6G Mobile Sim

11th July, 2024 (3 Comments)

The University of Sheffield in South Yorkshire has officially launched the UK’s first national 6G research facility – the imaginatively titled ‘National 6G Radio Systems Facility‘ (N6GRSF) – to help test and develop the next generation of mobile (mobile broadband) network technologies.

Fibre optic speeds of the future visualised for MJ by CoPilot on 28062024

28th June, 2024 (1 Comment)

A new world data speed record has just been set after a team of Japanese researchers from the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), using a standard commercially available optical fibre, managed to reach a transmission rate of 402.2Tbps (Terabits per second) over a distance of 50km.

Ceredigion Rubbish Truck Council PR 12062024

12th June, 2024 (8 Comments)

The Growing Mid Wales (GMW) programme has launched a major new project in Mid Wales, which aims to identify areas with poor 4G mobile (mobile broadband) coverage and network capacity (“mobile not-spots“) by installing “advanced mobile data-capturing devices” on waste collection vehicles across Powys and Ceredigion.

Eutelsat’s global network of OneWeb broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), which was partly supported by the UK Government, has just secured a platinum score in the Space Sustainability Ratings (SSR) that is designed to encourage such companies to create and implement sustainable space missions and operations.

wireless broadband radio spectrum signal

13th May, 2024 (8 Comments)

Future wireless broadband and home networks, using technologies such as 6G or WiFi in the higher frequency mmW and sub-TeraHertz (THz) bands (i.e. between around 24GHz and 300GHz), could be set for a significant speed boost after researchers discovered a way to curve light beams around objects.

Starlink-Degraded-Service-Message-in-App

11th May, 2024 (5 Comments)

SpaceX has warned customers of Starlink’s mega constellation of ultrafast broadband satellites, which sit in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), that they may experience “degraded service” as a result of a major geomagnetic solar storm that hit the planet, which last night also caused the northern lights to spread across much of the UK.

video gamer playing on computer

3rd April, 2024 (14 Comments)

Mobile operator and UK ISP Vodafone have teamed up with Nokia Bell Labs to conduct a “world’s first trial” of the “viability” of harnessing L4S (Low Latency, Low Loss, and Scalable Throughput) technology over passive optical networks (PON), which could “greatly improve” network latency times for internet activities like AR, video conferencing and multiplayer gaming, even during peak hours.

Morse Micro HaLow WiFi Test on Beach

2nd February, 2024 (8 Comments)

Sydney-based fabless semiconductor startup Morse Micro has successfully demonstrated how outdoor Wi-Fi signals, using their HaLow (802.11ah) chips, can be made to work at distances that are many times the reach of a conventional Wi-Fi technology. The trial saw them push a working wireless network up to 3km from its source.

10th January, 2024 (10 Comments)

The UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has today published an interesting new white paper that, in collaboration with Queen Mary University of London, explores whether “reflective surfaces” could be used to cost-effectively extend the coverage of wireless broadband and mobile networks. But more research is required.

wifi uk internet security

8th January, 2024 (20 Comments)

The Wi-Fi Alliance has today official begun certification for the next generation of Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) capable wireless networking devices. The new Wi-Fi 7 standard is expected to “see rapid adoption“, with more than 233 million devices predicted to enter the market in 2024 alone. Just don’t expect to see those dizzy speed claims of 46Gbps in the real-world.
