About us
The Bonneville Power Administration is a federal nonprofit wholesale power marketer that sells carbon-free electricity from 31 federal dams and one nuclear plant to millions of consumers and businesses in eight states, while operating three-quarters of the region’s high-voltage transmission grid. BPA also funds one of the largest fish and wildlife programs in the world, and, with its partners, pursues cost-effective energy savings and operational solutions that help maintain affordable, reliable and clean energy for the Northwest. At Bonneville Power, you’ll give back to the Northwest community that you call home while pursuing a rewarding career. We offer work/life balance whether you seek the first-rate outdoor opportunities or the many advantages of urban living, our locations throughout Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana let you choose your idyllic spot to build your life and career. We value the knowledge and experience of the many veterans we employ. As a federal agency, we actively encourage veterans who seek an exciting and challenging work environment to consider a career with us. BPA also offers unique opportunities for students and recent graduates to begin exploring careers in energy through our Pathways Internship and Recent Graduate programs. The U.S. and Canada have reached a historic milestone in modernizing the Columbia River Treaty. For BPA and our customers, it ensures a reliable and economical power supply and a more equitable distribution of power benefits, retaining more than a billion dollars of value in the Northwest. It also includes reassigning transmission rights to an entity designated by Canada, alleviating BPA of the associated transmission costs. Additionally, we will pursue potential expansion of BPA’s transmission system for renewable energy transfers into Canada. The agreement also provides a sound framework for continuing BPA’s environmental stewardship responsibilities. Ultimately, the agreement ensures both nations will continue to share in the benefits of the Columbia River power system, which is vital to economies and cultures of people on both sides of the border. https://lnkd.in/er55yRCh

Direct Service Industry customers (DSI) were once the cornerstone of BPA and played a critical role in the war effort in the 1940’s. Today, the energy that once served DSIs has shifted to meet the needs of BPA’s public preference customers, which are mostly consumer-owned power utilities. https://lnkd.in/giwimsTA

As people turn up their fans and AC during heat waves, demand on the power grid can soar to record levels. Without the massive generating capacity of hydroelectric dams, and their ability to readily convert water into energy, there wouldn’t be enough dependable power to meet those increased electricity demands. BPA Administrator John Hairston recently joined Orcas Power and Light General Manager Foster Hildreth and staff from both organizations on a tour of energy-related sites across the San Juan islands, including a test buoy for potential tidal generation and a community solar and battery project. The group also discussed the unique challenges of serving 20 local islands while meeting emerging demands such as EV charging stations and the planned electrification of the Washington State Ferry System.
