Race day is finally upon us at the British Grand Prix following a brilliant day yesterday for the English as George Russell and Lewis Hamilton secured a Mercedes one-two during qualifying at Silverstone.

The Mercedes duo will be desperate to convert their strong qualifying performance into a race win in front of their home crowd today, but both know that Max Verstappen and Lando Norris are waiting in the wings behind them.

However, for reigning champion Verstappen, a big change has been made heading into the race after a damaging qualifying session at Silverstone.

Meanwhile, Saturday proved another absolute disaster for Verstappen's Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez, who came home in 19th place after beaching his RB20 into the gravel during Q1.

It has placed his Red Bull future into more uncertainty following reports heading into the British Grand Prix that his seat was under huge threat despite sealing a new contract at the beginning of last month.

Below, Express Sport will be on hand ot provide you with all the latest news and updates before, during and after the Silverstone race today...

Verstappen happy with second

Max Verstappen was content with his second-place finish at Silverstone.

He said: "We just didn't have the pace today. I was slowly dropping back when it mattered in the beginning.

"It didn't look great. At some point, I was thinking 'Are we going to finish fifth, sixth?'

"But we made the right calls. Going from the slicks to the inters, then from the inters back to the slicks, was every time (done on) the right lap.

"At the end the call from the team to be on the hard tyre, instead of the soft, definitely helped me out. That's why I think we finished second today. It could have been a lot worse, but we're making the right calls, we still got onto the podium. Ofcourse I'm very happy with that."

Toto Wolf delighted

Toto Wolff hailed Lewis Hamilton after he won the British GP.

He said: "Fantastic. You couldn't have written it better for our farewell at the British Grand Prix. That was great.

"He had some difficult times recently. Then, some faultless driving in various conditions.

"I really enjoy us bouncing back. We were one and two for a long time in the dry. Performance-wise, it looks like we are coming back."

Hamilton speaks

Lewis Hamilton has explained why he was so emotional after winning his home Grand Prix.

He said: "It’s so tough, I think for anyone, but the important thing is just how you continue to get up and you’ve got to continue to dig deep even when you feel like you’re at the bottom of the barrel.

"There have definitely been days between 2021 and here where I didn’t feel like I was good enough or I was going to get back to where I am today. But the important thing is I had great people around me, continuing to support me. My team, every time I turned up and saw them putting in the effort that really encouraged me to do the same thing.

"Otherwise, my fans, when I see them around the world, they have been so supportive. So a big, big thank you to everybody.”

Russell speaks out

George Russell said: "Probably about 10 laps before I had to retire. I saw temperature alarms coming up my steering wheel and some sort of water cooling failure.

"I don't really know what to say. The car was feeling so good.

"I knew it was going to be a long race. I struggled a bit around the damp patches but very gutting."
