Which makes me feel a lot better about Dresden eventually coming to an end. Alright. So those of you who are reading the series already know this, but for those of you who don't know, Codex Alera a mash-up of a bunch of seemingly oddball stuff to put together in one story.

That's nuts, right?! I have absolutely ZERO explanation as to why it works, but it does. I loved these characters and I loved this world. And this was pretty much a perfect ending. Or as close to it as an author can get. I don't know who the fuck I'd recommend this to in a generic way, but if you're in the market for something off the wall in fantasy? Yeah. Recommended!...more

The undeniable star of the show was Molly. Well, and Mouse. Because...um, he's Mouse. But Molly is the human breakout star of the show. Then again, if I had my way, Butcher would write a spin-off about her so I could read her solo stories.

Anyway. Molly did her cool sidekick stuff. Mouse did his cool temple dog stuff. And Harry pulled out his staff, fought a crazy wizard, forzared a golem, and saved the day.

The majority of the story is about Tavi & Co. taking their frenemy Varg and his troops back to the Canim continent, and trying to help them take on the Vord. I don't want to give anything away -unlike these fucking book titles - but Tavi continues to do all the things that made me originally love him. Naturally, his intelligence, courage, and goodness help him collect even more allies by the time this one is over. He's one of the most cheer-worthy heroes I've read about in a long time, and I love that Butcher created such a likable character to star in this series. It's nice to see that good guys don't always finish last! I mean, is there anything Tavi can't do when he puts his mind to it?!
Ok, now last time around, I whined a bit about Bernard and Amara being the most boring couple on the planet to read about. So when they were showed up again, and were sent on a mission by Gaius again, which meant more page time spent questing with them again...? I felt a tad disappointed. Again.
And while I didn't particularly enjoy reading about the first part of their journey, they pulled a nice little twist on me at the end that made it all worthwhile.
Oh! And speaking of twists! Isana learns some stuff that turns something that (I thought) was set in stone on its head. It makes a bad guy look like, well, maybe not a good guy, but perhaps a better guy. It made me look at the character differently, at any rate.
Princeps' Fury was an improvement on the last installment for me in a lot of ways, but there was still a bit too much wah, wah, wah boring shit about battle strategy and other descriptive questing nonsense. I tend to skim that sort of thing to get to (what I consider) the good stuff. However, at least this time around there was a lot more action to hold my attention.

This hurts me because I'm usually the first one to yell, Bring on the mindless explosions! So I can't believe I'm saying this, but I prefer it when Butcher takes a breath and writes about his characters a little more. I just finished the short stories about Bigfoot and I loved it. This? The pacing was just breakneck, and I was exhausted by the time I finished. It was ONE LONG FIGHT SCENE. I mean, the vast majority of page time is taken up with descriptions of people twisting and leaping while shooting bazookas or throwing spells. And when I say long, I mean it. Just when you think it's finally over? It's not. There's more. I'm too invested to stop now, but I'm praying to the gods that Butcher puts an end to this soon. I feel like it's running out of steam and all that's left of the plot is Harry screaming FORZARE over and over. Honestly, I'd like to see one of my favorite long-running series go out on a high note.
Ok. And I'm going to say something that is probably kind of controversial, so if you don't feel the same, just know that I respect your opinion and we'll just have to agree to disagree. Over the years, I've grown to dislike Karen Murphy more and more. She's the equivalent of that squeaky little kid that has to annoyingly insert itself into every conversation with the adults. Stop it, already! Go eat your graham crackers and shut the fuck up. Anyway, I suddenly realized upon listening to this book that this particular feeling has been growing exponentially with each passing story. Maybe that's because she seems to be getting more and more page time as the years go by? I don't know.
Which brings me to this: I really hate Karen and Harry as a couple. The complete lack of chemistry between those two made the love scenes in this book almost unbearable to watch with my mind's eye.
Almost. What actually made the love scenes unbearable was the fact that he was sloughing the white, wrinkled, wet, and intensely gross dead skin off of her arm before they got busy. <--she sawed the cast off of her arm, in case you've forgotten.
As for me, I'll never forget that particular sex scene, because although it was pretty much fade to black, I can still feel the chunky bile rising in my throat at the thought of how bad her fucking skin would reek after being wrapped in plaster for months. Have you ever smelled that? I have. It's nauseating and I don't want that aroma anywhere near my lady boner.

