Our human family is growing. The world’s population is projected to peak in the mid-2080s, increasing from 8.2 billion people in 2024 to approximately 10.3 billion before it begins to decline. A new report from the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs also highlights that by the late 2070s people aged 65 and older will outnumber children. Thursday is the first-ever International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Genocide in Srebrenica. The Srebrenica massacre marked one of the darkest chapters of the war that followed the breakup of the former Yugoslavia. Over 8,000 lives were lost, thousands of people were displaced and families and communities were devastated. “May the memory of Srebrenica strengthen our resolve to build a world free from the scourge of genocide —a world where justice and peace prevail, where ‘never again’ is a solemn promise fulfilled for all humanity,” said UN Secretary-General António Guterres. https://lnkd.in/eQdYwhqQ

For humanity to progress, everyone must be counted, no matter where they are or who they are. Yet, for millions —the world’s most vulnerable among them— this right continues to go unrealized. On Thursday’s World Population Day, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) explains why inclusive data-collection processes are more important than ever, ensuring that everyone is counted in all their diversity. https://lnkd.in/e7v74zWH

"War is the worst enemy of human rights. It is an aberration, not just in the current context, but also everywhere else." – United Nations Human Rights chief Volker Türk briefing the UN Human Rights Council on the war in Ukraine on Tuesday. His remarks came the day after a wave of Russian attacks in the country. Dozens of civilians were killed and critical infrastructure damaged as a result of the strikes. “The pursuit of war – the practice of escalation - cannot become the new normal.” https://lnkd.in/e2GjBtx9
