This #NAIDOCweek we’re celebrating the students from the Warreen Beek Ranger program, which offers conservation training for First Peoples. Now in its seventh year, the course was created by Elders and community members for First Peoples. This year is the biggest class yet, with 17 students! As 2023 Yorta Yorta and Dja Dja Wurrung graduate Gemma Cadd told us, “It’s good to learn from other cultures and hear stories from them and all the different experiences.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/gRJpaas9 #NAIDOC2024 The Warreen Beek Ranger program is facilitated by Trust for Nature in partnership with Bunurong Land Council Aboriginal Corporation, Wurundjeri Corporation and Holmesglen and supported by the Port Phillip Bay Fund, Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action 📷 : Warreen Beek Rangers class of 2024.

We ask you to lend your voice to amplify the importance of awareness, collective action, and transformation in fostering positive change in the context of shark conservation. Sharks play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of marine ecosystems, and their well-being is intricately linked to our planet’s health. The call for unity in knowledge, policy change and action is powerful, highlighting the need for a collaborative effort to protect and preserve these magnificent and essential creatures. The Rob Stewart Sharkwater Foundation (RSSF) continues Rob's legacy, committed to advocacy and policy change, recognizing the role that individuals and organizations can play in safeguarding our environment. By encouraging a harmonious coexistence with nature, is to promote a broader perspective on our relationship with the planet and all of its inhabitants. Our collective voices and actions will drive transformation to ensure a sustainable future for both humanity and the diverse ecosystems that support life on Mother Earth. #ProtectOurOceans #SharkConservation #PositiveChange #Sharkwater #Revolution #RobStewart #SharkwaterExtinction

🌿🌏 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗪𝗲𝘁𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆: 𝗪𝗲𝘁𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 Today, on World Wetlands Day, we stand at the intersection of nature and human wellbeing. World Wetlands Day 2024 is a call for raising awareness, promoting conservation, and taking steps to restore these crucial habitats. This year's theme, 'Wetlands and Human Wellbeing,' highlights the profound connection between our lives and these vibrant ecosystems. Wetlands are not just a haven for biodiversity; they are essential for climate mitigation, freshwater availability, and our economies. Yet, alarmingly, we've lost nearly 90% of the world's wetlands since the 1700s, with degradation occurring three times faster than forests. Let's use this day to deepen our understanding and commitment to these ecosystems that sustain, inspire, and protect us! NWP member Wetlands International is a science-based partner working with civil society, government and the private sector to enable wetland conservation and restoration. Did You Know? There is a dedicated day for seagrass. In 2022, the UN General Assembly proclaimed March 1st as #WorldSeagrassDay The General Assembly acknowledged the additional contribution and importance of #carbonsequestration resulting from the restoration of ecosystems to the achievement of the long-term temperature goal of the #ParisAgreement. The resolution highlighted the urgent need to raise awareness at all levels and to promote and facilitate actions for the conservation of seagrasses in order to contribute to their health and development, bearing in mind that enhancing ecosystem services and functions is important for the achievement of the #SustainableDevelopmentGoals. ↪️ Join us as we bring to you #Pacific experts working on the conservation of seagrass for a virtual #talanoa session on March 1st from 1430 to 1630 (FJT). 🔗Register now on https://bitly.ws/3djbh Pacific Community-SPC Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) #WorldSeagrassDay #MACBLUE #BlueCarbon

"We #Indigenous land guardians bring millennia of forest expertise and, frankly, values that are far more in tune with what the #planet needs in this season of crisis. #Funders bring material #wealth that can deploy to strengthen our organizations, advocate for national policies that value Indigenous #guardianship, and keep our communities safe. With true #partnerships rooted in #reciprocity, I believe we can go fast and far at the same time." Hindou Oumarou Ibrahim https://lnkd.in/gwPj_F2e

Conservation Program Manager at National Caucus of Environmental Legislators & Co-Chair of the America the Beautiful for All Coalition's Priorities, Projects & Campaigns Work Group
I learned a ton from moderating this panel! Namely: -Conserving public land doesn't inherently guarantee access, and Maryland has already begun making the latter a priority through the Maryland Greenspace Equity Program. -California's Pathways to 30x30 Plan is a gold star model of community engagement (17 listening sessions over 12 months!) -Colorado's Outdoor Strategy and the Keep Colorado Wild Pass are two examples of creative funding/programming models for other states to consider. -New Mexico's Land of Enchantment Fund is the state's first ever dedicated fund for conservation, and was passed by a part-time legislature, making the investment even more impressive. In summary: if I were to place bets on where to make deep capacity, time and strategy investments to advance conservation and environmental justice goals in the wake of a very uncertain November, I'd go big on states. Kudos: Center for American Progress, Rep. Kristina Ortez, Sen. Sarah Elfreth, Jennifer Norris, Jonathan Asher, Taylor Anderson, Mariel Lutz, Drew McConville, and of course, to our keynote speaker and personal hero of mine: Chair Brenda Mallory
Last week, NCEL's Kate Burgess moderated a #conservation event with Center for American Progress to discuss how states across the nation are collaborating to address the #BiodiversityCrisis. From innovative conservation and outdoor equity funds to Tribal land return, states are leading in conservation efforts. Eyes on the prize...WWF&C's vision for New England is to lead in addressing the global crises of climate, biodiversity, and inequity by sustaining the natural infrastructure that supports all life on earth. To succeed, we must work across New England: from cities to countryside, and from forests and farms to every community, to permanently protect undeveloped land. Each of the six states in our region has ambitious goals to increase the pace and scope of land preservation, and with collaborative efforts, a clear path forward and traditional New England gumption, we can achieve them. Our dashboard shows where we are now and where we need to be as states and a region.

🌊 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝟯𝟬𝘅𝟯𝟬 𝗼𝗰𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗴𝗻? 👉 30x30 is a campaign to protect 30% of the world’s oceans by 2030. 💙 Marine scientists and conservation charities argue that by creating a global network of marine protected areas, we can safeguard the health of the world’s oceans and help to combat the effects of climate change. 🌎 The ocean covers 70% of the world’s surface. 🤷♀️ However, less than 3% of it lies within a highly protected zone. 💁♂️ The new UN High Seas Treaty provides a legal framework for establishing Marine Protected Areas in international waters. It has been called a ‘breakthrough’ for international conservation efforts, but campaigners warn that there is still more to be done in order to reach the 30x30 target. 🐟 Become a Go Ocean member and help restore the ocean and its highly important ecosystems. #GoOcean #30x30 (Source: Marine conservation institute)