This next part is a HUGE spoiler for this book, so please don't click on this unless you've read Battle Ground. (view spoiler)[I didn't shed a tear when Murph died. It was more of a well, I'm glad he gave such a long-running character a good death and I hope to hell that she stays fucking dead feeling. I honestly would rather see Harry with the soul-sucking vampire, than have Murphy rise from the dead due to some Ex Machina deal with fairies or whatever other contrived plot might see her come back. NO. Please no. She was the worst character in the entire series and I'm thrilled I won't have to read about her anymore. I know, I know! That sounds so mean. And yet...

So what leads up to this, you ask? Well, the bottom line is that if you've read one book from the Dresden Files, you've read them all. 1) Something has gone terribly wrong and Harry is at the center of it. 2) Bad guys are coming at him from every angle and there seems to be no way out for our intrepid hero. 3) His friends & family are in danger and he's going to have to do something crazy to save them. 4) Oh, and there's some secret that would make everyone understand why he's acting so sketchy but he's got to keep it hidden because of plot. Wow. Book 15, already? Huh. Well I guess since I've been reading these books for years now, that sort of makes sense. So. How did Skin Game hold up to scrutiny? It was classic Dresden. And you can take that whichever way you want. If you're a die-hard fan of this series, and you still enjoy Butcher's books about the wacky (but lovable) wizard, who can't help getting himself in over his head...then you'll love this one. However, if you were hoping for something different this time around? Nope. What it was is what it still is. Skin Game is the same high-octane novel that I've come to expect from this author, and from this series. And, just like all the other novels, the action never lets up enough for you to catch your breath. Also, if you were hoping there was some resolution to Harry's multiple problems? Psssht. Forget it! Looks like book 16 will hit the stores sometime in 2015, but I'm not counting on that one laying anything to rest, either.
If you've ever read a book from the Dresden Files, then you know there's not really a way to coherently explain everything that goes on in the story. Too much! Too much! However, I can say that it involves robbing Hades of the Holy Grail, a parasite that may explode from Harry's head, a hilarious sex scene with Murphy, Butters and Bob's skull on a magically powered skateboard, Michael with the power of an archangel, an Honest-To-God lightsaber, and Santa Clause vetting for a mercenary. And really, that just scratches the surface...
Sound like your cuppa tea? If so, then I suggest you go grab a copy. However, be warned that this is not a series that you can plunk down in the middle of, and hope to catch up. If you're serious about starting this one, you've got a whole lotta reading to catch up on! ...more

If you haven't been keeping up with the books, then you may be surprised to find out that most of Harry's problems center around his new job as Mab's Winter Knight. Whodathunkit, right?
I liked Cold Days a bit better than Ghost Story. Harry and Co. seemed a little more like themselves in this one, and (bonus!) Thomas played a large part in the story line. I wish Michael would have made an appearance, preferably with Harry's daughter in tow. When are we going to meet that kid!? And where is Mister??
The ending was very...interesting. Sorry, no spoilers!

Seriously, I will read anything with Harry in it and call it gold. Gold! Having said that, I think most non-fans will think these particular graphic novels are turd nuggets. I can't say for sure that I would be able to follow the plot very well if I hadn't already read the book. And I hate to say it, but it may not be the best idea to cram a novel like this into a thin two volume comic book. A lot of the world building is missing, a lot of the humor is missing, and a lot of the story is missing. But I don't care. I love Harry! Seriously, if anyone could convince me to have more children, it would be Harry. That's right, I would have wizard babies for Harry. And just so you know, I had my last child au naturel (No! Not on purpose, you idiot!), so that's really saying something. Ahem.
Like all of the books in The Dresden Files, there is no real way to describe what happened in the story. There's just too much that goes on in each book. It's part of the charm of this series, and the main reason that I love it so much. It's like an action movie, minus the bad acting and the occasionally cheesy special effects. Yes, there are moments that are emotionally poignant. It's just that they occur while things happen to be blowing up in the background. I know! What's not to love about that?!
I was really nervous that this one would be a disappointment, because eventually it will have to happen, right? *sigh* I'm sure at some point Butcher will let me down...but it didn't happen this time! Now all that's left to do is wait till Cold Days comes out!...more

A collection short stories from the Dresden Files, including the new one that takes place immediately after Changes. Aftermath was the reason I wanted to get my hands on Side Jobs, but there were also quite a few of Butcher's other short stories that I hadn't read yet. Mostly, I just skimmed the stuff that I'd already read, but there were two stories in particular (Backup and Warriors) that I found myself unable to stop from reading again. I'm not big on reading something more than once, so it kind of took me by surprise when I got sucked into those stories again.
