How can public markets contribute to sustainable development in emerging markets and developing economies (EMDEs)? This MOBILIST research report, compiled in collaboration with the Brazilian Stock Exchange (B3) and the Global Infrastructure Hub, considers how public markets can mobilise private capital to close the climate finance gap in Brazil and other EMDEs. It analyses the unique attributes of listed stocks, bonds, funds, and other products that make them well-suited to meeting financing needs in EMDEs and discusses some of the associated risks and mitigants. CLIMATE CHANGE BRAZIL: WILDFIRES SHOOT UP ALMOST 1,000%  2024's #climateextremes of all kinds seem to be rivaling 2023 worldwide. Brazil, depending on its large diverse regions, is facing records in temperatures, rainfalls, floods, droughts, wildfires, lightning and sea level. While the country is still struggling to recover from the record floods that hit the South for about 1 month (arguably the country's worst natural disaster in history), the Center-West is living the opposite ordeal: droughts and wildfires The latter is called "Pantanal" and is one of the very largest contiguous wetlands on the Planet with an almost unmatchable biome (variety of natural community of fauna & flora)= 140,000 Km2/ 34,600 acres This year the excessive drought is bringing with it some 1,450 wildfire spots (so far) compared to 133 in the same period of 2023, a shoot-up of about one-thousand percent The usual drier season for the Pantanal starts gradually in July, peaking in August & September but this year it not only kicked-off earlier but in overwhelming record numbers And local meteorologists are predicting that this year's season will be drier than usual breaking the previous recent record, with more wildfires from which the far-reaching thick smoke adds up to exacerbate #climatechange The Pantanal used to be a very important territory that helped balance the weather (not too dry and not too wet / controlling regional rivers from either drying or flooding etc) not only in Brazil but in neighboring countries as well. These past few years this natural regulatory mechanism has been weakening As a result, a vast number of diverse animals like alligators/ reptiles, felines/ mammals both small and large, fishes etc are being encircled by the fires/droughts and dying, another incalculable disaster for our disappearing animal variety We must take our current growing-in-momentum climate crises as a war, the War of all Wars; the greatest threat to our civilization. The time for resolute coordinated radical measures against it is running out very quickly. #UnitedNations's (#UN) #AntonioGuterres projected a deadline time-frame for true sincere and unified actions of up to 18 months We must be acutely aware, vigilant and pressing their local decision-makers/ representatives with all the emmonition available. #climatecrisis #climatecrises #globalwarming #climatdemergency

Conservation works. Across a wide swath of indicators. This article is a fantastic overview of how and why. I’ve just landed in #Brazil to visit our WeForest 🌿 partner projects in the Amazon and Atlantic Forest. Every time I see our projects up close, they all clearly show the transformative effect of science-based and human-centered #conservation and #restoration. So I love to read the science behind what I see and hear across the ecosystems and communities we work with. We can’t afford to not be investing in high-quality and innovative restoration and conservation around the world. And it would only cost a fraction of our annual subsidies to the fossil fuel industry… “The economic case for investing in conservation is strong. More than half of the world’s GDP, almost $44 trillion, is moderately or highly dependent on nature. By some estimates, a global conservation program would cost between $178 billion and $524 billion. While this may seem like a large sum, it pales in comparison with the $7 trillion spent on fossil fuel subsidies in 2022.”

A little more about last week's events in Washington, how Brazil mobilized the climate finance agenda and the challenges moving forward leading G20 and COP30. As Brazil reasserts itself on the global stage, it not only showcases its capacity to lead but also underscores the importance of maintaining the G20's momentum in addressing critical global issues. But, a primary challenge under its current leadership is to effectively communicate and ensure understanding of its non-alignment strategy by Western nations, as well as by China and Russia. The decision to invite President Vladimir Putin of Russia to the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro in November, perceived as a pro-Russian move, further complicates matters.

As one of the Humane Society International representatives at the Climate Conference, my goal is to show the incredible work we are doing in Brazil by supporting the country's largest cities in implementing sustainable food policies based on protein diversification in municipal schools, popular restaurants and social assistance institutions that currently impact considering the work in collaboration with other organizations more than 34 million healthy meals for more than 572 thousand people, in addition to saving the emission of millions of tons of CO2eq. This work supports the achievement of the National Mitigation and Adaptation Plans, as well as it can and should be included in the NDCs. We are here supporting the inclusion of sustainable food systems in the discussions, understanding the importance of this sector and the urgency of this topic that permeates all areas related in the negotiations about social justice, food security, climate change, agroecology, technology and economic development. In Brazil, our work on diversification of proteins with plant-based options has supported a large increase in public purchases from family farming and the diversity of foods offered in public institutions and we hope that they can increasingly expand. #climatechange #food #sustainable

New situation report from the @CrisisReady team on the flooding in #Brazil. (https://lnkd.in/gZqTarTn) ❗Record levels of flooding, driven by heavy rainfall and storms, continues to severely affect the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil. As of May 13th, the death toll from these storms is 143 and over 327,000 people have been displaced from their homes. 👉 Significant population declines and returns have been detected across 54 of 105 districts within and nearby the areas of greatest flooding impact, based on data from Meta. Key mobility trends across the region are detailed in the "Movement" section of this report. Data from the Facebook platform on population is based on a high sample size (-17%) of the total population in Rio Grande do Sul. Baseline district level Facebook population is highly correlated with Brazil's census population, with a R2 value of 0.98. 🛰️ Remote sensing from EU Copernicus shows areas of riverine flooding across Rio Grande do Sul. Image data has been merged into a single time-frame for the purpose of understanding overall flooding impacts across the entire duration of these events. 🌍 ECSP in the News | Last night, ECSP Director Lauren Herzer Risi featured as an expert on a CBS News segment looking at how recent flooding in Brazil is part of a larger trend in climate-induced migration. "When you look back to ten years ago, there were a lot of warning signals, and now those signals are blaring. We need to think about how to change our migration pathways so that people have a viable, safe, and orderly way to escape climate's worst impacts," said Risi.
