day and today continues to make positive strides in his recovery. In honor of Father’s Day, Mike offers advice to other dads: “The biggest thing I could say is love your family and, take care of your health. So you’re around for them.” Learn more about the expert cardiovascular care Mike received from his daughter and her colleagues at the Heart Hospital of Austin: https://bit.ly/4clsZXD #FathersDay #MensHealthMonth #HCAHeart
