Analyst firm M-Lab and comparison site Cable.co.uk have today published their 2024 global broadband ISP speeds report, which reveals that the United Kingdom delivered an average (mean) download speed of 110.99Mbps (up from 93.62Mbps last year) – ranking us 35th fastest in the world (down from 34th in 2023).

Telecoms giant BT has released some new internet traffic statistics from the final UEFA Euro 2024 football match between England and Spain (8pm) on Sunday 14th July 2024, which saw a 142% increase in customers streaming the game compared to England’s semi-final against the Netherlands.

Mobile network analyst Streetwave has partnered up with the Caerphilly County Borough Council (CCBC) in Wales to harness local refuse (bin) collection trucks in order to map the local network (mobile broadband) performance across the area, which covers services from EE (BT), O2 (Virgin Media), Vodafone and Three UK.

The Institute of Customer Service (ICS) have just published their second biannual UK Customer Satisfaction Index for July 2024, which reveals that three mobile and broadband (telecoms) providers made it into their table of the country’s top 50 organisations – Tesco Mobile (20th), Utility Warehouse (23rd) and giffgaff (32nd). But it’s not all good news.

ISPreview’s latest biannual UK summary of fixed broadband coverage for H1 2024 has found that “full fibre” (FTTP) ISP networks have grown to reach 67.68% of premises (up from 60.54% in H2 2023) and 83.39% are within reach of “gigabit” speeds (up from 79.86%). The European Commission has this week published their annual 2024 ‘Broadband Coverage in Europe’ study, which reveals how the EU’s fixed gigabit broadband and 5G mobile networks compare across all of its 27 countries, plus Norway, Iceland, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

Network benchmarking firm MedUX has today published the results of a new study, which examined the fixed broadband performance and quality of three major UK ISPs – BT, Sky Broadband and Vodafone. Overall, BT ended up topping the rankings, but it’s unclear why they left out TalkTalk and Virgin Media, both of which are bigger than Vodafone.

A recent study from business comparison service Bionic claims to have identified the best and worst UK train line operators for onboard WiFi internet access, which was achieved by analysing negative reviews that mentioned the service. The results suggest that the best operator for WiFi is ScotRail, while the worst came out as Cross Country trains.

The Independent Networks Co-operative Association (INCA), which represents many of the UK’s alternative gigabit broadband providers, has today published a new manifesto. The document sets out the key recommendations that it thinks the next government will need to implement – within the first 100 days in office – to help boost network roll-outs.

A new study from Cable.co.uk and M-Lab has used data gathered from 62 million UK internet-based speed tests, conducted between 1st July 2023 and 13th May 2024, to rank each of the country’s parliamentary constituencies by their average broadband ISP download performance. Overall, SNP constituencies were found to be the slowest, while Labour were the fastest.

Today we’re taking our usual biannual look back to see how the average UK broadband download and upload speeds have changed across the fastest nationally available fixed line ISPs, mobile operators and Starlink (satellite) since the end of 2023. Overall, broadband speeds have continued to improve, albeit not without some surprises.

Energy and communications provider Telecom Plus, which trades as Utility Warehouse (UW), has just published their latest Full Year Results and revealed that their broadband ISP grew its total UK customer base to 374,792 (up by 20.67k in the year) and their mobile base hit 466,216 (up by 72k).

A new Censuswide survey of 2,004 UK respondents, which was commissioned by Broadband Genie, has claimed that 7.09% of respondents would be willing to live in or around somewhere with “coastal erosion” if it was for their dream home, but only 5.34% were willing to live with “poor broadband“.

New data from broadband connection testing firm Ookla, which operates the popular online Speedtest.net service for internet users, has revealed the mobile data (4G, 5G) and WiFi performance results from some of the world’s busiest airports, including London Gatwick (LGW) and London Heathrow (LHR) in the UK.
