In 1540 the marriage of King Henry VIII and Anne of Cleves was annulled after six months; in 1877 the first lawn tennis championship was held at Wimbledon, then in Surrey, with 21 amateur players competing. The tournament was won by Wimbledon-born Spencer Gore, who was also a first-class cricketer; in 1910 Edith Cook — Britain’s first female pilot — made a jump from a balloon at Coventry but a gust of wind led to her parachute collapsing and she died on July 14 from injuries sustained, aged 31. Her first flight was in a Bleriot XI in France in January 1910 and she made more than 300 parachute jumps; in 1983 Wham!’s debut album, Fantastic, was released, and spent two weeks at No 1 in the UK album charts. Andrew Ridgeley and George Michael’s first chart hit was Young Guns (Go For It), released on October 16, 1982, peaking at No 3 in the UK singles charts; in 1993 the remains of the last tsar of Russia, Nicholas II, and his family were identified using DNA testing on nine bone fragments.
Nature notes
Horsetail, as many gardeners know to their cost, is an extraordinary plant — tough, rhizomatous and all but impossible to eradicate. Producing spores rather than seeds, it is a living fossil and one of the oldest vascular plants on Earth. Pale, fertile but non-photosynthetic spikes appear in spring; these wilt and are followed by the characteristic green spiky brushes, high in silica, in summer. Also known as bottle-brush, horsetail was once used to scour pots, like a primitive Brillo pad. Silica in plants reduces water loss, protects them from grazing due to its abrasive texture, strengthens stems and helps to resist infection. Other species containing silica, albeit in lower concentrations, include crops such as rice, wheat, sunflowers, tobacco and sugar cane. Melissa Harrison
