TTC transit control continues to ask subway operators to reduce their speed through certain areas of the subway system as a safety precaution due to crews at track level performing ongoing maintenance on the tracks. These reduced speed zones mean that trains travel more slowly than normally in the area.

Here’s where reduced speed zones are in effect on Lines 1 and 2:

  • Line 1 Yonge - University:
  • Southbound between Glencairn and Lawrence West stations;
  • Southbound between King and Union stations;
  • Northbound between Bloor and Rosedale stations;
  • Northbound between St. Clair West and Eglinton West stations;
  • Northbound between Wilson and Sheppard West stations;
  • Both ways between Wilson and Lawrence West stations; and
  • Both ways between St Clair West and Dupont stations.
  • Line 2 Bloor -Danforth:
  • Eastbound between Coxwell and Woodbine stations;
  • Eastbound between Victoria Park and Warden stations; and
  • Westbound between Kennedy and Warden stations.

At reduced speeds, trains are moving at between 15 and 25 kilometres per hour (km/h), instead of normal speeds of 40 to 50 km/h.

The TTC is delaying the start of service along Line 2 Bloor - Danforth subway between Broadview and St George stations this Sunday, July 21. All Line 2 trains operate only between Kennedy and Broadview stations and between Kipling and St George stations before 11 a.m. that day.

Shuttle buses partially replace subway service between the two stations, stopping on the street near stations on the closed section of the line.

(Or, consider a shuttle-bus alternative.)

Most stations on the closed section of Line 2 remain open so you can pay for fares or connect with buses, streetcars and Line 1 Yonge - University subway trains. However, Sherbourne and Bay stations are closed before 11 a.m.

Although shuttle buses are accessible, Wheel-Trans service is also available between Broadview and St George stations. Ask staff in each station for information about Wheel-Trans service.

While this section of Line 2 is closed, City of Toronto contractors work under the Prince Edward Viaduct to replace beams.

After 11 p.m. from Monday, July 15 until Thursday, July 18, the TTC is operating Line 1 Yonge - University subway trains in both directions along the southbound tracks only between Finch West and Sheppard West stations.

During single-track operation, both south- and northbound trains alternate along the southbound tracks. The TTC is operating a subway shuttle train between Finch West and Sheppard West. The subway shuttle train operates along the southbound tracks, to accommodate “tunnel maintenance, including leak remediation work” on the northbound tracks.

You must board southbound trains on the northbound platforms at Finch West and Downsview Park stations. You’ll have to change trains at Finch West and Sheppard West stations. You may also have to wait for trains longer than usually. Expect delays as much as 20 minutes for your trip.

If you require Wheel-Trans service, speak with any TTC customer service staff member for help or directions.

Note that buses replace subway trains along Line 1 between Sheppard West and St Clair West stations after 11 p.m. from Monday until Friday, July 19.

According to a TTC news release, “While the TTC does most subway maintenance at the conclusion of service each night, it continues to require weekend and early weeknight closures to complete critical infrastructure and state-of-good-repair work.”

The TTC is closing Line 1 Yonge - University subway earlier than usually between Sheppard West and St Clair West stations Monday, July 15 until Friday, July 19. Line 1 subway trains operate only between Vaughan Metropolitan Centre and Sheppard West stations and between St Clair West and Finch stations after 11 p.m. those evenings.

Frequent shuttle buses partly replace subway service. The buses drop off or pick up passengers near all stations on the closed section of the line. (Or, consider a shuttle-bus alternative.)

All stations on the closed section of Line 1 remain open so you can pay fares or connect with TTC buses and streetcars or GO Transit and York Region Transit buses.

While this section of Line 1 is closed, TTC crews are maintaining the tracks. In a report to the Toronto Transit Commission (the TTC Board), TTC staff identified “major maintenance and rail replacement” south of Lawrence West Station as a reason for this closure.

From Monday until Thursday, July 18, the TTC is operating subway trains along a single track between Finch West and Sheppard West stations. Expect longer than normal travel times of about 20 minutes.

According to a TTC news release, “While the TTC does most subway maintenance at the conclusion of service each night, it continues to require weekend and early weeknight closures to complete critical infrastructure and state-of-good-repair work.”

Crews set up the work zone shortly after 11 p.m. Friday, July 12 and start working about 7 a.m. Saturday, July 13. Work includes saw-cutting concrete, breaking and removing concrete, replacing the old rail with new rail and placing new concrete. Thhey continue working until Wednesday, July 17. They mostly break and remove concrete from 7 a.m. until 11 p.m. each day.

The TTC says, “Some around-the-clock work is required to ensure the quality installation of new rail and concrete. These expected activities include rail placement, welding, and grinding.”

Crews pour new concrete into the track area and set it to cure before they can remove the work zone and traffic can again flow through all parts of the intersection.
