Plastics and foams for a sustainable future
About us
On the way to rethink plastics. Without doubt our everyday lives rely on plastics and as consumers we enjoy the lightweight, durability and versatility they bring. There are countless of advantages plastics bring to innovation, but they must also be sustainable. At BASF Performance Materials, we envision a sustainable world with plastics. We explore new ways to make the lifecycle of plastics more sustainable: from how we can produce plastics more resource-efficiently, to how we can use them better, to how we can give them a new life. We call this transformation #ourplasticsjourney. But we cannot do it on our own. That is why we are working with partners along the value chain and create solutions together. Together we can reach our goal of a cleaner tomorrow faster. #ourplasticsjourney has begun, now it is time for you to embark.

Nice to see our President, Martin Jung, taking #ourplasticsjourney back to his roots at TU Eindhoven. He connected with many bright minds who share our drive to finding sustainable solutions to the challenges faced by the plastics industry.
This week #ourplasticsjourney was a trip down memory lane for me as it took me back to my alma mater, Eindhoven University of Technology. Here at my old stomping grounds, Volker Schaedler and I connected with brilliant researchers and enthusiastic PhD students in Prof. Zeljko Tomovic's research group who share our passion for sustainable innovation in the plastics industry. It was great to meet young talents who want to shape the future of chemistry and its contribution to society, and experience the fantastic development of TU/e as part of the Brainport Eindhoven. Thanks for the warm welcome President Robert-Jan Smits, Rector Magnificus Silvia Lenaerts, Dean Kitty Nijmeijer, and our research partner Zeljko Tomovic. #ourplasticsjourney #TUeindhoven #Sustainability #Innovation

“Every day is a new beginning.” At the Zoche Baimatang monastery in Tibetan region, this famous meditation quote resonates with the monks that can now meditate and practice in a more comfortable climate comfort. Located at 4,000 meters above sea level, the building built in 2000 faces an indoor ambient temperature of -20°C during winters. This is where the BASF's ELASTOSPRAY® polyurethane rigid foam has been used in combination with a natural hot spring water as a heat source. Elastospray® ensures that a comfortable room temperature is maintained for meditation purposes, enhancing the overall experience, and creating a conducive environment for relaxation and focus. With the support from BASF's team of experts, every effort was made to preserve the authentic Tibetan style in the construction of this building. Numerous challenges were addressed, including the control of foam density at high altitudes, the rate of foam filling, UV irradiation at high altitudes, isolation of cold bridges in the existing structure, and condensation in the case of significant temperature fluctuations between morning and evening. The expertise of the BASF team played a crucial role in overcoming these obstacles and ensuring that the building met the desired standards while maintaining the integrity of the Tibetan architectural style. The successful completion of this project marks a new beginning for the building and its residents, as they can now enjoy a comfortable living environment that respects their cultural heritage and architectural style.
