Provide All Infants with the Hepatitis B Birth Dose
It is recommended that all infants receive the first dose of the hepatitis B vaccine prior to discharge from the delivery facility.
Identify Infants Born to Hepatitis B Positive Mothers
Review every woman's HBsAg status upon admission to the facility and record status in the infant's chart.
HBsAg Negative Mother
- If a woman has known risk factors, retest
- Give birth dose prior to discharge from facility
- If your delivery facility is notified an HBsAg-positive woman anticipates to give birth there and you do not have hepatitis B immunization doses or HBIG contact the Kansas Perinatal Hepatitis B Prevention Program (PHBPP) coordinator, Sarah Chicchelly at 785-296-3685.
HBsAg Positive Mother
Give within 12 hours:
- Birth dose
- If your delivery facility is notified an HBsAg-positive woman anticipates to give birth there and you do not have hepatitis B immunization doses or HBIG contact the Kansas Perinatal Hepatitis B Prevention Program (PHBPP) coordinator, Sarah Chicchelly at 785-296-3685.
- Hepatitis B Immunoglobulin (HBIG)
- If your delivery facility is notified an HBsAg-positive woman anticipates to give birth there and you do not have hepatitis B immunization doses or HBIG contact the Kansas Perinatal Hepatitis B Prevention Program (PHBPP) coordinator, Sarah Chicchelly at 785-296-3685.
HBsAg Unknown Mother
- Test STAT
- If STAT test is HBsAg-positive report to KDHE within 24 hours
Report to KDHE Immediately
Report all HBsAg-positive women and HBIG and birth dose administration to PHBPP using Hospital Report Form (PDF).
