I earned a Certificate of Completion in Shifting Narratives to Prevent Bicyclist & Pedestrian Deaths. This course is offered by the University of South Florida and was developed by the Center for Urban Transportation Research. The course was developed based on the research "Framing the Bicyclist: A Qualitative Study of Media Discourse about Fatal Bicycle Crashes" and gives participants the skills to evaluate how language impacts pedestrian and bicycle deaths. My main takeaway is that using the correct language ( ie crash instead of accident), thematic framing, factual sentences, and avoiding language that is blame-based or biased are strategies that myself and others can use to shift the narrative to prevent bicyclist and pedestrian deaths.

Amazing speech! We watched this today in workshop at Cirque. University of Texas at Austin 2014 Commencement Address - Admiral William H. McRaven 1. If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed. 2. If you want to change the world, find someone to help you paddle. 3. If you want to change the world, measure a person by the size of their heart, not the size of their flippers. 4. If you want to change the world get over being a sugar cookie and keep moving forward. 5. If you want to change the world, don’t be afraid of the circuses. 6. If you want to change the world sometimes you have to slide down the obstacle head first. 7. If you want to change the world, don’t back down from the sharks. 8. If you want to change the world, you must be your very best in the darkest moment. 9. If you want to change the world, start singing when you’re up to your neck in mud. 10. If you want to change the world don’t ever, ever ring the bell. #universityoftexas #navyseals #changetheworld #solar #wind #energy #renewables #storage #energytransition

"Bathroom Breaks" in the field is a polite way of saying how to pee in the woods (easy to hide behind a tree) but if you are in an open field, shoreline, dunes, savannah, etc. it's a bit more tricky when you are with others. This article makes the point that students on field courses may not have learned the tricks when they were young because they did not go out into the natural world. If you teach field courses, this is your responsibility to help your students, and if you take field courses, ask what the accommodations are and advocate for them. and link to the University of Birmingham primer "Toilets + Field Trips" in the comments. https://lnkd.in/gGjKXv84

This is not infrastructure planning at it’s best:
Check this out - a new video rendering of a redesigned corridor in Eugene Oregon that neglects to show a single pedestrian or cyclist despite this corridor literally dividing the University of Oregon's 40,000 per day pedestrian dominant, car-minimal campus: https://lnkd.in/gQWweu3V. And don't get me started about how counter-productive it is to have 2-lane roundabouts (that's for speed, not flow) or to intersperse a series of roundabouts with signalized intersections (defeats the whole purpose). Since this was released on a late Friday afternoon, I'm sure I will be re-posting it over and over again because this is an unacceptable piece of infrastructure that stands to remain as is for the next 50 years. I welcome anyone sharing better real-life examples (I have an exact match from Utrecht, complete with BRT running down the middle that I will share separately) City of Eugene

If you had to go back in time, when would you go to, and would you do anything to alter the course of history? Would you study up on engineering and introduce solar panels to Franklin to stem the tide of fossil fuels? Figure out a way to inoculate Native Americans pre-Columbus? Kill Hitler? Befriend him as a child to try to steer him to good? Go educate early physicians about germs? Become a music teacher and try to prevent Nickelback from making *that* music? Would you ensure that what you do doesn't take credit from a historical figure? Or would you introduce a concept much earlier so that historical figures started from a more advanced point (like giving Marie Curie's insights to Da Vinci)? Save a culture? Save a people? Save the planet? And most importantly, how does our answer reflect how we're spending our time in our real life? I'd love to see this as a college application question. You get such a great sense for what people are really passionate about.

Celebrating Rockville Science Day: Inspiring Future Generations in Science This weekend, Rockville Science Day once again opens its doors to families, providing an exciting glimpse into the world of science. Events like these are not just about fun and education; they're crucial in inspiring the next generation of scientists, especially those from underrepresented groups, including girls, neurodiverse individuals, and LGBTQ+ youth. Science, at its core, is about curiosity, exploration, and challenging the known boundaries of knowledge. However, not every child feels that the world of science is welcoming or accessible to them. Rockville Science Day offers a unique opportunity to change these perceptions by actively involving and encouraging participation from all backgrounds. Why is this important? Because we all benefit when diverse perspectives are brought to the table. Research shows that diverse groups are more innovative and can solve complex problems more effectively than non-diverse groups. Encouraging underrepresented youth to embrace science can lead to breakthroughs that benefit society as a whole. For girls, who are historically underrepresented in fields like physics and engineering, seeing female scientists and engineers in action can light a spark of possibility. For neurodiverse children, the hands-on nature of many science activities provides a different avenue through which they can learn and excel, often more aligned with their strengths. LGBTQ+ youth, seeking spaces where they can be accepted and valued, can find in the sciences a community that judges on the basis of evidence and merit, rather than on biases or stereotypes. Rockville Science Day is more than just a local event; it's a gateway to a lifelong journey in science. By fostering an environment where all kids can see themselves as scientists, we are not just opening doors for individual careers but are also paving the way for a more inclusive and innovative future. Let's support and promote these opportunities, ensuring that every child can access their full potential and possibly one day, become the great scientists who will shape our future. The Equity Office is so proud to co-sponsor our Affinity Group in participating in this event to inspire future scientists. Thank you Kaitlyn Lucey for your leadership. US Pharmacopeia is so luck to have you and other USP staff represent us. Join us, share your experiences, and let's work together to make science truly for everyone! #RockvilleScienceDay #DiversityInSTEM #FutureScientists
