Helpful to understand the flows of Human Trafficking in Mexico.
#BorderTrafficking | Some of the hotspots for human trafficking in Mexico are located in major cities on the country’s northern border with the United States. At times, the spaces in which victims are exploited intersect with migrant smuggling routes. The two crimes are distinct, but vulnerable migrants can be forced to work for organized crime groups or sexually exploited by human smuggling networks. https://bit.ly/3OTkCbD

Earlier this month, news of the kidnapping and illegal detention of Moroccans by human trafficking networks in Southeast Asia caused alarm among Moroccans, with many taking to social media to express their solidarity with the affected families and vent their outrage. The case of these trapped and abused Moroccans is not spun from the threads of Hollywood fantasy; instead, it is grounded in the lived experiences of helpless and deceived migrant workers as they grapple with the harsh realities of life where human trafficking and mafia meet. The tragic case of the kidnapping and illegal detention of foreign nationals, including Moroccan tourists and migrant workers, is essentially a sad story of people tricked into leaving their countries with the promise of better financial and employment prospects, according to media reports and official statements by the concerned authorities in the Southeast Asian borders where these trafficking networks operate. Currently, Dutch courts are making slow but steady progress in the trials of Eritrean human traffickers accused of holding migrant families for ransom. Despite delays due to extradition issues, the cases against notorious traffickers Zekarias Habtemariam Kidane and Tewelde Goitom (a.k.a. Amanuel Welid) for involvement in human smuggling, hostage-taking, extortion, and sexual violence are moving forward. Victims, mostly Eritrean migrants who traveled to the Netherlands, faced abuse, torture, and even death in Libyan camps unless their families paid large sums. However, joint international cooperation has been key in tackling these migrant crimes. Today, Oxford’s Border Criminologies, Mobile Info Team and the Border Violence Monitoring Network are launching a brand new, open-source interactive database. Detention Landscapes pools evidence from testimonies, open-source research, incident reports, and visual material to unveil the systemic nature of abuse in the facilities used to accommodate and return refugees, migrants and asylum seekers in Greece. Professor Mary Bosworth, from the University of Oxford, says the database aims to “bring to light the conditions and abuses happening within secretive detention sites - ultimately so that perpetrators and governments can be held to account.” Find the database here: https://lnkd.in/ecvVgpha
