Ensure no spillover of violence from Manipur into Cachar: Himanta
Guwahati: Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday asked the Cachar administration to ensure that peace is maintained in the district and there is no spillover of violence from neighbouring Manipur.
In the wake of recent incidents of ethnic strife in Jiribam district of Manipur, many people from the state have taken refuge in adjoining southern Assam’s Cachar district.

In a video-conference with the deputy commissioner and SP of Cachar, Sarma instructed them to take all necessary measures to maintain peace and tranquility in the district. He emphasised the importance of providing humanitarian aid to the people from Manipur who have sought refuge in Assam, ensuring their safety and well-being.
The CMO shared the details of the meeting on X, “instructed them to ensure peace and tranquility is maintained in Cachar. HCM instructed officials to ensure that all humanitarian aid is provided to the people who have taken refuge in the district.”
To prevent any spillover of violence into Assam, police have been maintaining a tight vigil in areas bordering Manipur. Regular patrolling and area domination exercises are being conducted to ensure the safety and security of the residents. A police officer confirmed that these measures are being taken to maintain law and order in the region.
In a collaborative effort, the police forces of Manipur and Assam last Sunday held a meeting to address the recent unrest in Jiribam district, marking the first such joint operation since the intercommunity conflict that erupted in Manipur last year.

The decision to work hand in hand comes amid Jiribam, which borders Assam, emerging as the latest hotspot of tension in the state.
In a statement, Manipur Police said police officers of Assam and Manipur had a joint night street meeting at Jiribam along the Assam-Manipur border in connection with the prevailing scenario in the region and “regular patrolling and area domination have been intensified in the entire riverine stretch of Barak and Jiri rivers.”
Trouble broke out in Jiribam district, which was untouched by last year’s conflict, on June 6 after the alleged killing of a 59-year-old man by unidentified miscreants.
