The British Grand Prix could end up as a farewell tour for one of the drivers on the grid.

Logan Sargeant may well be running his final F1 race at the British Grand Prix this weekend after Williams team principal James Vowles suggested that he is weighing up replacing the American racer mid-season amid continued on-track struggles.

The American was afforded a second season after much deliberation at the end of the 2023 campaign with Vowles backing his man to improve his form and kick relative to team-mate Alex Albon. However, this has not transpired and heading into the race at Silverstone, Sargeant sits 21st in the Drivers’ Championship standings with a best finish of 15th.

His fate appears to be sealed with moves for Carlos Sainz and Valtteri Bottas in the pipeline with the line of questioning now pivoting from if he’ll be replaced to when Williams will pull the trigger and make the change. According to Vowles, the end may be nigh.

“We’re continually evaluating, what we said to Logan is it’s a meritocracy,” Vowles explained at Silverstone. “You have to make sure you earn your place in the sport continuously, that’s been the same message that has been for 18 months really for him and we are open-minded to things.

“What I’ve said before and I’ve maintained today is that our car – and this is a responsibility on my shoulders and the team – currently isn’t quick enough. It’s not a driver issue we suffer from today, we’ve simply been out-developed and we have to make sure we accelerate that process.”

Vowles then followed up these comments ahead of FP3 on Saturday, telling Sky Sports F1: "There will be a line in the sand where we have to make a decision... both for '25 and maybe for something this year"

For Sargeant, any hopes of remaining in F1 look slim, unless the 23-year-old is willing to venture into the test and reserve driver market. However, Mick Schumacher’s struggles to secure an F1 return and the plight of the patient Felipe Drugovich will serve as a warning to the Floridian should he choose that path.

However, he may have a bright future in IndyCar. Prema Racing boss Rene Rosin confirmed ahead of the British GP weekend that talks are progressing with Sargeant over a seat in their brand-new two-car programme for the 2025 campaign.

Sargeant would join fellow ex-F1 drivers Romain Grosjean, Marcus Ericsson and Pietro Fittipaldi on the IndyCar grid, which has recently witnessed an influx of Formula Two graduates making the leap across the pond.
