BPA Administrator John Hairston recently joined Orcas Power and Light General Manager Foster Hildreth and staff from both organizations on a tour of energy-related sites across the San Juan islands, including a test buoy for potential tidal generation and a community solar and battery project. The group also discussed the unique challenges of serving 20 local islands while meeting emerging demands such as EV charging stations and the planned electrification of the Washington State Ferry System.

I'll share more on this in a blog post soon, but for now I'll say that energy is one of several seemingly intractable issues we face. It's hard to overstate the complexity of energy challenges, and the way our energy systems work; combine that complexity with the politicization of the issues and that's why going from conversation to solution is a monumental task. However, community engagement is a proven strategy for moving forward and making progress on the toughest issues, and is most effective at a local or regional scale. Community engagement is often a long and energy intensive process, and can bring a wide range of emotions and tensions to the surface. But with intractable issues, trying the same thing over and over but expecting different results will often have the outcome you'd expect. It was a privilege to facilitate and help plan the Seacoast Energy Roundtable, and I look forward to future opportunities to build on it. Matt summed it up well.
Honored to have played a role in catalyzing and organizing the first New Hampshire Seacoast Energy Roundtable alongside the real event leaders - NH State Representative Chris Muns, NH State Senator Debra Altschiller, Roger Stephenson, APR, and Nate Bernitz. Winnacunnet High School hosted 60+ business leaders, residents, town managers, utility representatives, and state policymakers - a true cross section of the community. We wrestled with issues like EV infrastructure, electrification, and increasing renewable energy on the grid - with the big takeaway being that the New Hampshire statehouse has a great opportunity to provide much needed leadership in the energy transition that is happening before our eyes. It was encouraging to see folks from all corners respectfully working these important (and thorny) issues. Special thanks to the team at UNH Cooperative Extension for providing the framework for a productive discussion. Perhaps a template for other districts in the Granite State? …

I help individuals and organisations optimise their performance and innovative capacity through learning.
Every year, we try to encourage students to explore their creativity and deploy their knowledge to address societal issues and challenges through the TC Young Professional Creative Challenge. This year, we have participants who need your support and encourage for the work they have done under the theme Waste Management/Renewable Energy. For context: The Task The main activity of the challenge is to engage children in a problem identification and solving exercise, through which they are expected to examine an issues affecting them/community and design a project and solution which they present via a write up, an artefact or model and a video following the theme and task for the year. The task this year is encouraging children to gather the right information, knowledge and local martials that can enable them to adopt wise and responsible waste management/energy preservation and consumption practices as well as mechanisms to transform waste into renewable energy. This challenge invites children to identify and situate a specific problem (either on waste or energy) in a given context of their choice (their house, school or community,) and reflect on the current practices and issues around waste disposal and management, as well as energy usage or challenges (shortage or lack). Once a specific problem has been identified, the children are expected to clearly state and describe this problem and explain how it affects them/others in the chosen context (home, school or community), and then propose a sustainable solution to solve this problem detailing the developmental stages and processes of their solution and its implementation. Their projects are presented in the form of a written story, an arts work (drawing, painting, chart or craft or artefact) and a video, where they outline the various issues of the project (their name, the chosen problem, the nature of the problem the project is addressing, those affected and how, and the solution). So, what you are seeing (videos) is just a part of the challenge- Thanks for supporting.

In light of this morning’s election results, what new regulations could be put in place as a step towards clean energy in the UK? And how might this be implemented on a practical level? This topic, and more, was discussed at Buro Happold’s London office earlier this week as part of an Insider Media event – ‘Mapping the route to clean energy’. Alasdair Young, Partner and Global Energy Transition Leader, Buro Happold, was part of the roundtable of industry experts. Discussing the route to clean energy, many topics were covered. The group agreed that, in order to meet net zero nationally, decarbonising the grid was of the upmost importance to improve investor confidence, and enable investors to see grid connections for whole developments. The need for reforming the perception on renewable energy was also discussed – both from corporate consumers on the grid capacity and price, as well as the general public. The group delved into technologies that are key for unlocking sustainable innovation, including improving energy efficiency in buildings, as well as policy regulation and creating certainty around planning licensing and forward investment. Is there an error in my train of thought or are there better thoughts on how we reach carbon neutrality by 2050? Paradox: Renewable energy has a meager marginal cost, close to zero. As per EU legislation*, bids are allowed at marginal pricing**. However, considering the goal of being fully carbon-neutral by 2050, all electricity would have to be offered to the market for free. This situation raises concerns regarding long-term investments and how we can achieve our goals without them. Is upgrading the market design necessary? According to the existing rules of the electricity market: market rules shall deliver appropriate investment incentives for generation, in particular for long-term investments in a decarbonised and sustainable electricity system, energy storage, energy efficiency and demand response to meet market needs, and shall facilitate fair competition thus ensuring security of supply. In my view we do not have to upgrade the market design, we just need to reconsider our interpretation of "fair competition“ and „market-based". What does that mean? Let’s organise a fair competition for necessary capacities (in addition to energy). What would be the difficulties? To solve the problems efficiently, it is best to use the principle of least total cost. This may require more resources from responsible authorities, at least in some member-states, but it will be considerably less expensive than other alternatives. When should we start? It is crucial to act urgently and avoid making costly transitional decisions by solving each problem separately. *REMIT ** for experts: with some exceptions regarding opportunity costs

To energy sector innovators: the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO)'s 2024 Grid Innovation Fund (GIF) Proposal Guideline has been posted. This year, the GIF theme is Electrification and Demand Management with a focus on the transportation sector (electric vehicles) and heating/cooling sector. As a result of the energy transition, the electricity system is seeing an increase in demand and changes to electricity usage patterns. With these changes comes an opportunity to explore how the electrification of these two sectors can help support the grid. The IESO is seeking projects that will demonstrate how EVs and weather-sensitive controllable loads can provide system flexibility and be integrated to support the distribution network and bulk electricity system. We are pleased that the Ontario Energy Board’s Innovation Sandbox will play an important role as regulatory partner for this call, providing regulatory guidance to proponents. A Stakeholder Engagement session will be held on April 23, 2024, and proposals will be accepted between May 27 – July 21, 2024. Further information can be found here: https://lnkd.in/dn2mQAAb
With a growing number of Ontarians purchasing electric vehicles and heat pumps, the IESO’s Grid Innovation Fund (GIF) is releasing a call for proposals to leverage these technologies to contribute to grid flexibility, reliability, affordability and sustainability. This year’s call will provide up to $9.5 million for proposals that will test new opportunities to demonstrate how aggregations of electric vehicles and weather-sensitive controllable loads, such as heat pumps with thermal storage, can be leveraged to provide grid services and demand side management at both the local and provincial levels. In collaboration with the IESO, the Ontario Energy Board will serve as a regulatory partner, where proponents can concurrently seek guidance from its Innovation Sandbox.
