Happy Birthday President Jimmy Carter - The President who most positively impacted my life....read on to see why...you may be surprised! 1) Many of you know my personal devotion and that of Climate Impact Capital to sustainable energy and the energy transition. In 1977, President Carter created the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) which had the research and development of novel energy technologies core to its mission. In the same year, he started the Solar Energy Research Institute which is now National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Both entities have been fundamental in producing technology and supporting innovation that has created 1000s of start-ups, many of which we support now. 2) In 1978 he introduced the National Energy Act without which we would not have national fuel standards for cars, increasing pollution and hurting our economy. Less fuel used means less urban pollution (especially NOx and Ozone) which impacts me and millions of people with asthma. 3) In 1979 he put solar panels on the White House (he was well ahead of his time) and consistent with his long-term support for rural development put a community solar on his land in his hometown of Plains, Georgia that provides 50% of the town's power needs. In 2020, the UN Assembly declared 2021-2030 The Global Decade of Action for Road Safety and identified five pillars of actions under the Safe Systems Approach. Post-crash care was identified as one of these pillars that would ensure preservation of life, reduction of loss and injuries and lessening the financial burden caused by road crashes. Globally, most road safety interventions still put cyclists in the back burner.The safety of cyclists is the last to be discussed (if we are lucky). We believe it is necessary for all our marshals to have First Aid training because they can be the first responders during emergencies and help save a life and reduce injuries. By administering emergency care, we can safe lives, reduce injuries, pain and financial burden from health or loss of income. We hope to help whenever needed, in any emergency and not just during cycling emergencies. Let's be prepared. The link below leads to the first podcast of Ahead of the Torch, a community I started as an email newsletter 30 years ago to connect people interested in saving historic transportation and industrial artifacts. Today it exists as an 8.7K member Facebook group and a brand new website. Along the way, two experienced railroad preservationists partnered with me: T.J. Gaffney and Kelly Lynch, CFRE. Both have extensive professional preservation experience. I am humbled have them as friends and co-conspirators… I mean, co-creators. We decided that perhaps there would be some value in recorded conversations among us and other preservationists discussing the real issues that we all face. The first episode revisits the brilliant “Top 10 Rules for Rail Preservation” that our friend the late Jim Wrinn wrote while editor of TRAINS magazine. It’s a fantastic bit of insight from Jim that all museum and preservation groups can benefit from, whether related to trains or not.
