I saw this girl in the crowd in during Chinese New Year celebrations in Paris. She briefly looked at me and unfortunately I didn't get a chance to focus on her face.

New Orleans Historic Voodoo Museum is a voodoo museum in New Orleans, United States, which opened in 1972. It is situated between Bourbon and Royal Streets in the center of the French Quarter.

A photograph of a sunset in the New Forest, processed with a Sky Replacement in Photoshop.

It looked even more spectacular in real life, but the Canon did a pretty good job. Luckily it was a smooth flight, not too cloudy and the rising sun added subtle pastel colours to the scene. Taken during an early morning Air New Zealand flight from Palmerston North to Auckland.

There are actually eight volcanoes in line of sight, but White Island that erupted 9 Dec 2019, is just out of view in the top centre of the photo. All these volcanoes form part of the Pacific Ring of Fire and most have erupted in recent years. The Lake Taupo is considered New Zealand's largest eruption during the last 20,000 years. Estimated dates suggested for the Taupo eruption have ranged from 131 to 233 AD. The resulting ash turned the sky red over Rome and China.

It amuses me. That's an american apparel size large, btw. Also, when I was a kid I had quite the collection of plastic cocktail swords that I referred to as my "en gardes".

Image of the Statue of Liberty take from New York Harbor at sunset, the island and statue itself a national monument is under the auspices of the National Park Service from my archives capture back in 2018. The Statue of Liberty was a gift from our French comrades back in 19th Century. The idea in 1865 of a monument for the United States was first proposed by Frenchman Edouard de Laboulaye. It took a decade for that concept to percolate into a real proposal with sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi commissioned to design a sculpture with the target completion 1876, the centennial of the signing of the Declaration of Independence of the United States. The original proposal for the monuments name was “Liberty Enlightening the World” and would be a joint endeavor between France and the United States. The United States would build the pedestal for the monument but struggled mightily for the capital to build said pedestal. The French had issues raising capital for the statue as well.

Regardless of the financial issues Bartholdi realized the structural integrity of his massive statue was beyond his artisan knowledge, so he sought knowledgeable help and commissioned Alexandre Gustave Eiffel (designer of the Eiffel Tower) who designed a massive iron pylon and the metal skeletal secondary framework that would be required to put this massive memorial together. After a final push from newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer that poked directly at the American middle class and the wealthy the necessary funding for the pedestal was raised and the pedestal was finished in the spring of 1886. The statue actually was finished in France in 1884, reduced into 350 individual pieces that arrived in New York Harbor summer of 1885 on French frigate “Isere”. So, in October of 1886, 10 years late for the Declaration of Independence centennial celebration New Jersey’s own United States President Grover Cleveland oversaw the dedication of the completed monument.

The New York City Port Authority Bus terminal (PABT) located on Eighth Avenue; just east of the Lincoln Tunnel is largest bus terminal in the United States and by sheer volume the busiest in the world as in 2011 there were 2.263 million bus departures from the station. It opened in 1950 as there was a concerted effort to centralize bus activity in the city as there were various bus terminals located throughout mid-town Manhattan. The buses at that point and time offered an alternative to the trains that traveled through subterranean tunnels under the Hudson River and the river ferries both of which were owned and run by passenger rail service companies who were operating in the red as passenger air travel eclipsed passenger train travel and coming down the pike was Eisenhower’s Interstate Highway System to put the nail in the proverbial coffin of passenger train travel. The bus companies offered better service, weren’t suffering from cutbacks like the money starved rail companies and Greyhound which operated a modern station by old Pennsylvania Station could get you anywhere in the United States cheaper than New York Central Railroad or Pennsylvania Railroad. When the terminal opened in 1950, it was basically what today is called the South Wing and even back then it became painfully obvious that it would be hard pressed to meet the demand. In 1963 three levels of parking to accommodate 1,000 cars was added vertically. Two years later in 1965, plans were floated about a much needed expansion to increase the terminal to 42nd Street. That ‘North Wing’ did not open until 1979 when I was in high school.

In 2007 the original ‘South Wing’ was given what was referred to as a ‘Seismic Retrofit’ that cost $52 million that reinforced and stabilized the building against earthquakes and that what can be seen in this image, the steel beams fortifying the outside walls of the south wing. In 2008 it received at least one travel websites distinct honor of “World's Top 10 Ugliest Buildings and Monuments”. Still the majority of people that come into New York via public transportation come through the PABT so they waited or got off or walked by this aging overburdened transportation terminal.
