Delivery Facilities

Provide All Infants with the Hepatitis B Birth Dose

It is recommended that all infants receive the first dose of the hepatitis B vaccine prior to discharge from the delivery facility.

Identify Infants Born to Hepatitis B Positive Mothers

Review every woman's HBsAg status upon admission to the facility and record status in the infant's chart.

HBsAg Negative Mother

  • If a woman has known risk factors, retest
  • Give birth dose prior to discharge from facility
    • If your delivery facility is notified an HBsAg-positive woman anticipates to give birth there and you do not have hepatitis B immunization doses or HBIG contact the Kansas Perinatal Hepatitis B Prevention Program (PHBPP) coordinator, Sarah Chicchelly at 785-296-3685.

HBsAg Positive Mother

Give within 12 hours:

  • Birth dose
    • If your delivery facility is notified an HBsAg-positive woman anticipates to give birth there and you do not have hepatitis B immunization doses or HBIG contact the Kansas Perinatal Hepatitis B Prevention Program (PHBPP) coordinator, Sarah Chicchelly at 785-296-3685.
  • Hepatitis B Immunoglobulin (HBIG)
    • If your delivery facility is notified an HBsAg-positive woman anticipates to give birth there and you do not have hepatitis B immunization doses or HBIG contact the Kansas Perinatal Hepatitis B Prevention Program (PHBPP) coordinator, Sarah Chicchelly at 785-296-3685.

HBsAg Unknown Mother

  • Test STAT
    • If STAT test is HBsAg-positive report to KDHE within 24 hours

Report to KDHE Immediately

Report all HBsAg-positive women and HBIG and birth dose administration to PHBPP using Hospital Report Form (PDF).
