Jon Kay was flooded with support as he shared a career update away from BBC Breakfast. The 54-year-old has worked for the BBC for more than three decades and joined the BBC Breakfast team in 2009.

He became a main presenter in 2022 and usually fronts the flagship programme from Monday to Wednesday alongside Sally Nugent. While he is best known for hosting BBC Breakfast, Jon also does work for BBC News.

On Sunday (July 7), Jon took to Instagram to share photos taken as he was covering the General Election. The newsreader was joined by Sophie Raworth as they co-presented Friday’s (July 5) rolling election coverage live from Westminster on BBC One.

Alongside the snaps, he wrote: "Well, that was a mammoth shift! Nine hours on air - and it went in a flash."

Jon continued: "An absolute honour to co-present Friday’s rolling election coverage live from Westminster on BBC One. Massive thanks to the brilliant Sophie Raworth and to the whole team who worked so hard over the last few weeks to make sure everything was ready."

Turning his attention to BBC fans, Jon added: "And huge thanks to all our guests and the millions of viewers who chose to spend Friday with us."

The post was inundated with supportive messages as fans praised the BBC's coverage. One wrote: "Well done Jon! What a marathon!"

Another agreed: "Well done Jon and the team, amazing coverage." A third commented: "You were absolutely fantastic and kept the energy levels up right to the end! Awesome."

Another said: "You and Sophie worked well together - I watched most of the coverage and thought it was delivered very well." While someone else added: "You eye both amazing. Jon you did so well even though your give was clearly getting sore by the end."

Jon returned to screens on Monday (July 8), however, he wasn't joined by his usual co-host. With Sally Nugent absent from the programme, Sarah Campbell stepped in to replace her.

The broadcaster enraged several viewers during the programme however, following his interview with Darren Jones. Fans hit out at Jon's line of questioning, while another confessed to switching off and putting Good Morning Britain on instead.
