Christian Horner was captured shaking his head on the pit wall after Sergio Perez beached his RB20 in the gravel during the early stages of Q1. The Red Bull racer will start the British Grand Prix from 19th on the grid with only Alpine’s Pierre Gasly lining up behind him.

Heading into qualifying, Perez was the talk of the paddock after reports emerged suggesting that the 34-year-old is in danger of losing his seat mid-season. Daniel Ricciardo is understood to be the man waiting in the wings to replace him, despite the experienced Aussie managing his own struggles in 2024.

Perez, therefore, needed a strong result to calm the speculation. Instead, he brought his afternoon to an early conclusion, understeering off the track before spinning into the gravel. The reaction of his team principal said it all as Horner greeted the news with a disapproving shake of the head.

That disappointment was shared by Perez himself. Discussing his nightmare start to the weekend, Perez told Sky Sports F1: "I got caught out with the conditions. I was trying to warm up the tyres into Turn Nine but as I downshifted, I locked up the rear tyre and it went off the track.

"I ended up losing the car, going into the gravel and that was it. It hurts because to let your team down that way, it hurts a lot because I think the weekend was strong up to now. We were just not able to show the pace."

Perez was also asked whether he has received any dialogue from Horner or Helmut Marko regarding his future. The six-time Grand Prix winner denied the report over his future and insisted that he is fully concentrated on turning his fortunes around.

“No, nothing,” he explained. “But I have a contract and I’m fully focused on my job, which is to deliver tomorrow, so I don’t have to think [about] anything else. The most concerned about it is myself, so I want to get back to my form as early as possible, and I’m just fully focused on my form.

“Of course, I’m fully committed to the team, I’m fully committed to my career. I have a contract with the team and I will turn things around. It’s not something that distracts me or anything like that. It’s something that is done and dusted and I just want to get back to my form and focus on the important things.”
