Jon Kay asks Darren Jones about public sector pay after viewer questions

BBC Breakfast viewers switched over to Good Morning Britain as they blasted Jon Kay. The 54-year-old fronted Monday's instalment (July 8) of the BBC programme alongside Sarah Campbell, who stepped in for the absent Sally Nugent.

Following Labour's win in the General Election, BBC Breakfast welcomed Darren Jones, the new Chief Secretary to the Treasury. He was called up by Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer to become second-in-command to Chancellor Rachel Reeves.

Jon wasted no time "getting down to business" as he quizzed the Bristol MP on how they are going to get the economy going after Labour promised growth.

The 37-year-old explained that Labour's first and most important mission in government is to get growth back into the economy to enable "secure and sustainable" public finances again. Jon was keen to know more, responding: "There's no doubt it's important, but how are you going to deliver it?"

Later in the interview, the presenter said: "Although the headline number of seats that you won as Labour is enormous, in terms of the share of the vote across the country, that wasn't so impressive. Under 40 percent of people actually voted for you."

The MP responded: "I find this argument quite amusing. This is a once in a generation, historic victory for the Labour party and for our Prime Minister Keir Starmer with that enormous majority, larger than I was expecting when the exit poll landed."

Jon went on to ask about the public sector, probing: "Is there going to be enough money to stop junior doctors from taking more industrial action?" Jones explained that Wes Streeting is meeting with junior doctor representatives on Tuesday (July 9) as they are keen to make a deal.

Jon interjected: "How quickly do think that could happen?" The newsreader was also interested to know what Labour are planning to do in regards to changing compensation on the state pension.

He later added: "You're saying there's more work to be done but you know there's a lot of people out there who are really impatient and who will say, 'Hang on a minute. You've waited in opposition. You've had the polls in your favour for years now. You've now got power, what's holding you up?'"

Jones hit back: "We've been in power for three days so give us a bit of time. There's not much we can do in opposition apart from encouraging the Conservatives to get on with it. But there is more work to be done."

BBC Breakfast viewers weren't pleased with Jon's line of questioning as they took to social media to complain. One wrote: "Poor interview by #JonKay but #DarrenJones handled himself well. Jon you’re going to have to find a new interview technique & get used to this new style of intelligent MP’s who will answer questions. So please step up & ask good questions."

A second agreed: "Jon Kay reading out a long wish list for what Labour could do. Get a grip Jon, it’s DAY FOUR." Another penned: "Gotcha type questioning is not appropriate now, Labour have inherited an absolute mess and need time to try and sort it out."

Confessing they had changed channels, a fourth said: "Listening to Jon Kay's banal questioning - Jesus Christ. Switch back to ITV where they're having an intelligent conversation about house building. Thank you ITV."
