SRAR for First-Year Applicants

First, some background! The Self Reported Academic Record (SRAR) is designed to allow you, the applicant, to submit your academic record without needing to rely on a high school counselor or other administrator. That puts you in the driver’s seat for more components of your application, and for students who don’t have easy access to college counseling, that can be the difference between being able to apply to college, and being edged out of the process.

Who is required to submit the SRAR?

All students applying for first-year admission from a high school anywhere in the world, or those who were home-schooled and followed a traditional U.S. educational curriculum, will be required to provide the Self-Reported Academic Record (SRAR). The SRAR is free and should take roughly an hour to complete if you have a copy of your high school transcript available.

When do I need to submit the SRAR?

You will be able to access the SRAR through your NYU Applicant Portal which is available to you after submitting your application. Once submitted, it will take up to 48 hours for it to show as received in your Applicant Portal. You will have a few days after your application deadline to submit your SRAR to NYU but please be advised that around our application deadlines, it can take longer than 48 hours for your SRAR to show as received.

How do I enter my grades into the SRAR?

To begin, you’ll need to have your high school transcript with you because each course you’ve taken throughout high school will need to be captured exactly as it appears on your transcript. Here are a few additional points you’ll need to keep in mind:

Enter your grades exactly as they appear on your high school transcript or your score report. We can’t say this enough.
Enter your final grades for each course on grades 9-11 and all current and scheduled senior year courses from your transcript on your academic record. Middle school courses should not be included. Any dual enrollment courses should be listed as “Dual Enrollment” under the course level.
For Grade 12, under the drop-down titled Grade, please select “IP - In Progress” for any courses for which you do not yet have final grades.
- If you have received a term (e.g. semester, trimester) grade or final grade for a course, you may record the grade. Please record “IP -In Progress” for the remaining term(s) for the course.
Do not make any changes to the grades as they appear on your transcript: no need to weight them, or convert to another scale, or average any grades.
If your school gives final official grades by term or semester and no final averaged grade, then list each course with its grade by term or semester. If you receive a single final grade for each course, you only need to provide the final grade.
If you have a course whose exact name is not listed in SRAR, just type it in as it appears on your transcript.

I completed the SRAR for another institution. Can I send that SRAR to NYU?

Yes. If you already have a SRAR completed for another institution your information will carry over when you log in to complete and submit your SRAR to NYU.

My school changed its grading scale. How do I indicate this in my SRAR?

Use “other” as the grading scale when you add your school information. Do not try to convert your grades.

I’m from a school system where I do not have grades or exam scores for all four years of high school. What should I do?

You can leave the years blank if you do not have internal grades are exam results. For example, students from the UK system need only include grades in SRAR for 10th grade (GCSE/IGCSE/O-Levels) and A-Level predictions in 12th grade.
