City of Bath to Deploy New 5G OpenRAN Mobile Pilot this Summer

The Western O-RAN Deployment (WORD) project, which is supported by £9.9m of public funding from the UK Government (here), is to begin rolling out a new Open Radio Access Network (OpenRAN) using 5G Standalone technology to serve parts of the City of Bath in Somerset (England) where demand is at its highest – starting “later this summer“.

The Tyne and Wear Metro, which is an overground and underground light rail rapid transit system that is operated by Nexus (public body), looks unlikely to see 4G and 5G mobile coverage being expanded from O2 (Virgin Media), Vodafone and Three UK after the operators “turned down the opportunity to install equipment in the tunnels.”

Customers looking to join Sky Mobile (Sky) will, from sometime later this morning, finally be able to take out a 4G and 5G capable mobile plan that includes “unlimited data” (mobile broadband). Previously, the biggest mobile plan you could get from Sky came with a 100GB monthly data allowance for £30 per month.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK conducted another trial of Network Slicing technology on their latest 5G Standalone (SA) powered mobile broadband network at this year’s Glastonbury Festival, which despite heavy network load was able to dedicate a “slice” of capacity to help drink vendors speed up card transactions.

Streetwave Maps Mobile Network Speeds in Caerphilly Using Bin Lorries UPDATE

Mobile operator EE (BT) claims to have achieved a “European first” with Nokia and Qualcomm in the UK by trialling Carrier Aggregation (CA) on 5G Standalone (5G SA) mobile technology with Five Component Carriers (i.e. 150MHz total bandwidth), which boosted their mobile broadband download speeds to 1.85Gbps.

Vodafone and Virgin Media O2 Sign UK Network Sharing Agreement

Mobile network operators Vodafone and O2 (Virgin Media) have today announced a new 10-year network sharing agreement. Crucially, the deal also includes a provision for Vodafone’s proposed merger with Three UK (aka – MergeCo), which will enable the merged company to “participate” in the same network sharing deal and divest some radio spectrum to O2.

BT (EE) has confirmed to ISPreview that they’re in advanced talks over a new agreement with rivals, including at least O2 (Virgin Media) and Vodafone, that will give them the ability to access some of EE’s mobile masts in remote locations. The deal may help to improve 4G (mobile broadband) coverage in Partial Not-Spot areas and tackle delays.
