Supporting Colorado's Electric Cooperatives

About us

The Colorado Rural Electric Association is the trade association representing Colorado's electric cooperatives. More than 1.25 million Coloradans depend on a cooperative for their electricity. Serving 70 percent of the land in Colorado, cooperatives reach every county but one. While commercial, industrial and agricultural businesses across the state rely on electric co-ops, 85 percent of co-op customers are residential. Colorado's co-ops serve a broad array of communities—from high country ski resorts to irrigated farmland on the eastern plains, from co-ops that serve two customers per mile of line to others that serve 18 customers per mile of line. On average, Colorado's co-ops typically serve 7.8 customers per mile. Compare that to investor-owned utilities that average 35 customers per mile of line and municipal utilities that serve 46 customers per mile of line. Co-ops are unique in that they are not for profit and owned by the members they serve. For more information go to CREA's website at www.crea.coop.

  • Since April 7, 42 utility companies and over 250 electric #lineworkers from 16 states have worked tirelessly to bring light to residents living on the Navajo Nation. Last week, the lights turned on for the very first time for seven families. An initiative of the Navajo Tribal Utility Authority - NTUA in coordination with the American Public Power Association (APPA), Light Up Navajo V is a #philanthropic electrification project that is dedicated to bringing #electricity to families living on the Navajo Nation. Crews and residents celebrated the completion of the recently #powered homes with much gratitude and a celebratory dinner. Thank you to all who contributed to this effort.

  • Congratulations to CREA member co-op Poudre Valley REA — the Fort Collins-based cooperative received $9 million from USDA to develop solar energy battery storage. The award was announced at the cooperative’s headquarters on Monday, June 17. “There is an attitude here, at this rural electric association, an attitude of trying to be one step ahead, to make sure that you can continue to provide safe, affordable, and reliable electricity that your customer base depends on,” USDA Secretary Vilsack said of PVREA at the announcement. Other speakers at the announcement included U.S. Representative Yadira Caraveo, former Colorado Governor Bill Ritter, and Colorado Agriculture Commissioner Kate Greenberg. “We see your efforts, and we're making sure to bring public investment to help you achieve your goals on behalf of the people in Northern Colorado,” Rep. Caraveo told PVREA and other attendees at the announcement. Secretary Vilsack also announced that CREA member co-op Delta-Montrose Electric Association received funding for creating a solar photovoltaic system to produce additional electricity and to reduce their emissions with the electricity they currently are providing to their customers. It is estimated that this project will reduce emissions by about 10%.

  • Beginning this month, #volunteer linecrews from seven Colorado electric co-ops will participate in Light Up Navajo V. Each four-person co-op crew will spend a week on the Navajo Nation setting power poles, running power lines, and preparing homes to receive #electric service. An initiative of the Navajo Tribal Utility Authority - NTUA in coordination with the American Public Power Association (APPA), Light Up Navajo brings electricity to families living on the Navajo Nation. Spanning an area larger than the entire state of West Virginia, Navajo Nation is home to approximately 186,500 Navajo citizens. More than 13,000 Navajo families currently live without basic access to electricity. Bringing #power to homes will provide these families with modern conveniences such as electric lighting, refrigeration for food, and access to electric heat and air-conditioning. Since 2018, CREA has participated in several philanthropic #electrification projects in Guatemala. Stay tuned to CREA’s social media channels for updates on these electrification trips.
